It’s almost time for the annular solar eclipse, aka “Ring of Fire.” Come enjoy the view with us on October 14, 2023!

☀️ An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. The Moon’s disk does not fully cover the Sun and a ring of bright sunlight, or annulus, is seen. This “Ring of Fire” is visible around the Moon during the maximum phase of this type of eclipse.

🌈 Weather permitting, the eclipse will be visible from Padre Island starting at 10:26 am CDT and ending at 1:39 pm CDT, with the maximum eclipse of 90.26% occurring at 11:59 am CDT. Padre Island National Seashore is the last place in the US to see the maximum eclipse.

👓 Remember, it is never safe to look at the sun during an annular eclipse without special purpose solar filters. Our friends at Western National Parks Association have eclipse glasses and eclipse memorabilia available in the park store located inside the visitor center.

🔭 During the day of the annular solar eclipse, the park will offer several casual drop-in activities for you to experience the eclipse in different ways. These drop-in activities will be available at the Malaquite Visitor Center from 10 am to 2 pm. These activities include Build Your Own Solar Viewer, Listen to the Eclipse, Examine Sunspots, and Become an Eclipse Explorer.
