The Real Wine Republic

The Real Wine Republic Only Organic, Biodynamic wine shop in Minnesota! L2, Int. Somm Guild, L1, Ct. of Master Somm and Jiujitsu Wine.

Wine Republic is the First Wine Shop in Minnesota featuring only Sustainable, Organic and Biodynamic Wines. Our producer's wines are created with respect to the land, water and to the people who work the land. We choose to work with farmers that don't use synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. Also in the refining process our vintners use organic and or free range eggs. We figured that

if we didn't bring it into our home we couldn't pass them off to you. OUR STORY

Wine Republic is the result of a labor of love over the last 10 years. Patti Judalena, a graphic designer for 20 years, wanted to do something else and that something else was open up a retail wine shop. She had her heart set to locate a shop near Grand Marais, MN but after meeting her husband RJ and the birth of their little girl, Excelsior, MN became the home for the shop. Patti enrolled in the International Sommelier Guild wine program and earned Levels I & II Certificates. Prior to opening the shop Patti always tasted wines with RJ although his favorite wine is beer with any spirits a close second. RJ and Patti now do the wine buying together and the best part of that job is bringing in products we know our customers will love. Wine Republic offers only wines that are sustainable, organic or biodynamic. Beer is organic or gluten free, and the ciders and spirits also do not use chemicals in their production. We look forward to working with our customers and learning their palates. So come in and enjoy the best wine and spirits this side of Bacchus.

We have a lovely little tasting tonight as we do every Friday night, 5-7 pm Open House.

Bianchi New Age White
A light yellow-green colored wine, with fruity and floral aromas of great intensity. Balanced acidity leads to soft, semi-sweet and slightly effervescent flavors and mouth feel. It is an extremely refreshing and vivacious. Enjoy it as a Tincho – served over ice with a slice of lime. Perfect to enjoy as an aperitif or with food.

Portal da Calçada Rosé, 2023
One of our top-selling rosé, The Portal da Calçada Rosé showing a slight salmon color expresses the character of the Vinho Verde region with a fruity aroma and light floral notes with a lively acidity. DOC Vinho Verde, Portugal

From young vineyards, it is a fruity, delicately complex wine – an ideal companion at the table. It’s predominately Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, with smaller quantities of Freisa, Albarossa, Pinot Noir. The varieties are vinified one by one, to express their personality and uniqueness. Finger Lakes, NY Wine Tasting with Ravines Winemaker Morten Hallgren
Crafting elegant and expressive wines using Old World winemaking practices
Thursday, May 9, 6-7:30 pm
Seated & Guided Tasting
Presented by Morten Hallgren, European Winemaker/Oenologist, Ravines

Tickets: Free, wine club members | $20, non members

About Morten Hallgren
When Morten and Lisa started Ravines in 2001, they were the only winery in the Finger Lakes with a Winemaker holding a formal degree and training from Europe and a winery pursuing a traditional winemaking approach – making exclusively dry, vinifera wines. Ravines quickly became regarded as a top wine destination in the Eastern USA and has consistently gained national awards, noteworthy press, high scores and international accolades.

Morten also pioneered the bone-dry, mineral-tinged Riesling style that has since become the flagship Finger Lakes wine to critical acclaim. In addition to Ravines success with dry white wines, they are also heralded for top terroir-driven red and refined, methode champenoise sparkling wines. The winery has grown significantly through the last 18 years, and while small on an international scale, Ravines owns 130 acres of prime estate vineyards.

The Ravines approach has been and will remain to pursue what Morten calls “Transparent Winemaking”: striving to grow the highest quality grapes while remaining good stewards of the land. To Ravines, this also means employing sustainable farming practices that limit erosion and maintain excellent vine-balance, with an eye towards organic practices. Ravines was chosen as Wine & Spirits Magazine Top 100 Winery of the World three times, the most recent in 2022.

Ravines Finger Lakes Dry Riesling, 2020
This Riesling is grown in limestone and shalestone soils on the steep slopes surrounding the Finger Lakes. A beautiful and succulent, dry riesling that delivers fresh and mouthwatering acidity with elegant ripe fruits and mineral finish will have you looking forward to the warmer weather.

James Suckling, 93 points
For an entry-level wine this is a stunner! Wonderful nose of white peach, lemon blossom and jasmine. So succulent, with excellent ripeness and concentration, but nothing flashy or any hint of opulence. The best thing about the wine is the long, very silky finish. And this is properly dry.

Wine Enthusiast, 92 points
From an excellent vintage and an equally acclaimed producer, this is an opulent and appealing bottling from first sniff. Gentle lamp oil and candlewax notes weave between green apple and lemon rind. The palate is crisp and dry, with less upfront fruit but a lovely tang of citrus acidity, a stony minerality and a waxy texture to the finish. It’s a bargain for the quality.

Ravines Chardonnay, 2020
Textbook, cool-climate chardonnay. Intense and aromatic, with meyer lemon, white flowers and hints of nutmeg. Ripe mango and pear melds with a stony minerality on the palate, both elegant and creamy with subtle spices.

Ravines Gewurztraminer, 2021
“This straw colored Gewurztraminer from the Finger Lakes opens with a fragrant and attractive lychee and ginger blend with hints of lemon. On the palate, this wine is medium plus bodied with medium acidity. The flavor profile is a stony mineral and lychee blend with notes green tea. I also detected hints of white pepper and ginger. The finish is dry, and its flavors and acidity fade away nicely. I would pair this Gewurz with a Thai chicken coconut curry. Enjoy” – Ken’s Wine Rating: Very Good (89)

“Dynamic aromatics of Asian pear, mango and sweet spices jump from the glass. Quintessential balance is paramount to this wine's fresh and vibrant mouthfeel. The acidity is fully integrated for such a young wine, providing verve and staying power on the dry finish.” Winemaker Notes

Ravines Cabernet Franc, 2021
100% estate, sustainably grown Cabernet Franc from our White Springs and 16 Falls Vineyards. Incredibly fresh and inviting with aromas of redcurrant, cranberries and mountain herbs. The palate is pure and elegant, with notes of raspberries and hints of earth and spice. A perfect rendition of Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc, aged for a year in our 6-year-old, 2000 liter Austrian and Hungarian Oak casks.

Wine Enthusiast, 92 points
There are some charred meat and mushroom undertones to this plump brambly berried Seneca Lake Cab Franc, with a dried herbal edge. Lovely plump cherry fruit concentration balances the tart acidity and austere, sappy tannins on this midweight red that’s perfect for in-between-season sipping.

Ravines Late Harvest Vignoles, 2015
Our Late Harvest Vignoles shows all of the classic characteristics of a Botrytis dessert wine: amber color resulting from the high level of Botrytis, intense fruity aromas as well as typically associated with this type of wine and a long, complex taste that lingers for several minutes. The high acidity level resulting both from the Vignoles grape variety and the Botrytis provides a welcome balance to the residual sugar.

Calcu Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Reserva Especial Colchagua Valley, 2021

This white blend has a pale olive green color. Many layers of citric and tropical aromas, such as pink grapefruits and mangos, come together to accomplish an expressive and aromatic wine. On the palate the highlight is the freshness of the Sauvignon Blanc and the complexity of the Semillon. The Sauvignon Blanc delivers freshness and smooth tropical notes, while the Semillon conveys citric hints and structure. The 2021 vintage has a very special character, in which concentration and elegance are naturally balanced, generating a wine with a lot of personality and excellent complexity.

Apaltagua Chardonnay, 2020
A lovely brilliant yellow hue, our Apaltagua Reserva Chardonnay has flecks of green, and is clean and bright. Aromatically, it reveals hints of tropical fruit, such as passion fruit and pineapple. In the mouth it is fresh, with a hint of minerality and a finish that is delicate but elegant, and leaves a persistent note of citrus at the end.

The grapes for our Apaltagua Reserva Chardonnay come from vineyards located in the Casablanca Valley, a region known for its marked marine influence, and for being the most favorable valley in Chile for the production of premium white wines. Harvested by hand at night, the grapes are carefully transported in bins of 450 kilograms to the winery and processed immediately, in order for the grapes to remain intact, and so that the organoleptic quality of the grapes is preserved.

Apaltagua Pinot Noir Reserva Estate Grown Tricao Valley, 2020
Aromas of cherry and cranberry shape the nose of this easy-sipping Pinot Noir. The palate leans towards herbaceous flavors mixed with black pepper and smoked paprika.

The Apaltagua Reserva Pinot Noir possesses a clean, brilliant, ruby red color and emphasizes aromas of cherries and raspberries, well combined with soft notes of oak. In the mouth, it boasts smooth and elegant tannins followed by a sophisticated finish.

Gillmore Winery Pais Mariposa Old Vines Dry Farmed Valle del Maule, 2021
Produced in small batches from old vines, the País has a natural acidity that lends well to aging. It has aromas of strawberries and raspberries and in the mouth it is dry, fresh, balanced and medium-bodied. País is a uniquely Chilean variety and is produced from estate fruit that is dry-farmed.

Vina Maquis Cabernet Franc Gran Reserva Valle del Colchagua, 2019
The Maquis Cabernet Franc is grown in the Colchagua Valley. The wine is made from grapes grown on the Maquis estate, between the Chimbarongo Creek and the Tinguiririca River in central Colchagua Valley. These elements are ideal for producing Cabernet Franc grapes that are full and rich, yet display balance and elegance.

The 2019 Cabernet Franc Gran Reserva is 90% Cabernet Franc, 9% Carménère and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon from Palmilla, Colchagua, barrel-aged for 12 months. Garnet red in color, this is an expressive red with open aromas of black currant and ash along with twists of herb and pencil box. The compact flow is channeled and lent character by fine- grained, reactive tannins, and the finish is cleansing.

Vermut Flores Rose Vermouth
The Rosé Vermouth is bright and crisp, with a base of rosé Tannat, estate grown in one of Uruguay’s most compelling vineyards. It is a medium pink color, with complex spice and floral notes. Serve it over ice with a slice of lemon and olives, with tonic water, or as a Spritz with sparkling wine and a slice of orange. A perfect aperitif.

Look for a pretty blush hue and mild floral aroma with a fleeting berry hint. The palate echoes the juicy berry note, braced up with grapefruit pith bitterness and finishing with peach nectar and a mild floral exhale.

Chateau Ducasse Bordeaux Blanc, 2022
This Bordeaux blanc is made from 60% Semillon, 35% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle vines planted in complex soils of clay and limestone on fissured rock. The wine is bone dry, even if your first whiff of sunny, slightly tropical fruit leads you to expect otherwise. On the palate, it is luscious and mouth coating with generous passion fruit and lychee, and yet it is racy at the same time constructed along a sturdy spine of chalk and acidity, it bears the classic Sauvignon Blanc notes of lime and grass. Bordeaux

Markus Huber Kontrast, 2022
Markus Huber is one of Austria’s leading and multi-award winning and acclaimed wine producers - decided from the beginning to create his natural wine with a focus on elegance and finesse. Kontrast has a straw yellow color, delicate bouquet of cinnamon and herbal tea, racy acidity, bone dry, tight structure, light-bodied alcohol, chalky texture, immensely invigorating with a long salty and fine finish.

Figuière Signature Magali Rosé, 2023
Figuière is located in La Londe-les-Maures between Marseille and Nice with vineyards that lie just a few hundred meters from the Mediterranean Sea. Blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of citrus and small red fruits. A nice attack on the palate with a taste of Apricots and especially pink grapefruit from the Provence. This wine is a great aperitif but also pairs with strong spices like Curry.

Pecchenino San Luigi Dogliani DOCG, 2022
100% dolcetto. The vines are cultivated with guyot and have a density of 5000 plants per Ha. The wine is the product of several vineyards with south-east, south and south-west exposures. The soil is calcareous-clayey. After pressing, the must ferments in steel tanks for 10-12 days at a temperature of 26°C. After a first racking the malolactic fermentation develops naturally.
Aged only in steel tanks. Red-purple color with violet nuances. Characterized by aromas of blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and red cherries. Mineral notes. Medium body, soft tannins, moderate acidity and good balance. Piedmont, Italy

Winemaker Notes
“Aromas of molasses, vanilla extract, brown sugar, roasted pear, dried prune and rose. Dark chocolate with dusty tannin, rich blueberry pie, warm baking spice.” - Soren Dietz, Winemaker

Paxton NOW Preservative Free Shiraz, 2022
In color this McLaren Vale Shiraz is vibrant purple with red hues. Red and wild berry aromas including raspberries, strawberries, mulberries and plums abound on the nose. The palate is medium bodied in keeping with this "drink now" style, and flavors of bright and fresh red berry fruits dominate, followed by a mid palate packed with layers of fruit and spice concluding with silky tannins and a velvet finish. McLaren Vale, South Australia

Blackboard Merlot Columbia Valley, 2020
Blend of 78% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. The 2020 Blackboard Merlot was crafted from multiple vineyards in Washington State; Soaring Eagle, McNary, and Four Feathers. Farmed using sustainable practices, the vines were harvested in the early fall mornings of 2020. The wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, with three months on oak (45% new French oak). After careful evaluation and blending by our winemaker, only 797 cases were produced.

Schplink Gruner Veltliner, 3L Bag-in-Box
Weingut Norbert Bauer consists of 90 ha of sustainably farmed vineyards in the picturesque Pulkautual area of the Weinvertel, near the river Pulkau, very close to the Czech border. Organic Gruner Veltliner. Gently pressed and allowed to macerate for 12 hours to increase aromatics. The spontaneous fermentation lasted 22 days at a cool temperature in stainless steel tank. It remained on the fine lees until 12 hours before filling to keep the wine as young and fresh as possible. Lightly fined and filtered. Niederösterreich, Weinviertel, Austria

Weingut Brand Riesling, 2022
Founded in 1891, the Brand winery has been producing wine in the Pfalz for five generations. Daniel and Jonas' father, Jürgen, always farmed their vines responsibly, but when his children took over, they immediately transitioned to organic viticulture, gaining certification in 2017. The Brothers Brand also utilize biodynamic treatments, always experimenting to discover which practices work best in their vines. All of their wines are made with little, if any, added sulfites.

Planet Oregon Soter Pinot Noir Willamette Valley, 2022
“This fresh, tangy and nicely concentrated wine is alive with black cherries, sour cherries, orange zest, hints of cloves and pine. Aged in neutral barrels, its medium body and moderate tannins give a great, snappy texture. Certified sustainable. Drink now.” 91 points, James Suckling

Sandy Giovese Vino Rosso, 3L Bag-in-Box
Blend of 87% Sangiovese and 13% Trebbiano. Exploding with fresh cut violets and ripe bing cherry, this easy-drinking, low-alcohol, light-bodied red wine offers juicy cherry and pomegranate fruit with aromas of wisteria, finishing with a silken texture and a crisp, clean, fruity finish. Serve chilled. Marche, Italy

Cesar Marquez Perez Bierzo Mencia Parajes, 2020
A regional blend of Mencía and Alicante Bouschet from rising star, César Márquez. There’s a little more ripeness and concentration in the 2020 Parajes, which matured in well-seasoned (at least fourth use) barriques and a 5,000-liter oak foudre. It’s a little rounder and creamier, a more powerful wine (it was bottled 15 days before I tasted it) with a nice Bierzo character. 93 Points, Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com

Geo Benz & Sons Classic American Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey
Geo. Benz & Sons Classic American Bourbon Whiskey is a farm-to-table whiskey that is produced locally in Minnesota with a proprietary mash bill that contains 90% corn. Bottled at 90 proof, this pre-Prohibition style bourbon is smooth and oaky with notes of vanilla, honey, and spice.

Vinified from the same grapes as the Fritz Müller semi-sparkling wine, this version entices sipping one or two glasses more without regret the next day. Wonderfully pure, it is best enjoyed chilled to 8°C, on the rocks, or as an ingredient in virgin cocktails.

Pisano Torrontes Rio De Los Pajaros, 2022
The Pisano winery in Progreso, Uruguay, was founded in 1914 by an Italian immigrant family and has become one of the country's most respected bodegas. The vineyards were planted in 1914 by Cesare, the son of Francesco Pisano, who arrived in Uruguay in 1870. The winery produces hand-crafted wines with distinctive character oriented to the high-quality, niche market.

Elegantly aromatic, this estate grown and bottled white is hand crafted from 100% Torrontes. Displaying an inviting floral bouquet and vibrant peach and citrus flavors, hints of spice can be detected on the dry finish.

I Lauri Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Lume, 2021
The iLauri Lume Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is a beautiful white wine, pale straw yellow color in the glass, this wine shows serious aromas of peaches and sliced apples and on tasting, the wine is balanced with a light acidity and layers of fruit. A bright and refreshing white wine bursting of apples, peaches and citrus notes.

The Sunny Pinot Noir will have you at first sip. Riveting flavors of juicy berry, black cherry and pomegranate lead into a silky finish with a hint of toasty oak. Proof positive that the glass is half full. A zero sugar, low alcohol and 85 calorie per serving wine (30% less calories than an average serving) that is positively delicious! Monterey, Central Coast, California

Piattelli Grand Reserve Malbec, Cafayate Valley, 2020
From high in the Andes surrounding Salta come Piattelli’s Cafayate wines, grown at over 5,890 feet elevation. The distinctively colorful northwest Argentina mountains, formed by many geological layers, inspired our labels and our regionally distinct approach to winemaking. This wine represents the best of the crops. An intense red color and aromas of black fruits, vanilla and smoke. These aromas are transformed to give the wine great structure and body on the palate.
