This weekend, we have two great wines open for tasting! Stop by anytime this Saturday to try them with us.

Soalheiro Alvarinho, Monção e Melgaço- Portugal, 2024 ($21.99) – Melgaço, the northernmost point in Portugal, lies just south of the Minho River which separates Portugal and Spain. It’s wines are very similar to the Albarinos of Spain. Wine Advocate: 91 “Floral aromas and good ripeness and freshness with a dry, granite finish.”

Bonpas Ventoux Grand Reserve des Challieres, 2020 ($15.95) – Bonpas, a highly regarded southern Rhône producer, also makes this delicious Ventoux from the south-facing slopes of Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse. The grapes are Grenache (70%), Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan. Deep red in color, it has a very pretty, floral nose with a hint of freshly churned butter. There are flavors of black fruit, lovely hints of spice, and impressive length. This nicely balanced wine is perfect with a light chill.

This weekend we’re tasting three fantastic wines! Stop by anytime this Saturday to try them with us!

Lyrarakas Plytoì, Crete, 2019 ($26.49) - This is an organic and biodynamic Greek wine made from the Plytoì varietal (100%). The indigenous Plytoì was nearly extinct before it was rescued in the early 1990s by the Lyrarakis family. Pale yellow in color with clean fruity aromas of citrus, green apple, pear, and kiwi, a full and lively mouthfeel, and a firm, savory, minerally finish.

Ninety+ Cellars Chianti Riserva, Lot 144 ($11.99) - Only the central, “classico” region of Chianti can be called “Classico.” Riservas must be aged at least two years. This is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown at a family-run estate that dates back over a century. Egant and layered profile of dried flowers and ripe strawberries with lingering notes of earth and spice on the finish.

Giorgi Cellars Buttafuoco Oltrep Pavese “Clile Tre Donne,” 2011 ($19.99 net) - From Italy’s Lombardy region, Buttafuoco is a style, not a grape or subregion. This is 60% Croatina, 30% Barbera, and 10% Uva Rara. Obviously mature, it has an intense aroma of tertiary red fruits, spicy notes, and a light hint of vanilla. Quite flavorful with notes of ripe red fruits, spices, and a light smokiness with a relatively long finish. Complex and strong. Pair it with rich dishes.

This week we will be tasting a winning Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and another excellent Bordeaux value from the stunning 2022 vintage! Try them with us anytime on Saturday.

Lobster Reef Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough - New Zealand, 2023 ($15.95) - This lovely every-day white is intensely aromatic, bright, and full of tropical flavors. Balanced, refreshing, and generous on the palate, it’s named for the brightly colored Rock Lobsters that live off the coast. Wine Spectator: 89 “Fresh lemon-lime, passion fruit, and Key lime pie flavors are exuberant and mouth-watering in this white, with lemongrass notes on the finish.”

Château La Verrière Bordeaux Supérieur, 2022 ($19.99) – Bordeaux wines are NOT all expensive. Some are great values. Located 38 miles due east of the city of Bordeaux, La Verrière has been owned by the Bessette family for four generations. Alain Bessette is named among the ‘Talents de Bordeaux Supérieur’ every year, a shortlist of top winemakers there. This vintage received a gold medal at the Concours Général Agricole – Paris. It’s 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc aged 18 months in a variety of different barrels, one-third new.

This week we’re tasting a rose and a French red wine. Stop by any time to try them with us!

Château Gassier Rosé “Esprit Gassier,” Côtes de Provence, 2024 ($20.99) - A superb Provençal rosé, clearly superior to popular Summer in a Bottle and Whispering Angel. The vineyards underwent organic conversion in 2016. This is a blend of estate and neighboring fruit, specifically Grenache (39%), Cinsault, Syrah, and Rolle. The wine is light in color with peach nuances and delicate notes of white flowers and white fruits. Beautifully balanced.

Gabin et Félix Richoux Irancy, 2019 ($35.99) - Irancy is one of the least well-known red Burgundy villages because it is closer to Chablis than it is to the Côte d’Or. Its Pinot Noirs are a bargain! Wine Advocate (William Kelley): 92 “Brilliant, bursting with aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with rose petals, spices, and sweet loamy soil. Medium-bodied, supple, and seamless, its melting, structuring tannins are entirely concealed in an ample core of succulent, perfumed fruit.”

This week we’re tasting two GREAT wines! Stop by anytime this Saturday to try them with us.

Domaine Commanderie Quincy, 2023 ($18.99) - Quincy (Can-SEE,) comes from two Loire Valley villages just south-west of Sancerre. It is also made from Sauvignon Blanc. Jean-Charles Borgnat’ purchased 3.7 acres of young vines in La Commanderie (hence the name of the winery) when Jacques Rouzé needed to recapitalize after the catastrophic frost of 1991. The wine is herbal and crisp with a green apple taste and a finish of zesty lemon and clean minerality. Marvelous with oysters and most seafood! Gold medal, Concours Général Agricole.

Cascina Vèngore Monte di Stefano Barolo, 2018 ($38.99) - Warmer recent vintages have improved the quality of Barolos from producers with less advantageous sites. This Nebbiolo is light, fresh, and elegant. Relatively open-knit with moderate acidity, relatively light tannins, and expressive fruit and floral flavors. The bouquet is quite good for an inexpensive Barolo, and the flavors build in the mouth. Lots of character! Pretty impressive! Decanting helps.

This week we’re tasting a Rosé and a French red. Stop by anytime this Saturday to try them with us!

Château Sainte Roseline Rosé “Le Cloitre” Cru Classé, Côtes de Provence, 2024 ($19.49) – CERTIFIED ORGANIC and carries the Cru Classé designation (S-R was one of the 23 properties listed in 1955 as the best in Provence. James Suckling: 90 “A juicy, fruity, and refreshing rosé with dried strawberries, frozen berries, and mild spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity. Linear and joyful, with a fruity, delicious finish.”

Domaine Les Roches Bleues Brouilly Les Trois Loups, 2020 ($27.99) - Despite our best efforts, Cru Beaujolais wines have not developed the following they deserve, presumably because of their association with Beaujolais Nouveau. These wines are much, much better than that! Les Roches Bleues is named for the blue schist soil where it is grown. The property is run by Jonathan and Chloë Bassy, the third generation. Soft, juicy, and endearing. 8-10 months in oak casks, little or no filtering, little or no sulphites. Serve cool.

This week we’re tasting a white Burgundy and a Petit Verdot. Stop by anytime this Saturday to try them with us!

Nadège and Emmanuel Fellot Bourgogne Blanc, 2023 ($23.99) – This is a small, organic domaine in southern Beaujolais. The Fellot family has cultivated this land since 1829. The area is referred to as the Pierres Dorées, or golden stones, because of its golden-hued limestone. The wine has pretty green apple and flowers on the nose and a round, almost creamy texture with lemon curd, vanilla, and toasted almond. It’s focused and medium-textured with an excellent finish. Quite a white Burgundy value!

Pérez Cruz Chaski Petit Verdot, Maipo-Chile, 2018 ($27.99) – One of the 5 red Bordeaux varietals, Petit Verdot has fallen out of favor there because it doesn’t always fully ripen. That’s a shame because it can make a delicious wine with body, color, and loads of flavor. It has more success in warmer climates. Wine Advocate on the previous top vintage: 93! “Aged 16 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, 60% new. Fesh, complex, & vibrant. Tannins are fine, and there’s stuffing and balance to develop nicely. One of the finest Petit Verdot bottlings out there.” The new winery has been featured in architecture books.

We’re tasting two Italian wines and a canned sangria for this week’s tasting! Stop by any time this Saturday to taste with our team.

Colombaio di Cencio Toscana Bianco, 2021 ($24.99; Beekman’s special: $9.99) - Expensive at $25, this is a steal at $10! The perfect porch-pounder for warm weather! The blend is 40% Trebbiano, 40% Malvasia, and the rest Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Pinot Bianco. It was made in a serious style with some skin maceration and aging in 50% large oak barrels. Straw yellow with a distinctive bouquet and light vanilla notes. Only 250 cases were made.

Costa Stefanino (Nino Costa) Barbera d’Alba “Bardot,” 2021 ($19.99) – We’re huge fans of Barbera, and this one is a delicious, juicy crowd-pleaser. Winemaker Alessandro Costa cultivates the vineyards; his parents, Nino and Gemma, run the Azienda. They have adopted organic methods, using natural fertilizers and no herbicides. The wine ferments and ages 8 months in stainless steel. Delicious and very food-friendly.

Sangri Sangria ($17.99/4pk cans) - This is perhaps the best premade version we have ever tasted. It uses quality red wine as the base, Merlot grapes from Washington State’s Columbia Valley. And the owners of Sangri are Bergen County residents Deirdre and Erick Paley, and the formula is based on Deirdre’s family recipe (no artificial sweeteners, gluten free. A portion of sales are donated to the Navy SEAL Foundation.

This week we’re tasting a Chardonnay and a Rioja. Stop by any time this Saturday to try them with us!

Diatom Chardonnay, Santa Barbara, 2023 ($25.99) - Greg Brewer (of Brewer-Clifton) is one of the most highly regarded winemakers in Santa Barbara. Wine Spectator: 93 “This stunning wine leaps out of the glass, with concentrated flavors of white peach, quince, and pineapple plus floral accents of orange blossoms and lemon curd. Finishes with mouthwatering acidity, a note of crunchy sea salt minerality, and a whiff of lemon verbena. ”

Consejo de la Alta Rioja Riserva, 2010 ($19.99) - A mature and great value Rioja Reserva made from 100% Tempranillo grapes and aged 18 months in French barrique, this has reached its peak. The oak shows, but behind the wood is beautiful ripe fruit of cherries, coffee, toast, vanilla, balsamic, fig, and spice as well as near-perfect balance. This wine was a silver medal winner at Tempranillos al Mundo.

FREE WINE TASTING TODAY at Beekman Wines!!

La Reserve Saint Dominique Gigondas, 2023 ($24.99) - The village of Gigondas in the southern Côtes du Rhône is second only to Châteauneuf-du-Pape in reputation. The wines are very similar in style. La Reserve is the negoçiant (purchased grapes) arm of Domaine la Bastide Saint Dominique. This blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah offers a charming aroma of leather, cherry, and plum. It’s full-bodied and velvety, ending long and plush with hints of mocha.

Clos la Gaffeliere, St.-Emilion Grand Cru, 2015 ($33.99) - This is the second label of the highly regarded Château La Gaffeliere. It has reached its peak and is showing very nicely. It’s medium-bodied and straightforward, with plenty of cherry and plum preserve notes underscored by a red licorice edge. Lovely herbal notes and a lightly toasted vanilla accent hang on the finish. The tannins have completely mellowed. The blend was 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Château La Rose Belair Bordeaux Supérieur, 2019 ($18.99) - The 2nd in our tetralogy of red Bordeauxs. Château La Rose Belair is near Saint-Emilion, with almost 2/3 Merlot and the rest Cab Sauvignon and Cab Franc. Harvesting takes place at night to avoid oxidation and preserve the aromatics. The wine shows ripe red and black fruits (raspberry, cherry, blackcurrant) with a touch of spice and a nice, tangy finish. Excellent Bordeaux intro.

Finca Villacreces Pruno, Ribera del Duero, 2019 ($24.99) - Finca Villacreces borders Vega Sicilia, perhaps the most famous estate in all of Spain. Wine Advocate (Luis Gutierrez): 92 “The 2019 Pruno has some unusual aromas reminiscent of pine needles, balsamic and faintly herbal with moderate alcohol (they harvested early) and with very good balance and harmony. The aromas and flavors are pure and defined. It’s tasty, easy to drink, and has very fine tannins. Among the finest Pruno of recent times.”

Our tetralogy (one more than a trilogy) of Chianti Classicos was a lot of fun, so we’re going to do the same with Bordeaux. We’ll also be tasting a fine new California Cabernet. Come join us anytime Saturday that works for you.

Château Côte de Baleau, St.-Emilion, Grand Cru Classé, 2020 ($30.99) - Wine Advocate (Lisa Perrotti-Brown): 89 “The 2020 Côte de Baleau is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, harvested from 15th to 30th September and weighing in with an alcohol of 14.2%. It was aged for 16-18 months in 20% new oak barrels, 60% second-fill barrels, and 20% in vats. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little swirling to coax out youthful notions of crushed blackberries, mulberries, and kirsch plus hints of tar and dried Mediterranean herbs. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound with crunchy red and black fruits with a chewy texture and a lively backbone lifting the finish. Drink 2023-2032”

Original Wines Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, 2021 ($26.99) - When it comes to California Cabs, flashy Napa Valley has the reputation and high prices. Paso Robles offers value in a warmer climate, less refined style. Often overlooked is Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, which lies just over the Mayacamas Mountains from Napa and can offer high quality (this is the home of Silver Oak Cellars!), refinement, and reasonable prices. At the top end are very highly regarded Stuhlmuller, Aperture Cellars, Stonestreet, and The Setting. Better value comes from Alexander Valley Vineyards. We carry their Cab and Cab Franc. Original Wines is also a great value. It’s the creation of winemaker Molly Lippitt and industry veteran Richard Phoenix. Molly was mentored by celebrated winemakers such as Heidi Barrett, Philipe Melka, and Julien Fayard. She is now a wine consultant for Volker Eisele and others. Original Wines Cab comes from some top vineyards in the Alexander Valley Benchlands, at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains. The wine is bold, yet elegant with earth-driven blackberries, plum skins, dark cocoa, leather, and cardamom. It has freshness, balance, and well-integrated, mostly used oak.
