Welcoming a fresh vintage from champions of distinctive, site-driven wines in the North Coast: Arnot-Roberts.

For the uninitiated Arnot-Roberts is brainchild of Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts. The focus of this project is to produce wines that highlight the nature of the unique terroirs in which the grapes are grown. Sites are located in Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Rita Hills, Clearlake and Sierra Foothills.

Some of the vineyards are old and dry-farmed, some are newer plantings but all are farmed and cared for by passionate and conscientious growers, which is paramount to the fundamental goal of Arnot-Roberts: producing the most honest and expressive wines possible.

 A tiny drop of ‘22s:

▪️BENGIER (VARE) VINEYARD RIBOLLA GIALLA: 19 year old vines planted with cuttings from Fruili legened, Josko Gravner. Grown in gravelly loam at the base of Mount Veeder in the Napa Valley. Fermented with native yeast in stainless steel after six hours of pre-press skin contact and aged in neutral French oak for 10 months. 5 barrels produced.

▪️CLARY RANCH SYRAH: 18 year old vines planted in sandy clay-loam six miles from the Pacific in the heart of the Petaluma wind gap. Fermented 100% whole cluster with native yeast and basket pressed to neutral French oak barrels for ten months. 10 barrels produced.

Welcoming a new vintage of crushable sippers from our friends at Shed Wine!

On the shelf:

2023 Leave the Door Open: a chillable red made from Cabernet Franc and hybrid grape La Crescent. Fermented separately with native yeasts before blending. Earthy red fruits and spices mixed with tropical brightness. Easy to drink, hard to put down.

2023 My Friend Pan: lightly spritzed rosé made from whole cluster direct press Pinot Noir. Bottled with the tiniest amount of residual sugar still left to ferment, which created this dry beauty with delicate effervescence. Light, dry and a little tangy loaded with wild strawberries and a vegetal bite. A perfect way to start and end your meal.

Highlighting Domaine des Carlines…

Husband and wife duo - Patrick & Sophie Ligeron took over a vineyard in 2015 to fulfill Patrick’s dream of making wine in his homeland, Jura. They have 11 hectares (27ish acres), 3 of which are located in Château-Châlon — home of the famous vin jaune wine and comté cheese…in other words, great things come out of this area of the world! 😍🤤

In the vineyard they work sustainably and organically (working towards certifying) and make wines that reflect the exceptional Jura terroir.
We are happy to have 2 of their bottlings here at the shop!
🟡 La Vouivre
- 70% Chardonnay, 30% Savagnin…ripe white fruits, a touch of spice, and a balancing minerality
🔴 Poulsard
- 100% Poulsard…an expressive raspberry glou glou

These spark joy 💥

Welcoming new vintages of some of our favorite rosé by way of Deutschland.

New school: A lip-smacking blend of Trollinger, Portugeiser, Spätburgunder and Zweigelt made by saignée from Weingut Beurer. Salty watermelon candy with an herbal bite. Both in 750s and 1.5L if you’re bringing the party.

Old school: Uli Stein’s light & angular Pinot Noir with a pinch of Cab & Merlot made with saignée and direct press juice. Mineral and juicy with a tart acid backbone.

Bottle Spotlight 🔦 2021 Big Bunch Theory “Fresh Impressions Blanc” from Patrice Beguet! 🐻

In the lush commune of Mesnay in Jura, France - Patrice Beguet is making experimental wines that are expressive, complex, and textural.

🍇 This wine is apart of his series where he purchases grapes from collaborating growers. The grapes (here it’s Gewürztraminer, Grenache Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne, Chardonnay + Savagnin) come from organic/biodynamic vineyards in Alsace, Loire, and Jura.

A zero/zero bottle that is packed with flavor and a long finish. Yellow fruit, zesty lime, ivy, orange blossom & hay — this wine is juicy while still providing thirst-quenching acidity. Perfect for summertime sipping! ☀️

Tomorrow we’ll be hosting Randall Bush, founder of !

Loci is small import project primarily focused on Italy (and a bit of France), Loci isn’t just about the wine. It’s about the people, places and philosophies that paint a more complete picture of terroir.

According to Randall:

“We import neoclassical wine, and are happy to talk about the term. Vineyards are of the utmost importance, yes, but so are tables—or really, wherever wine is meaningfully shared. No glitz, no glam, just the people and contexts that make real wine worth your time.”

We’ll be tasting some of these special wines and hearing the stories behind the bottles. 🍷

Tuesday, June 11 we’ll be hanging with Patrick Cappiello of Monte Rio Cellars! He’ll be chatting all things New California and talking/tasting us through some of his new releases!

Following a successful career as a sommelier and restaurant owner in New York City, Patrick Cappiello set his sights on the West Coast, launching Monte Rio Cellars and Skull Wine Co. The pull towards winemaking happened organically, having spent years learning from various winemakers, among them his close friend, Pax Mahle.

As a restaurant buyer and young consumer, Patrick felt there was a lack of affordable, honest wines from California. Monte Rio Cellars, based in Lodi, is his answer to that. He produces a wide range of balanced, fresh, and food-friendly wines that are way too easy to drink.

Working with family owned, organically farmed vineyards and hands off winemaking, Patrick is achieving his goal of making delicious, hand-crafted wines in the spirit of old California.

We’re excited to welcome another outstanding project by Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman, Evening Land Vineyards. Among these special sites is the Seven Springs Vineyard.

Located in Oregon’s Eola Eola-Amity Hills, Seven Springs’ eastern exposure ensures the vineyard wakes up to the warmth of the morning sun. The vineyard’s position opposite the windy Van Duzer Corridor, mitigates hot, sunny afternoons in the Willamette Valley with cool winds from the Pacific. As valley temperatures increase throughout the day, warm air rises, replaced by cooling winds flooding in from the Pacific through the Van Duzer gap and across the vineyard. This daily cooling, along with an eastern aspect, gives the grapes the luxury of extended hang time on the vine.

2022 Seven Springs Chardonnay: from a cooler part of the vineyard, the grapes are fermented in used french oak barrels and aged on the lees. In the bottle: lightning acidity, crunchy white peach and subtle chalkiness balanced by creaminess from the lees.

2022 Seven Springs Pinot Noir: made in a lighter fresher style, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel and aged for 7 months in used barrels. In the bottle: spicy aromatics, juicy red fruits and pink peppercorn.

In 2017, Salvatore & Gabriele Bertolino revived their family’s winemaking business in western Sicily. Their vineyard practices are rooted in organic and biodynamic methods. In the cellar, they use natural winemaking techniques, emphasizing minimal intervention to let the wine reflect its true terroir.

The brothers cultivate two indigenous grape varieties:

▪️Catarratto: A white grape known for its fresh acidity and citrusy, floral notes. It’s a versatile variety that showcases the diverse terroirs of Sicily.

▪️Parpato (Quattro Rappe): A red grape thought to be related to Grenache with some Carignan qualities. It produces rich, fruity wines with a robust structure.

The Bertolino brothers honor their family legacy and contribute to the preservation of Sicily’s viticultural heritage through the cultivation of these indigenous grapes.

The Fuitina Bianco is 100% Catarratto that sees 3 days of skin maceration in uncovered open clay vessels. Aromatic with savory herbs, green tea and some salty sea air.

This Sunday (5/19) we’ll be joined by Rosalind Reynolds of Emme Wines for a free tasting on Cherry St!

This project focuses on farming grapes organically and making wine without additives. Rosalind works within a likeminded community of grape-growers and winemakers in Northern California at the PAX facility including beloved Martha Stoumen, Patrick Cappiello, and Pax and Pamela Mahle. 2018 marked the first year Rosalind set out to create something of her own, albeit with the welcome support of the talented people who surround her.

We’ve previewed the wines and they’re VERY tasty.

Mark your calendars 🗓️

Join us Tuesday, May 14 for a Meet & Greet with the lovely human behind Bodkin Wines & Where’s Linus?, Chris Christensen!

Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he stumbled upon his passion for winemaking during a wine tasting trip to Sonoma while studying at Stanford University. What began as a curiosity soon turned into a passion and career. Christensen now produces wines under his own brand, Bodkin Wines, inspired by a battle in the Hundred Years’ War. The Where’s Linus? line is a collab with natural wine importer Jenny & Francois to make fresh, approachable California sippers.

As an African American vintner, he actively promotes diversity and inclusion in the industry through various platforms and mentorship programs. His efforts have earned him recognition, including a spot in Wine Enthusiast’s 40 Under 40 list in 2020. Christensen is celebrated for both his activism and his skillful winemaking, establishing himself as a notable figure in the American wine scene.

History in a bottle from the Crivelli family 🍇

Castagnole Monferrato, an agricultural area near Asti (Piedmont), is renowned for its centuries-old cultivation practices, emphasizing grains, olives, and vines.

Two unique grape varieties, Ruchè and Grignolino, thrive here, showcasing the area’s distinctiveness. Ruchè with its rich red fruit flavors and subtle floral tones, and Grignolino with its tannic yet refreshing profile.

Ruchè and Grignolino are not household names because they’re not delicious; instead, because they’re very difficult to manage, both in the vineyard and the cellar.

Despite their challenges in cultivation and winemaking, these grapes hold cultural significance and are preserved by devoted families like the Crivellis.

Jonathan and Sara Crivelli, are guardians of Ruchè and Grignolino, producing exceptional wines that reflect the region’s heritage and complexity. Their wines not only offer a taste of history but also invite exploration of Castagnole Monferrato’s unique terroir.

Warmer temps have us coming back to Mediterranean wines again and again.

Vino Brkić is no exception! Hailing from Bosnia-Herzegovin, this tiny family estate focuses on native grapes, primarily Žilavka (white) and Blatina (red) through the lens of biodynamic practices.

The winemaking process follows the farming, allowing nature to speak for itself. Using gravity to avoid the need for pumps, gentle pressing, fermenting exclusively with native yeasts and bottling without filtration. The wines are pure, energetic and need to be sipped in the sun.

The Žilavka is loaded with juicy orchard fruits, lemon zest and dried Mediterranean herbs. Drink solo with fresh veggies or seafood. 🥦🐟

Monday, May 6, we’ll be opening our doors to host Slovenian winemaker Maks Kadivec of Pullus wines.

A long time staple of the shop, Ptujska Klet winery (where Pullus wines are made) is an ancient place whose cellars have been used for storing and aging wine since 1239. Located under the historic town of Ptuj founded by the Romans, the Ptuj Cellar is one of the oldest in Europe. Above it you’ll find a state-of-the-art modern winery focused on vinifying fresh, cool climate wines that Štajerska region is famous for. Varieties such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir thrive here and produce vibrant, elegant and fruit forward wines.
