Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, an opportunity to celebrate and recognize our Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and Abenkai friends, family, and neighbors. For all they have given to our communities, we say nia:wen ("thank you" in the Kanien'kéha language).

One Square Mile of Hope returns to Inlet on Saturday, September 14, celebrating a decade since setting the Guinness World Record for the largest canoe and kayak raft.

Organizers aim to surpass the previous achievement of 3,150 vessels, setting the 2014 record. The record attempt will be followed by a celebration at Arrowhead Park featuring live music, vendors, raffles, a silent auction, and health and wellness information, along with representatives from local businesses and outfitters.

Paddling enthusiasts are encouraged to register for the event and be part of history at https://www.onesquaremileofhope.org/.

This year, One Square Mile of Hope will benefit Golisano Children’s Hospitals of Syracuse and Rochester. A portion of the funds raised will also support local first responder organizations and Kiwanis International.

One Square Mile of Hope was born from a desire to honor those fighting cancer by contributing to research and care. Founder Connie Perry, owner of Frisky Otter Tours, established the event in memory of a close friend lost to breast cancer. Seeking a meaningful way to honor her while raising funds to combat the disease, Perry combined her love for the water with a bold mission – to attempt a Guinness World Record. This unique concept resonated with the local business community, leading to the creation of One Square Mile of Hope.

“The sight of thousands – 1,104, 1,902, and then a record-breaking 3,150 – of canoes, kayaks, and guide boats coming together, united by human hands for a cause, is truly awe-inspiring,” said Inlet Tourism Director Adele Burnett.

“The impact of the funds raised through the events over the years is equally profound,” Burnett said.

Golisano Children’s Hospitals have been ranked among the best in the nation by renowned U.S. News & World Report in three specialties: Neonatology, the care of newborns; Pediatric Nephrology, the treatment of kidney issues; Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, children’s cancer.

During One Square Mile of Hope in 2014, the primary recipient of money raised was Breast Cancer Research; however, the OSM team allotted a small portion of the proceeds to Upstate Golisano in Syracuse.

At that time, members of the OSM Committee were given a tour of the facilities and introduced to some of the patients. To say they were impressed would be an understatement. So when the 2024 event was organized, Golisano Children’s Hospital rose to the forefront as major recipient.

Additional information about the event can be found online at https://www.onesquaremileofhope.org/.

Look who we got to see! Mary Anne Ryan, the former proprietor of the shop. Mary Anne comes to town every summer to visit her old stomping grounds. Today, Carrie and Mary Anne visited the Inlet Historical Museum, got an ice cream at Northern Lights and sat on a bench in Arrowhead Park and chatted for a couple hours. She calls us her second set of kids. We approve! Can’t wait to see you next summer!
