For hardcore outdoorsmen (like Marcus here!) camping is not just a Summer pastime, it's a way of life. Fall and Winter camping trips are great opportunities to test your metal against the elements. Forage for food when the ground is covered in leaves? DONE! Build a fire in a snowstorm? No problem. Identify the signs on early-onset hypothermia? I sure hope you can!!

All kidding aside, the color months are a great opportunity to spend some quality "nature time." Peninsulas has you covered with apparel for layering and looking good.

Why do we even HAVE weather people on TV when we can just rely on nature to predict the weather for us? Pine cones close and cows lie down when it's going to rain, the sky turns red at night if the next day's weather is going to be a "delight", and we all wait with bated breath in February to see if a giant rodent sees its shadow.

Add one more to the list...the Wooly Caterpillar. Legend has it, the width of the brown stripe tells us how harsh the winter is going to be. According to this little one's dye job, this winter is going to start harsh and end mild...or they could have a bad hair dresser, WHO KNOWS.

Either way, Peninsulas is fully stocked with fleeces, blankets, and all kinds of goodies to make your winter more comfortable.

HUGE Fanboy (and girl) moment in Cross Village! (fair warning, this is a LONG post.) About two weeks ago, this hip couple, let's call them "David and Lori", were wandering their way through Cross Village...just a couple of tourists...when Lori spotted our little Airstream in the backyard. They popped into the store to ask who owned the Airstream, one thing lead to another, introductions were made, and lo and behold it was David MOTHER F***ing Winick!!!

For those of you not in the know... if there was a Mount Olympus of vintage trailer experts, David would definitely be sitting on one of those fancy gold thrones. He is the designer behind the 75th Anniversary Airstream that Sherri and I have dragging around this country for the past 15 years, he literally wrote the book on vintage Airstreams, and he has designed and built trailers for the CEO of Airstream, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Metallica's James Hetfield.

After I stopped blubbering like an idiot, we spent some time at the trailer, talking and joking about Airstreams, Northern Michigan, polish food – you know, the usual stuff. We gave him a tour of a trailer and he even signed the inside door of the closet! I WILL NEVER WASH THAT DOOR AGAIN!

It was an amazing encounter – like a Ferrari aficionado getting to meet Enzo, a Mid-Century Modern purist meeting Frank Lloyd Wright, or a Star Wars cos player meeting Mark Hamill. They say you should never meet your heroes, but this one did not disappoint. Hope to see you down the road soon David, with the shiny side up.

It's always pretty on the Tunnel of Trees, but it is still pretty green. Flashes of yellow are starting to appear, and the feel of Fall is definitely in the air. Of all the senses, our sense of smell is the one that is most strongly tied to our memories. And the fall season is a virtual olfactory explosion! The smell of fresh donuts at the cider mill, burning leaves, pumpkin spice EVERYTHING! One of our favorites here at Peninsulas is the smell of balsam incense. Fill your home with this amazing scent that is certain to trigger memories of cabins and campfires.

People collect all sorts of things: stamps, comic books, butterflies, creepy clown paintings (it's true, that's a thing!!!) Today we celebrate the geologists or "rock hounds," those intrepid souls wandering the beaches with their heads down, eyes peeled, looking for that elusive agate, puddingstone, or Petoskey stone. Our little metal trays are the perfect landing spot for all your treasures . . . just try not to over do it . . . or do . . . who are we to judge?

We are just loony for loons here at Peninsulas!!! (okay, now that I have that out of my system...) Did you know that the Seney Wildlife Refuge in the Upper Peninsula is home to two of the oldest loons on the planet? They used to be a couple, but there has been some drama over the last year or so. Seriously, they could have their own show on Bravo with all the nonsense that's been going on with them!

These beautiful creatures get their name from how goofy (LOONY!?!?) they look walking, which is probably why they spend most of their time swimming and diving for food.

Today we celebrate the venerable honeybee – all 3.5 trillion of them!! (yep, even that one you claim tried to sting you, but in its defense, you WERE too close to his hive, KEVIN!). These busy little pollinators keep our whole food system buzzing (see what I did there!!!)...We celebrate them today and everyday with a whole HIVE FULL (sorry...i just can't stop!!) of great bee themed goodies. 906 Day! The day we celebrate the crown jewel of Michigan, The Upper Peninsula – that mythical and mysterious land above the Mackinac Bridge. The place where winters seems to last forever, the black flies carry off small children in the summer, and all their food is neatly wrapped in a toasty warm doughy container! Can you believe we only had to trade TOLEDO to make all that land part of Michigan!?!?! What is your favorite UP story or memory?

It's back to school time!!! Oh the joys of having to get up early again, homework, forgetting your locker combination, and the terrible school lunches... we remember it well.
