🍷Grand Tasting: Burgundy & Piedmont 🇫🇷🇮🇹

Thanks to everyone who came to our event on Saturday evening!

It was an awesome event for lovers of great wine and black truffles! Our events are designed to showcase the most iconic wines from the best producers: We opened rarities such as whites from Domaine Roulot, Barbera from Lorenzo Accomasso, Sylvie Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin and Grand Cru Corton from Pierre Guillemot. All paired with and freshly shaved Burgundy truffles 🍕🍄‍🟫

If you’re interested in joining our next event make sure you’re subscribed to our email newsletter, or better yet, sign up for one of our 4 Wine Clubs! Members get first dibs on tickets 🎟️

Don’t want to commit to boatloads of wine? Check out the Drink Piedmont Club, which includes two bottles of wine from Italy’s greatest region every other month (12 bottles a year).

We have a few ideas in mind for the next one, and while it’s hard to top Piedmont and Burgundy we will do our best! We’re always coming up with new ideas to make wine as fun and exciting as possible: whether it’s a blind tasting table or a chance to win a magnum of Grand Cru Burgundy!

✨Bodegas Granbazán ✨

Winery #2 in our Rias Baixas, Spain adventure was Granbazán.

The Granbazán winery is located in the Val do Salnés subregion in the town of Vilanova de Arousa, very close to Cambados, the “World Albariño Capital.”

Inspired by the great wineries of France, Manuel Otero Candeira built and founded the Granbazán chateaux in 1981, surrounded by pergola-trained Albariño vines. They were a pioneer in the region, and since 2017, Pedro Martínez Hernández took ownership and invested in modern winemaking equipment, trained enologists, and temperature controlled fermentation.

We were guided through the winery to see production and aging and of the range of their Albariño.

🟢 Etiqueta Verde - the most crisp, vibrant and fresh expression of Albariño
🟠 Etiqueta Ambar - extended lees aging results in more texture and roundness
🔵 Limousin - Pioneer of oak-aged Albariño! Aged in foudre barrels for 4-6 months, resulting in more intensity, texture and age worthiness
🟣 Don Alvaro de Bazan - Made only in the best vintages from selected plots, and aged on the lees for a minimum of 2 years

These are delicious, precise wines that are consistently excellent. We had the most thorough and informative guide that embodied hospitality and knowledge. Looking forward to having the full lineup in the shop soon!

⭐️ Bodegas Albamar⭐️

Until visiting them earlier this month, we didn’t appreciate the small scale and relative youth of this winery which has existed for less than 20 years. Their crowded space squished in between houses, vines, and a restaurant proves that great wine can be made without multi-million dollar wineries, and we’d argue the most interesting wines are more likely to be made in humble spaces such as Albamar.

The Albarinos they craft all lean towards the crisp, salty, floral, highly mineral style with some single block wines showing more floral aromatics. We tried some Albariño with 10+ years of age and they were still so fresh but with an exotic complexity from the age. You can tell all the wines are from grapes grown on the coast, just steps from the Atlantic.

We were lucky to sit down to a lunch prepared by winemaker Xurxo’s mom at the next door restaurant. We were greeted by copious amounts of fresh seafood and then came the housemade Spanish Tortilla with garden tomatoes. All while sampling several different bottlings of Albariño and even an incredible Albariño pet nat. We also tried some of his red wines from both Ribeira Sacra and Rais Baixas. The Mencia was in our Drink Better Club this month!

A special thanks to Xurxo and Maria for the amazing lunch and hospitality! - we have always enjoyed these wines but we now have a deeper appreciation for how truly special these wines are! Drink more Albariño!

🌧️🌱 Rais Baixas 🇪🇸

We were fortunate to spend 3 rainy days in this coastal NW Spanish wine region, mostly within the Val do Salnés subregion. The most unique quality of this region is that there are very few large, contiguous vineyards but instead a patchwork of tiny plots between estuaries and residential areas.

⭐️ Albariño is the star and here and this wine easily holds its own among the greatest white wines of the world. The wines are so bright, crisp, fresh and fruity with high acidity. The range of styles is what surprised us most: the current vintage are almost a bit spritzy and fresh, while Albariño with some age can hold a golden hue, have aromas similar to Viognier (floral and spicy), and remind us of a ripe Riesling! The name Albariño indeed means “the white from Rhine” which is a nod to German Riesling.

Some of the vineyards are mere feet from the Atlantic and many vineyards are Pergola or canopy trained to allow the sea breeze to keep the grapes dry and avoid mildew. In the ocean inlets, the “rias”, are numerous mussel farms. Mussels are one of the most appreciated and important gastronomic delicacies in Galicia, and they are a big part of the local economy in addition to wine!

Further inland, there are more vines at higher altitudes, and we were lucky to enjoy a wine from vines over 200 years old which have never succumbed to phylloxera (Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas)! The soil and the remoteness of the vines help them avoid this terrible microscopic insect.

A tiny amount of red wine is also produced here (Caiño Tinto, Espadeiro, Loureira Tinta, Sousón), but with the cool climate and plentiful rain they are low alcohol and savory making for a unique pairing option.

Albariño is a compelling and complex wine that really can’t be replicated anywhere else on earth.

TL;DR: We love Albariño. You need to drink more Albariño because it’s delicious and absolutely perfect with seafood 🦞

🥇The Best Piedmont Selection🥇

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve been awarded the #1 Piedmont wine list by ⭐️ and the #2 overall list in Denver! 🥈

Building an online shop that showcases our full selection has been a true labor of love. Each product is meticulously photographed, and our live inventory ensures you always know exactly what’s in stock. Most listings also feature detailed descriptions, so you can fully explore each bottle before making your choice.

On top of that, we strive to offer the best prices in the market, ensuring local shopping is the best choice as opposed to buying from an out of state store.

This recognition means the world to our small team! Competing with much larger stores that have greater resources makes this achievement even sweeter. Our depth of knowledge, dedication to efficiency and attention to detail continues to set us apart, and we couldn’t be prouder of the hard work that got us here!

🦖 Jura 🦕

We went to Jura on a trip to France in 2014 and had the opportunity to see this region for the first time during harvest. It has a magical charm to it: it looks something like the village in Beauty and the Beast. Photo #5 is a giant cluster of grapes 🍇 made from grape clusters and it gets paraded through the village of Arbois to signify harvest.

Jura in eastern France is (already) the next Burgundy. Some producers have seen prices skyrocket as the wines get more attention, but most have just kept making incredible wines without much notice: this family domaine is one of them - not only have their vineyards been farmed organically for decades, but they also farm cows for comté cheese and grains for bread. 🥖🧀

Fans of Pinot Noir who don’t know Ploussard (also spelled Poulsard) and Trousseau need to try these reds - the Ploussard is everything savory and wild with a color barely darker than rosé. Trousseau is a bit more fleshy but still served before the Pinots, which is the one Jura grape this family does not farm.

The vineyards combine for 5.5 hectares, and most of the wine is not exported, so we are fortunate to be able to get some of these to offer here in Colorado. These 3 bottlings are among 16 Jura wines that we currently offer! Big Box stores could NEVER! We love Jura for the distinctive elegant and complex wines with an ever present earthiness coupled with incredible value.

❇️ Anniversary Tasting Recap ❇️

Last Friday’s tasting was one for the books! We were thrilled to see such a great turnout of friends and supporters. Thank you all for joining us in this celebration 🥂

Each anniversary holds a special place in our hearts, a poignant reminder of life’s fragility and the importance of cherishing what we often take for granted—like our health. It’s easy to forget its significance until it begins to wane, and by then, it’s too late. Remembering that our vibrant, healthy bodies are not a permanent gift but rather a temporary blessing puts everything into perspective. Gratitude is the key to acknowledging that everything we hold dear—love, health, our business—is fleeting and precious.

Make the most of every experience, creating memories that will last a lifetime. These moments are what life is truly about, making every bit of the journey worthwhile.

While Denver Wine Merchant may not be here 100 years from now, the memories we’ve created together over the past four years are unforgettable. Your support means the world to us, and we can’t thank you enough.

As we mark another year, we also celebrate Sally’s journey. The average lifespan for someone with ALS is just 2-5 years from diagnosis, but Sally has defied the odds and continues to be the amazing wine nerd we all know and love. Here’s to many more tastings together!

🥂4 Year Anniversary🥂

We’re throwing an anniversary party this Friday at the shop to ring in 4 years of Denver Wine Merchant!

🍷We’ll be opening some special bottles to celebrate from 4-7pm, so stop by for an epic tasting.

It’s been an incredible experience to open our dream shop and we are so grateful we can share our passion for amazing wine with the world. It just occurred to me (Sally) that I was diagnosed with ALS in August of 2019 and exactly 1 year later in August 2020, we made our very first sale at Denver Wine Merchant. We moved from our apartment in NJ to Colorado mid pandemic to open our dream wine shop. Despite ALS and my physical limitations, I’ve had the best time of my life working alongside Steven in the little wine paradise we’ve created in this beautiful state.

You never know what life will throw at you, so don’t wait to do what you love! Follow your dreams and make them happen! Do not wait to live your best life: go on the trip, open the bottle, order dessert, take the risk, get out of your comfort zone.

You do not know what tomorrow will bring, but the most exciting thing about life is the unknown: that’s where anything you imagine can become your reality. ✨

Thank you for 4 badass years and we look forward to more! Now come enjoy some amazing wine!

🇨🇱🇦🇷 We had a blast pouring some of our favorite South American wines at Sabor Denver last week. We chose wines we have a connection to and love for their incredible quality and value.

🥂Alma 4 Blanc de Blancs ➡️ all Chardonnay in the Champagne method from Mendoza. Not a Champagne price at $24! Textured, creamy and fresh.

🥂Clos des Fous Dulcinea Chardonnay 2018 -> Malleco Valley DO - rich and luscious with a deep golden color - fans of older white Burgundy will love this for a lot less $$ at $29.

🍷Pedro Parra Trane 2021 -> all old vine Cinsault from a single spot in Itata, Pedro is making truly Chilean wine, not trying to make French or Californian wine and that’s why we love it. $35 and WORTH IT.

🍷Durigutti Malbec Finca Zarlenga 2020 -> one of 3 Malbecs made as a terroir project meant to show soil differences in wine, this sees only concrete aging and maintains a freshness over its deep color and dark fruit notes. Sally blind tasted it and thought it was Rhône valley Syrah. Somehow this is only $22 - try all 3 side by side!

🌋Festa dell’Etna ‘24 🌋

We had an event last week where we featured and celebrated the wines of Mount Etna, Sicily and it was a blast!

We fell in love with the wines from Etna when we visited the Sicily in 2017, and ever since, we have had an affinity for Carricante & Nerello Mascalese as well as every other indigenous grape variety grown on this active volcano 🌋

The wines are distinctive, compelling and still very affordable for a high quality wine and our Festa showcased this region unlike any event we’ve ever seen!

Thank you to everyone that attended and those that made the event possible!

✨We look forward to more events and sharing the wines we love✨

✨Summertime Wine✨

Try these 2 ancient white wines to bring something fresh to your life this summer!

🔆 Los Bermejos Diego (on left) is made from organically grown Diego grapes on the island on Lanzarote. This grape is called Vijiriega in Andalucia, where it was widely grown before Phylloxera spread there in the 1800’s. It’s known for maintaining acidity and is an ideal match for the low latitudes of the Canary Islands. The wine is medium bodied, salty, and a great seafood pairing.

🔆 Tiberio Pecorino (on right) is crafted by one of the world’s up and coming winemakers, Christiana Tiberio, in her native Abruzzo. Not to be confused with the cheese, this ancient vine is believed to have been named such as it grew near where sheep tended to graze. Today, they still graze, and the resulting wine has lots of texture with orchard fruits and a strong stoneyness minerality.

Whatever the mood, we always love to interrupt our regular Riesling and Chardonnay programming with some lesser-known wines. Try out some native grapes on your next visit in to the shop!

✨Should Burgundy be Decanted?✨

Short answer is: It depends ⚠️

When Sally (me) was a sommelier in NYC, I served Georg Riedel, owner and former CEO of the Austrian glassware company Riedel. He ordered a young 1er cru red Burgundy and was ✨shocked✨ I didn’t decant it. I’m always happy to decant a wine, but usually never decanted Burgundy without someone requesting it. Georg insisted all Burgundy should be decanted, and that really rattled me at the time because I usually didn’t decant them! It was a great learning experience.

The following sums up how to approach this subject:

✳️ Old Burgundy (25+ years) *never* should be decanted as the aromas will be fleeting and short lived, and decanting will allow any delicate aromas to immediately dissipate and you’re left with an old tired Burgundy.

✳️ Young red and white Burgundy often *benefits* when made by a producer who favors a reductive style - there will be flinty, sulfury notes which will dissipate to show more fruit notes with exposure to air. Ultimately, it’s a judgement call of whether the wine shows reduction and if the drinker prefers those flinty notes or would like the wine to be more open and exposed to oxygen to allow for more fruit aromas.

🌟Golden Goddess Wine🌟

👉White Bordeaux! Made from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and often oak aged, these are some of our favorite whites in the world and soo overlooked!

Some of the best are now made by top producers of dessert Sauternes including the Ygrec from Chateau d’Yquem for that really baller pizza and pasta night!

But don’t limit yourself to the dry wines - Sauternes is famously versatile as an aperitif or end of dinner wine and we just got this pristine case of 1996 Suduiraut straight from France! A full 750 for $85!

☀️Sippin on Sunshine☀️ with a dash of hopeful news 🧬

Two fresh new favorites for your sipping pleasure arrived in shop today from California, and they’re both $25!

Wavy Wines Sunshine 2023 (Orange)🔸
Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay and Muscat fermented on the skins and tastes like California sunshine.

If Moonrise Kingdom was a wine it would taste like this: Delightful, quirky and heartwarming.

Iruai Shasta-Cascade White 2023 🔹
30% Savagnin, 20% Grüner Veltliner, 20% Chenin Blanc, 20% Chardonnay and 10% Savagnin Rose Musqué

A blend of two states (California & Oregon) and is inspired by the wines of the French Alps. This tastes like it the movie Gentleman Broncos was a wine: an underrated masterpiece that you absolutely need in your life!

🧬 Stem Cell Update🧬 May is also ALS awareness month. This is the kind of awareness that needs to be shared:

It’s been about 3.5 months since I received fetal stem cell therapy at in Ukraine. I would like to report that I’m experiencing undeniably real improvement in my ALS symptoms! If I had to quantify my progress I would estimate I’ve had about a 5% improvement to my symptoms overall, which may not sound like much, but for ALS it’s UNHEARD OF! Nobody is supposed to get better from ALS, right? Well, I’m here to tell the world that’s not true: ALS isn’t 100% fatal. I’m here to change the old narrative that there’s no hope for this disease and there’s nothing you can do. There is hope, maybe not in this country, which is why it took me 4.5 years to find.

I’m not the only person with ALS that is seeing results from this treatment! I will continue to hope for continued improvement from this treatment and I want to thank everyone who believed in me and believes in the “impossible” of beating the s**t out of ALS!
