Looking for something different for Valentine's Day? Try the Bugey-Cerdon "La Cueille" sparkling wine from a region in France called Bugey. Bugey is situated between Savoie, Jura, and the city of Lyon. This is a sparkling rose that has an AMAZING nose of strawberries and is a 90% Gamay/10% Poulsard blend of grapes. Slightly sweet and oh so good!!

The aging process of Tawny Port is what makes this style of wine amazing... boasting flavors of almonds, figs, dried apricots & orange peel. The "10 Year" designation indicates that it is a blend of wines that makes an average of 10 years... ie, there might be wine from the last vintage blended with wines from 50 years ago. The goal is to make a consistent wine that is both bright with acidity and shows the beauty of aging with dried fruits and nutty flavors. This particular bottling is light on the palate and not too sweet... a far cry from the cloying sweetness that you might associate with port wine.

Thanksgiving Wines, continued! This is one of our favorites! It hails from the Beaujolais region of France and is a shoe-in for pairing with ALL your Thanksgiving favorites! Even the hard-to-pair cranberry sauce from the can! The Dupeuble drinks like a Cru Beaujolais (aka a fancy, well made Beaujolais with personality) but without the Cru price tag… under $21 at AlchemyWineCo.com

Luscious fruit, dry but not too dry, and after decanting it had a stunning earthiness that really sealed the deal!

You: “But Kaz, I don’t have a decanter!”
Me: “That’s easy. 2 methods to try: 1) pour the wine into a stainless steel sauce pan, then pour it back into the bottle using a kitchen funnel. Wait about an hour and taste how it changes. 2) open the bottle and pour yourself a half glass. Put the cork back in and shake the bottle…not joking! Then take out the cork to “burp” the bottle; replace cork; shake again; “burp” again. Wait an hour. Enjoy!!”

Truth be told, I did the second option!

So, Jeff and I were making a list the other day of all the wines we carry which will pair with "Thanksgiving". This wine was #1. It's the Sauvia Soave from Italy and it's brilliant! Does it pair with Turkey? Yes. Stuffing? Yes. Salad? Yes. Charcuterie? Yes. Ham? Yes. Green bean casserole? Yes. Cranberry sauce from the can?... maybe not. (but we have other wines available that will pair with that!).

My husband described the wine like this: "It's like biting into a jelly bean where the outside layer is watery, and the inside is exploding with fruit flavor".... umm... I'm not exactly what that means, except that y'all will need to try the wine and see if you agree with my husband! 😆

Also, as we were making our list, we discovered that 99% of our wines will pair with Thanksgiving!! That should make it easy for you to decide what to buy from us to complement your meal!

Lastly, I wanted to take this photo in the backyard with all the fall colors 🍁, but when I got home from work, it was dark already... ugh, shorter days! When will it be Spring again?? 🌞

In America, the word “Beaujolais” often conjures up thoughts of a $6 wine that arrives once a year, that someone brought to your Thanksgiving dinner. The label on the bottle was attractive and colorful, but the wine inside was, to be polite, not what you were expecting. Not surprisingly, while the marketing of Beaujolais Nouveau may be called “genius” by some capitalists, it served to completely decimate the reputation of the entire Beaujolais region of France (similar to what the movie "Sideways" did to Merlot).

But luckily for you, in the shadow of the Nouveau, the talented winemakers in Beaujolais have continued their traditions of making distinctive, compelling, and spectacular wines! They are food—friendly, lower in alcohol, and they ACTUALLY pair perfectly with Thanksgiving dinner (unlike their $6 counterpart).

What am I drinking tonight? It's the Sauvage from Gruet Winery! This is one of our favorites at Alchemy Wine Company 🥂 It's a bone-dry sparkling wine from New Mexico (that's right, I said New Mexico) that is one of the best sparkling wines in America... and with deep roots from the Champagne region of France, the Gruet family produces sparklers from America that (dare I say it) rival some of the best Champagnes available (but without the Champagne price tag). If you live in Virginia, you can purchase this wine on our website and have it shipped to your house (if you're over 21yo, that is!).
And I know what you're saying... "Hey Karen, aren't you supposed to drink sparkling wine from a special Champagne-style glass?". The short answer is yes... there is a special glass for sparkling wine, but when you can't find yours then any glass will do!! Don't let the decision to enjoy sparkling wine when the occasion calls for it be spoiled by the "wrong" glassware... for goodness sake, just use what you have!
