The Fuente and Newman families began The Cigar Family Charitable Foundation in 2001 and partnered with Instituto Dominicano de Desarrollo Integral (IDDI), a Dominican-based nonprofit organization, to focus on improving the lives of families in the mountainous Bonao cigar producing region of the Dominican Republic. The region suffers from extreme poverty, inadequate educational system, and poor water quality.
