Mark West was founded in 1978 with one desire - to craft remarkable Pinot Noir that delivers exceptional quality at an affordable price. Their name, Mark West, is an ode to a region in the heart of Sonoma county, one of the world’s best places to grow Pinot Noir. It was here that they started their winery and passion for Pinot. And we, the imbibers, have certainly benefited over the years! Their goal of making affordable, delicious Pinot Noirs has been met— but they don’t rest on their laurels and continue to strive, year after year, to keep earning the kudos they have been justly given. And here we are, once again, featuring a Mark West Pinot Noir! Because it’s a great value-priced Pinot that will make the month and Thanksgiving even better.
The nose is classic Pinot Noir, loaded with bright red fruits like cherry and strawberry, with a touch of cherry cola and violets. The palate continues with the red fruits as cherry and raspberry take the lead in the flavor profile, bolstered by light acidity and soft tannins. A touch of earth, pastry and clove leads to a long, flavorful finish reiterating the main focus of red berries. Enjoy with Thanksgiving fare, pork, poultry, charcuterie, lamb, mushroom risotto, pastas with tomato-based sauces.

We will be tasting Dassai’s classic lineup from Japan, including DASSAI BEYOND. We will also be tasting the new DASSAI BLUE sakes made in NY. There will be 9 Sakes for this tasting. Cost: $40. Seatings at 4:30 & 6:45pm.

DRC La Tache 1969

Always special to have older DRC, but one never knows how good a 55 year old wine will be until the cork is popped.

Thankfully, this bottle was in good shape. The color was medium garnet with plenty of ruby as well.

The aromatics were the best part of this wine. Rose petals, sous bois, spice and earth augmented the red fruits.

On the palate, this was medium-bodied with melted tannins and medium-plus acidity. Strawberry, raspberry and cranberry notes mingled with the non-fruit flavors on a delicate frame. The florality, spice and earth persisted.

I don’t often think of La Tache as elegant, but this was exactly that. The passage of time has resulted in a refined, balanced and pleasing wine.
