It's that spooky time of the year, time for some History of the Northside, and specifically about the BLACK ANGEL! There are many accounts, rumors and superstitions about this most famous monument in Oakland Cemetery, but here is the real story: Teresa Karasek Dolezal Feldevert was a trained Doctor in Bohemia. She married Dr. Frantizek Dolezal in 1873 and immigrated to Iowa in 1877, finally arriving in Iowa City 1880. Unfortunately her training was not recognized here and she was forced to be a midwife for the rest of her life. Teresa's beloved 17 year old son Eddie passed away in 1891 and she moved out west after burying her son with a tree stump grave marker. After losing two of her husbands in Oregon, she decided to move back to Iowa City and hire a Czech-born sculptor from Chicago (for the huge sum of $5,000.00) to erect a angel for her dear son and last husband at one of the highest spots in Iowa City: Oakland Cemetery. There is much debate on whether the angel arrived in Iowa City Bronze and faded to black or arrived from Chicago via rail already black, but needless to say that Theresa was not pleased. She sued the artist (or con-man, depending on what account you believe), but was made to pay the full sum after losing her court battle. Teresa died in 1924 at the age of 88 and was laid to rest by her son and last husband. She was a successful Doctor, amazing midwife, and broke many barriers for women in Iowa City.. She was truly amazing! However, there are many different accounts of this tale told over the years, many different stories told around the campfire about eerie presences in the cemetery, what are your fondest stories of Iowa City's darkest monument?
