If you shop at our Edgewood store, you may have noticed the Bitcoin ATM in the front of the store. I want to tell you the story about this.
First of all, I am a fan of the potential of crypto currencies, so I was open when I got approached about this ATM. And in full disclosure, they pay us $300 a month for 2 sqf of floor and access to a power outlet.
It didn't take me long to realize that these machines are only used for two reasons: Some people use them to launder cash, for example old w**d growers who don't want to get involved with the OLCC system. I get that, and they really don't do any harm.
But much more often, these machines are used by scammers. They prey especially on the elderly, convincing them that they are going to be arrested, or a loved one harmed, etc, if they don't deposit thousands in this machine. These people are very convincing and they have a ton of information about you. It's pretty scary. They even sometime send deep-faked videos or voicemails from loved ones. They are all scams.
The other thing we see is confidence scams, usually involving beautiful women 'befriending' lonely men, and giving them 'investment advice'. This is also all fraud. They don't exist, they don't like you, and you will lose all your money!
So, why do we keep this machine, you may ask? That's an easy answer: Because if we didn't it would be somewhere else, and they don't have curt! Curt has now intervened and stopped at least 29 of these scams, saving people a combined hundreds of thousands of dollars of their hard-earned money! I have just completed my 6th intervention. A young, seemingly quite intelligent woman who was so freaked out, it took me 20 minutes to talk her down, and in the end she gave me her phone to hang it up, because she was trembling so much. That poor lady was so terrified! They were so convincing, they had sent her pictures of court orders for her arrest and what not. Oddly enough, an hour earlier I got a call from a man with a heavy African accent, asking if our bitcoin machine was working. In the end, I saved her from putting a bag full of money into the machine and got a big tearful hug in return. I have to say it felt great to help a victim defeat those evil bastards. I then sent her to the EPD to get a debriefing, so that she can be assured that nobody is coming to arrest her.
But the real hero is curt (yes, he spells it with a lower case c) who does this almost every week and has saved people so much! Let's all hear it for curt! (no picture of him for privacy reasons)
