Pisa, the city that is home to one of the most recognizable symbols of Italy, is also the site of one of the most important works of modern art in Italy—Keith Haring’s Tuttomondo.
Haring painted the nearly 600 foot tall “All the World” mural on the rear exterior of the church of Sant’Antonio Abate in 1989. It was to be one of Haring’s last major works of art before he died of AIDS-related complications in 1990. And just how did this world-renowned artist find himself in Italy? The story goes than in 1987 in NYC he met a young student and artist by the name of Piergiorgio Castellani. Piergiorgio suggested he create a mural in Pisa which was inaugurated on June 20th, 1989.
Piergiorgio, now a winemaker in Tuscany, was gifted the label by Keith for one of his 'important' wines. Piergiorgio never used out of respect for their friendship but recent controversy about Haring's art in Pisa put the idea back in his mind. So with the permission of the director of the Haring Foundation, Julia Gruen and an agreement that a portion of the proceeds would go to the Haring Foundation, and part to an art residency project, named Materia Prima, in the hills of Pisa, the Tenuta di Ceppaiano Keith Haring Rosso was born.

Since establishing themselves as a small estate to watch back in the 1970’s, Le Vieux Donjon has continued to produce classically-made expressions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Michel family, Claire Fabre and her brother, François Michel learned from their father Lucien Michel and still only produce two wines, a white and today’s featured red wine, their outstanding Châteauneuf-du-Pape. We highly recommend pairing this sumptuous red wine with a roaring fire and a nice steak dinner.

Having begun winemaking at the age of 23, Marjorie Gallet has since made a name for herself in the Roussillon region, earning a reputation for her rigorous and terroir-driven wines. Gallet moved west from her native Rhone in 2001, setting up shop first in Tautavel and then, as husband Stepháne jumped in to help manage the estate in 2008, in Montner, a hamlet in Catalonia (and the heart of Roussillon). The certified organic and biodynamic vineyards of Roc des Anges stand nestled into the north face of the Força Réal mountain, their soils filled with quartz and black schist, a coarse and grainy metamorphic rock. This single-vineyard ‘Australe’ is 100% Serine, an ancient clone of Syrah, and fills the mouth with ripe dark fruits and herbs, finishing with rounded, graceful tannins. Pair with bold-flavored meats like game, duck, or lamb.

Purchased and restored by the husband-and-wife team of Xavier and Nicole Rolet beginning in 1993, the land underneath Southern Rhône’s Chêne Bleu winery holds some eleven centuries of history. Located at the sunny edges of the Mont Ventoux biosphere reserve, in the Vaucluse region of Provence (about an hour northeast of Avignon by car), Chêne Bleu’s remote, high-altitude, and geologically diverse terroir make for wonderfully complex wines, all of them produced using sustainable, organic, and biodynamic practices.

These two, Abélard and Héloïse — named after France’s own real-life and even more tragic version of Romeo and Juliet — are Chêne Bleu’s flagship red wines: the Abélard a forceful and intense Grenache blend, the Héloïse an elegant and balanced Syrah blend. At Putnam and Vine, we’re divided 50/50 on which of these gorgeous reds we prefer. Rather than picking one, it might be best to keep the romantic couple intact and pair them with a course of roast beef and vegetables.

Join Putnam and Vine this Saturday (12/11) from 2-5PM, when we’ll be tasting an awesome selection of organic and biodynamic champagnes with Transatlantic Bubbles. More on these beauties below!

Robert Barbichon Blanc de Noirs Champagne: This non-vintage blanc de noirs (literally, white of blacks, a Champagne made from all red grapes) is 93% Pinot Noir and 7% Pinot Meunier. Certified biodynamic and organic, it’s fresh on the nose with bready notes of white fruit and citrus. The palate is bright with a minerally and mouthwatering finish. 12% ABV

Marguet “Shaman 18” Extra Brut Rosé: Certified biodynamic, this excellent Rosé Champagne from the great Benoît Marguet is non-dosé (no sugar added after the yeast is disgorged). The nose offers notes of red fruit, blood orange, and a touch of cinnamon. The palate is bright but balanced, with terrific acidity and a sophisticated finish. 93 points, John Gilman. 12.5% ABV

Bruno Dangin Cuvée Blanche Brut Crémant de Bourgogne: With vineyards just outside the Champagne appellation, this is a Crémant in name only. 100% Chardonnay, certified organic. Apple and lemon on the nose; bright, full-bodied, and complex on the palate with a long finish. 90 points, John Gilman. 12.5% ABV.

On the northwestern edge of Barolo DOCG lies an area known as Verduno. Setting high with panoramic views of Barolo, Verduno has become famous for producing Barolo from the famed 'Monvigliero' vineyard. But there is another wine that has our attention today. The Fratelli Alessandria Verduno Pelaverga 'Speziale' is only found in this part of Piemonte and is a popular varietal among Italian wine lovers. Aromas of wild strawberries, white pepper, raspberry and lavender makes it a perfect pairing for your Thanksgiving feast.
Come in for a tasting today!

Winemaker Xavier Gerard shocked the Northern Rhone region in 2015, when his Côte-Rôtie took second in a blind tasting panel. The young vigneron managed the feat mere years after he took control of the entirety of his family’s estate in the areas of Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu (a half-hour drive south from Lyon). Xavier has since stayed humble, pursuing a personalized style of winemaking that emphasizes grape purity and local terroir, working his steep vineyards manually and using classic Northern Rhone practices in his cellars.

We are thrilled to have been able to get our hands on these three gems from Domaine Gerard: Xavier’s 2017 Condrieu “l’Arbuel,” his 2018 Côte-Rôtie, and his 2018 Côte Châtillon sweet wine. Come in pick one up for yourself before the Thanksgiving rush sweeps them away. .
