The people of rural coastal Virginia are resilient, strong, full of grace.
When the COVID-19 pandemic shut downs started coming down, the community of Guinea in southern Gloucester faced it head on, just like they are used to. They are used to, after all, weathering storms of the hurricane kind.
Pictured here is Ms. Lou, the unofficial mayor of Guinea. The leader of the Achilles Shopping Center (aka Marvin's). The heartbeat of a community.
As we spend this week looking back on the anniversary of COVID-19, we salute Ms. Lou for helping show strength in the face of this crisis, in those early days and still today. She kept up the smiles (this photo was taken in 2020 before mandatory mask requirements) and made sure every customer could get what they needed (even selling individual rolls of toilet paper).
The people of rural coastal Virginia are resilient, strong, full of grace. The community of Guinea in southern Gloucester is used to weathering storms of the hurricane kind. Today they are coming together to weather the COVID-19 storm…and they are doing it in true Guinea style. Together. As a community. Looking out for each other.
Here’s a look at how the hub of the Guinea watermen community – the Achilles Shopping Center aka Marvin’s – is leading the way to showcase how small businesses are working to be a neighbor helping neighbors.
It’s what we all need right now.
This is the first in our series of showing Stories of Strength…Inspired by YOU!
Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped by this morning... Even they know where to find the best food and people!!!
Stop by and pick up lunch, say Hi to Lou and Joe, and have a smile and a laugh.
I WILL MISS YOU ALL! I will no longer be at the store after 3 years of being part of your everyday life and yall, mine. A sincere thanks from this "come here" to all the locals! Thank you for welcoming me into your family, love you guys and I will see you around the neighborhood! I HOPE! LOL
It's funny how circular life can be sometimes. While working on writing this piece, Steph was doing some research about the history of Achilles Shopping Center and came across an article she wrote 13 years ago for the Daily Press. Clearly we love this place...then and now! Enjoy a little fun piece we were delighted to write for the Virginia Water Trails - Middle Peninsula!

Come out and see us tonight... If you dare...
Happy Halloween
