Two new wines this week from Piedmont, both highlighting the more serious side of Dolcetto d’Alba — a grape we think deserves a little more love. If you’ve never tried Dolcetto before, it’s a great alternative to Pinot Noir or Gamay, typically has notes of dark fruits, cocoa, earth, and herbs, and is super versatile when it comes to food pairings.

Both Cavallotto and Poderi Colla are old-school, serious producers and these wines serve as a nice introduction to the quality coming out of each winery. Both Dolcetto are sourced from a single vineyard, farmed organically, and $24/bottle.

A perfect wine for fall 🍁

This lighter-bodied, refreshing ‘Rosa’ from Domaine de Gaubourg is a blend of Grolleau Noir and Cabernet Franc from 50+ year old organically farmed vines on the bank of the Loire River. Look for red fruit and floral notes with crunchy acidity and a delicate texture. A great alternative to Pinot Noir or Beaujolais that will pair well with just about anything. $20/bottle

NEW FRENCHIES 🇫🇷

Cyril & Jean-Mi Rouge - A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from certified organic vineyards in the Languedoc region of southern France.  Naturally fermented in cement vats and then aged briefly in stainless tanks before bottling. Medium-bodied and fresh, with red and dark berry notes and hints of pepper and herbs. A great bistro bottle for every day enjoyment. $20/bottle

Domaine de Beaurenard Côtes du Rhône - Deep, dark, and complex, this Côtes du Rhône will satisfy on those cooler days just around the corner. 70% Grenache, 30% Syrah, biodynamically farmed, naturally fermented, and aged in neutral vessel to preserve the freshness of the fruit. $25/bottle

Francois Cazin Cour-Cheverny - Outstanding alternative to Chardonnay, this fuller-bodied French white from the Loire Valley is made from a grape called Romorantin. Notes of lime, honey, orange peel, and white flowers are balanced by zesty acidity. Just delicious! $20/bottle

Domaine Serge Laloue Sancerre Rouge - 100% Pinot Noir from the Laloue family’s 25 hectare estate in the heart of Sancerre. Organically farmed from vines planted in the calcareous and silex soils of the Domaine, this mineral-driven Pinot Noir is just so lovely… silky and just the right amount of acidity and notes of ripe cherry, raspberry, black tea, crushed rocks and herbs. And a tremendous value for French Pinot Noir to boot! ($29.99)

Sunday School is back for the fall season! Join us on September 22nd for Sunday School No. 4, a producer-focused tasting event featuring the wines of Melville Winery located in California’s picturesque Sta. Rita Hills AVA.

Melville was founded in 1996 by Ron Melville and is focused on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, three grape varieties ideally suited to the cool, coastal climate of California’s Sta. Rita Hills. Melville was established with a vision of producing 100% estate-grown wines, allowing for full control over the farming process and expression of terroir. The winery’s 120 acres are sustainably farmed and hand-harvested, emphasizing minimal intervention to let the fruit and terroir shine. Chad Melville (Ron’s son) now heads the operation and is focused on creating wines that are elegant, vibrant, and expressive of the their special terroir. Over the years, Melville has earned significant acclaim for its wines from both critics and consumers alike for their balance and precision. A true testament to cool-climate winemaking in California.

Tickets for this event are $15/person excluding taxes and fees and this tasting is limited to 20 attendees. Guests will have the opportunity to sample a wide selection from Melville’s range paired with light snacks. This producer-focused tasting is a casual, drop-in style event so you’re welcome to come anytime between 4PM and 5PM to begin the tasting.

Put this one on your ‘must try’ list…. Scar of the Sea’s 2023 Vino de los Ranchos Pinot Noir just arrived this week and it’s exceptional. There are very few Pinots from California (or anywhere) that deliver the quality that’s in this bottle for the price. Sourced from the organically farmed Rancho Ontiveros Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley, this Pinot balances supple red fruit characteristics with subtle, intriguing savory notes. Only 1447 cases produced. $34/bottle.

About the winery: Founded in 2012 by husband and wife Mikey (pictured) and Gina Giugni, Scar of the Sea is based in San Luis Obispo but produces wines from vineyards throughout California’s Central Coast including Edna Valley, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara, and the Cucamonga Valley. With a deep commitment to regenerative farming (the practice of restoring degraded soil health), Mikey and Gina farm their vineyards biodynamically and only source fruit from vineyards that are at minimum farmed organically. Scar of the Sea is California natural wine at its finest — prime vineyards farmed responsibly with minimal intervention in the winemaking process. As Mikey and Gina say, every bottle of their wine tells the story of the land and the community influenced by a year under the California sun.

Every year, we get in a couple of really special rosés. This is one of those wines.

Los Bermejos is located on the island of Lanzarote, approximately 70 miles off the coast of Morocco and the easternmost of Spain’s Canary Islands. To say this is one of the most extreme places to grow grapes on the planet is an understatement — vines have to grow feet through volcanic deposit and often have to be protected by stone walls from the intense winds (swipe left!). Making wine here is a project of passion which is evident in this gorgeous rosé made from the indigenous Listán Negro variety.

From the importer: “After a string of hard years of extreme drought for Bermejos, 2023 has turned out to be an incredible vintage for the Lanzarote pioneering winery and its marquee wine. It was an early harvest again due to the heat, but the crop was plentiful and the grapes balanced. The wine was directly pressed, with no maceration, and the wine has its classic pale color, with marked aromas of pomegranate, strawberries, and subtle flavors with refreshing acidity.”

Liquid sunshine ☀️

Introducing Umenoyado Aragoshi Yuzushu — a beautiful yuzu liqueur made from fresh yuzu juice, sake, premium spirit, and a touch of rock sugar for sweetness. Think of this like a Japanese version of Limoncello. Great on its own or as an ingredient in cocktails, one sip of this and you will be absolutely hooked!

New red for the summer rotation! Tenuta il Nespolo’s “Vino da Sete”(“wine of thirst”) is a delicious blend of co-fermented Barbera, Freisa, and Sangiovese from a tiny village in the south of Asti in Piedmont. Juicy, refreshing, and only 12.5% alcohol, this red is best served with a slight chill and enjoyed as is or paired with burgers, BBQ, or pizza. $23/1L bottle.

We love the two pictured here, staples in our rosé section every year… 2023 Domaine Pellé Pinot Noir Rosé from Loire and 2023 Mas de Gourgonnier Rosé from Provence. Both organic, $22 and $20 respectively. Shoot us a DM if you want us to throw one in the icebox for you 😉

New Beaujolais + Burg.

From left to right…. Domaine Saint Cyr ‘La Galoche’ Rouge 2022 is classic Gamay, just a lovely, juicy, easy-to-drink wine. A classic Bistro red. $24/bottle. (Biodynamic)

Domaine Gregoire Hoppenot Fleurie ‘Origines’ 2022 has a bit more body than the Saint Cyr, with a complex mix of red fruits, floral notes, and spice with lively acidity. It’s drinking so beautifully already. $22/bottle (Organic)

And Domaine Fichet Bourgogne Rouge 2022 is a bit of a unicorn. Delicious red Burg that actually tastes like red Burg and….it’s only $20/bottle.
