Ironman Update: After deciding 10 months ago to do a full Ironman this year (with no prior triathlon experience at that point), I crossed the finish line this past Sunday at IM Chattanooga in 9:47, which was good enough for top 24% in my age group which I was stoked about. I figured on finishing between 11-12 hours.

Swim was cancelled due to the hurricane so we had a staged bike start, 2 at a time every couple seconds. This was weird because you were not warmed up and just hopping on your bike and going to town.

It drizzled and rained the entire bike, which was actually welcome because the temps were perfect in low 70s, just enough to be warm. I was worried about my feet being wet all day but this never became an issue even later in the run. Finished in 5.5 hours which was insane for me. The race is 1000% better than training rides. I had a crappy bib number and started in the back and it was friggin awesome passing bike after bike all through the race! Made it fly by. I kept singing inside of my aero helmet Black Sabath “I, am, IronMan” for 5.5 hours straight! I was flying 42mph in the rain on the last few miles of the bike course, on the edge of death. Again, it was amazing.

We got to get passed by a bunch of the pros. I averaged 20mph which I thought was epic, and these guys/gals averaged 28mph! 40% faster, insane! They are aliens.

The rain stopped just in time for about half the run, and then downpoured right on the bridge at the end of the first lap, it was awesome! Yall can say we didn’t swim, but we were soaked all day. Again I was worried about wet socks for the remaining half marathon but all was just fine.

Things I learned: 6x uncrustables + 5x GU gels was probably too much nutrition on the bike and resulted in time sucking poops 💩 later in the race that were only cured by Imodium (props to this group for that suggestion in my kit).

Also, 5x Maurten gels at the run aid stations with caffeine is enough to make you not sleep AT ALL after completing an Ironman. Whatever is in those packets can’t be legal. (But they do feel great!)

I also made the mistake of a relatively new pair of shoes on the run with only 7 miles on them, and found out only after my 3rd stop of untying and removing to inspect my socks that the issue is they were tied too tied near my toes not letting my foot spread resulting in pain. I loosened the shoes on 3rd time and they were a million dollars after that, but I probably lost 5 min there.

As mentioned the 3 x 💩 stops probably cost close to 15 min of time, so next race I’ll pay more attention to actual calculated fueling needs instead of winging it. I was still able to complete the marathon in a personal PR for me of a 9:45 pace, even with the issues, and AFTER the bike, savage! (I was shooting for around 9-9:15 average pace).

The Ironman atmosphere is nothing like anything I’ve experienced running city marathons like Detroit, or ultra runs, mountain bike races, etc.

I felt like aid stations were in absolute abundance with 20+ people at each one, it felt like there were thousands of people cheering us on, holding signs, the energy was absolutely incredible! I made sure to keep a smile on my face the entire time!

Never did I feel like quitting, or even walking, because there was so much positive energy from the people around me that you were able to stay out of your own head and just keep running the race. I met so many kick ass people and had some great conversations. In another post I outlined how much I’ve spent for this Ironman this year to the tune of around $8400, and it was all totally worth it. It was the coolest, funnest, and one of the hardest races I’ve done and will definitely do more in the future. Even my family had a great time watching and want to come back to another one with more of our family because it was such a good vibe.

Still planning next year, but will likely do MI 70.3 for sure since it’s in my backyard. I have fallen in love with sprints and Olympics as well and plan to do those again next year.

🤷‍♂️ Nerd info on my training:
-Self coached (no idea what I was doing, bought a cheap training plan off training peaks and started seriously training 12 weeks out). In April I did a 50 mile ultra run as prep for IM and over the summer I did 4x sprints and 2x Olympics for practice.

For the whole 10 months from when I started learning to swim in November up until the race, I averaged per week:
Swim: 1.65 hours/week
Ride: 2.36 hours/week
Run: 3.34 hours/week
Treadmill/stairstepper: 0.5 hours/week
Weightlifting: 2.41 hours/week

10.26 hours/week average
___________________________

If we look at just the last 12 weeks leading up to the race from July 1st:
Swim: 2.10 hours/week
Ride: 5.77 hours/week
Run: 4.31 hours/week
Treadmill/stairstepper: 0.44 hours/week
Weightlifting: 2.35 hours/week

15 hours/week average

After about 10 months of preparing for my first Ironman, Race Week is here!

In 3 days I’ll be competing at Ironman Chattanooga 140.6. Since starting training in November 2023 I have logged the following:

Swim 143,215 yards
Bike 2,076 miles
Run 1,440 miles
Lifting sessions: 111 hours

Dividing that over 322 days, it could break down as:

Swim 444 yards per day
Bike 6.44 miles per day
Run 4.44 miles per day
Lifting session: 20 minutes per day

Despite all the training you’ll never truly feel ready, but you have to trust the process! 💪

When I started, I couldn’t swim more than 25 yards without gassing out. I signed up before ever completing any triathlon, though I already had plenty of running experience and some cycling. The fear of the 140.6 kept me motivated all year. I did 4x sprint and 2x Olympic events over the summer to prep and I very surprisingly podiumed my age group at every one and even came 1st at one event.

I’ve learned a lot, and the experience has been awesome, but I have to say I am excited to get back to normal training as I really ramped up training 12 weeks ago and looking forward to having free time on the weekend again.
