BREAKING NEWS - Regarding the Hastings Creamery & Hastings Dairy Store :
We had a very productive meeting today with ownership, Mayor Fasbender, Commissioner Zelle (Met Council), Commissioner Petersen (Dept of Ag), and representatives of the 45 dairy farmers who bring their milk to Hastings for processing.
** We have a path for the Creamery to become compliant and if all goes well, to stay in business! **
More will develop in the coming days but I would like to thank the Mayor and Commissioners for meeting today and the willingness to try and find a solution. Special thanks to Representative Tom Murphy as well who is really working to protect our Dairy farmers. We’ll find a way Hastings!

While we had hoped to have had a more upbeat post for June dairy month the situation at hand is critical.

We have been informed that the Metropolitan Council plans to close the Hastings Creamery at 12:00 AM on Monday, June 5th due to FOG’s (fats, oils, and grease) violations against our water permit. We were informed that the Hastings Creamery has been in violation since 2013 when the statute was first put into place. Our current owners were not informed of these violations at the time of purchase in 2021 but have since been working with a consultant to achieve a system that will eliminate the F.O.G’s from entering the city sewer. This plan will take time to implement, however. While we do not deny that this violation has occurred, we have been working diligently to correct equipment issues and train staff. We do need the plant to remain in operation so that plant employees can keep their jobs and our 40+ farm families can keep their dairies going as there is nowhere else for their milk to go. This could lead to economic hardship for entire communities.

We need your support! Please call and express your concerns to your legislators, representatives, the city of Hastings and the Metropolitan Council so that we can keep the doors to our Creamery open. There are many depending on it.

128 YEARS AGO TODAY. The Hastings spiral bridge opened with much fanfare and thousands in attendance.

At Hastings Creamery, our farmers recognize the importance of Earth Day each day through sustainable farming methods: from grazing cattle on rotations of pastures, using low or no tillage in fields, and using cover crops to prevent soil erosion, to monitoring soil health and water usage, and protecting or maintaining areas for wildlife to thrive.

So while one day may be set aside each year to highlight ways to care for the earth, we will continue this celebration all year long!
