NORTHWEST ITALY
Previous wine clubs have hinted around Piedmont, one of the most beloved Italian wine regions amongst us nerds, and it only seemed right that we give it the proper attention it deserves with a deep dive.
Two grapes important to understanding the region capture the focus for this wine club: Nebbiolo and Cortese. They’re supported with some high-caliber guest appearances, but for our purposes they form the crux of our discussion of this important part of Northwest Italy.

Piedmont — or Piemonte — translates literally to “the foot of the hills” and has some undulating terrain before its ascent into the Alps. This makes for some amazing microclimate influence — moving a few meters might make for entirely different growing conditions. The classification of Nebbiolo capitalizes on these nuances, and the bulk of what we see imported here in the United States will be labeled as “Langhe Nebbiolo, Barolo or Barbaresco” in refference to the distinct regions they come from. This month’s reds feature a Langhe Nebbiolo that is an incredible example and highly representative of the grape overall, a cheeky autumnal Nebbiolo-dominant blend from the neighboring region of Vallée d’Aoste, and a offspring of Nebbiolo. The sparkling rosé in this month’s bubbles club is also 100% Nebbiolo.

With respect to Cortese (Court-eh-say), this is a varietal that is almost exclusively found in Italy, with 90 percent of the plantings in Piedmont and the earliest recordings dating back to the 17th century. Many of you have already fallen in love with the Villa Sparina Gavi, the one in the fun yellow bottle; Cortese is the main grape in that wine, with Gavi referring to the region.

Launch Pad Brewery - Strawberry Moon

A surprisingly subtle strawberry character underlies this otherwise malty ale that features a biscuity, shortcake complete with a dry finish. The subtlety of strawberry can be attributed to real, fresh strawberries, a tough fruit from which to extract flavor during brewing, and not cheap syrup or concentrate. This is a lovely ale to sip at any time of the year but doing so as June arrives just might remind you of summers eating shortcake smothered in fresh strawberries and whipped cream at your hometown ice cream parlor.
