Our Family Business

Chapman’s General Store. Where does the story begin? It’s really a library of stories, with several books and novellas in the mix. Originally established by the Chapman Family, Chapman’s General Store has thrived as a place where connection happens since 1890.

In 1989, Gary and Martha “Marti” Jurnak purchased the business and made it their own. It was a place for their children, and their children’s many neighborhood friends to grow up, and show up, sometimes, unexpectedly. There were other novellas along the way - like when they had a “car hop” with ice cream and other “fast foods” and when Martha had a consignment store in the space closest to the river.

If you spend an afternoon at the General Store, you’ll see a lot of activity - people buying night crawlers to fish in the Mettawee River adjacent to the store, trucks stopping to fuel up on their long journeys, kids getting creemees with their parents, local farmers and quarry workers stopping in during an afternoon break.

And if you’re lived in this area for long, you’ll know that it’s a place where many teenagers held a first job, and some have stayed for years. Ask Becca about that - she’s our baker, and has the longest tenure with Chapman’s General Store. So that’s what Chapman’s General Store is - it’s a place where a lifetime of stories began. And, this particular story has been in the making for over 30 beautiful years.
