Freedomā€™s Frontier NHA grant awarded to Gardner Historical Museum
The Gardner Historical Museum, Inc. is pleased to announce that it received $1,842.89 in grant funding from Freedomā€™s Frontier National Heritage Area.
The grant funds will guarantee that The Gardner Historical Museum can repair and restore a well that is located on the museum complex grounds. Parts will be ordered to repair the well pump and restore operation of the pump. In addition the funds will allow the museum to excavate the area around the well and restore any needed height of the well to insure that visitors can experience the full use and enjoyment of the well.
Wells were a very important part of the movement west and pioneers needed wells to survive on the prairies as they struggled to expand west and be free from persecution by becoming independent land owners. Without wells, settlers would have been limited to waterways; rivers and lakes. Wells located on their own property allowed settlers to be self-sufficient.
Gardner is the site on the western pioneer movement where the 3 trails divide: Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails. We regularly receive visitors that wish to see where pioneers followed the trails and to learn about the trails. The well is a visible, outdoor landmark that shows the advancement of pioneer expansion. People can experience the pumping of a well and hear about the significance of water along the trails, towns and settlements going west.
The Gardner Historical Museum started in 2001 by a group of local citizens, preserves the rich history of Gardner and the people who have lived here. The museum has grown over the last 20 plus years. Starting in a Folk Victorian house, then adding a 1950ā€™s style home and currently expanding the complex, we are meeting the needs of the community to preserve our history. Operated only by dedicated volunteers, the museum continues to enrich the lives of visitors with new exhibits and events. Please come visit and see us for yourself: 204 W. Main Street and 207 W. Shawnee Street, Gardner, KS. https://www.gardnerhistoricalmuseum.com

Freedomā€™s Frontier National Heritage Area (FFNHA) is a federally funded nonprofit organization and affiliate of the National Park Service dedicated to building awareness of the struggle for freedom along the Missouri-Kansas border. Established by Congress in 2006, its nationally significant themes are the settlement of the frontier, the Missouri-Kansas Border War and Civil War, and the enduring struggle for freedom. These diverse, interwoven, and nationally important stories grew from a unique physical and cultural landscape. FFNHA inspires respect for multiple perspectives and empowers residents to preserve and share these stories. We achieve our goals through interpretation, preservation, conservation, and education for all residents and visitors.
