Surgeon General be damned, we’ll take our daily enjoyment any day!
Join us tonight for our Friday night tasting, 4-7pm. This week we’re tasting wines of Eastern Europe with a blaüfrankish blend from Slovakia and an orange rkatsiteli from the country of Georgia. We hope to see you there!

Perhaps the best thing about wine is that it encourages us to reflect that no matter what our situation, we have reasons to be grateful. Wine is a way to celebrate every day.

Among the many reasons we at Flowercup are grateful are you — our friends and neighbors who make it a daily joy to be wine merchants. We thank you all and wish you happy holidays!

GIFT IDEA #3: A Personalized Case

What better proof of your admiration than twelve wines selected to suit the recipient’s taste? If the recipient is a regular at our shop, we probably already know what to suggest. Otherwise, we’ll work within any guidelines you provide. You can order a single case or keep the cheer flowing with a monthly subscription. The price of each case is the total of the retail prices of the wines minus ten percent.

GIFT IDEA #2: Flowercup Tasting Box ($150–$170 for six bottles)

Our Friday night tastings, where we pop open the most notable new arrivals, are always crowded. But not everyone is free to attend. Now you can let a loved one participate vicariously with a Tasting Box. Every month we’ll pack up six bottles featured at recent tastings, along with informative notes about the wines. The boxes will include a mix of reds, whites, sparkling wines, and the occasional sake, vermouth, or hard cider. Feel free to ask for substitutions if a particular category is not welcome. You can order a single Tasting Box or a subscription. The price of each box is the total of the retail prices of the wines minus ten percent.

December 2024 Tasting Box ($157.23 before tax) includes a sparkling rosé from Touraine, France, made with gamay; an earthy, umami-packed Greek red made with an indigenous grape, mavrodaphne; a glowing falanghina (white wine) from Campania, Italy; a Tuscan red made with the rare grape vermentino nero; and a red and a white from a winemaker in Manchuela, Spain, who works to rescue obscure native grapes, like bobal, from extinction.

WINES AGED UNDER A VEIL OF YEAST
Aging for years under a layer of yeast is a secret history behind some of the most compelling wines. Connoisseurs treasure such wines for their lemony bite, spicy tang, and hazelnut richness. Dry sherries from Spain ($20.90–$36.20) are the best-known examples. Especially try the amontillado and oloroso styles if you like whisky but prefer lower alcohol. For centuries winemakers in Jura, France, have artfully used controlled oxidation under a veil of yeast to turn chardonnay and savagnin grapes into unctuous wines with exotic flavors of brine, toasted nuts, and curry, such as our eye-opening chardonnay from the village of L’Étoile ($38.80) or the legendary vin jaune ($116.10).

ADVENTURES BEYOND WINE
Surprise your guests with an uncommon sipper before or after dinner. A fortified mead ($28.00), with floral aromatics and accents of mint and cinnamon, can replace sweet vermouth in a cocktail or be sipped alone on the rocks. Our dry Umeshu (plum-infused) sake ($36.20) reminds us of a fine plum brandy. And who doesn’t like a great amaro? We have a growing collection of digestifs suffused with botanicals that impart bitter, sweet, tangy, and earthy flavors ($27.70–$68.50).

THE MAGIC OF BUBBLES

Start your holiday celebration with a Col Fondo Prosecco ($24.70) from Veneto, Italy, cloudy in the glass because it was bottled with the yeasts, which add complexity, longevity, and flavor. Or try an unusual sparkling rosé from Lorraine, France, made from gamay grapes and fragrant with the perfume of strawberries and wildflowers ($31.10). If you yearn for a sparkling wine made in the Champagne method but without a Champagne price, we suggest a Loire Valley crémant of chenin blanc spun into liquid gold ($40.00) by a Rumplestiltskin of the vineyard.

BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU IS HERE.
Beaujolais Nouveau comes out once a year, just after harvest time. The wine is bottled without aging. It’s as fresh as wine can be, offering the pure flavors of the current harvest, and is the perfect accompaniment for a rich, savory feast. Our favorite Beaujolais Nouveau ($22.10) is made with organically farmed grapes, wild-yeast fermentation, and minimal addition of sulfite preservative. Our allotment goes quickly every year.

Although we are operating on reduced winter hours, we continue to bring in new discoveries every week.

This Friday evening (Jan. 19), from 4:00 to 6:00, we’ll pour samples of a recent arrival especially suited to snowy weather. It’s a rich red made from sagrantino ($28.60), a grape native to Umbria, in central Italy, and rarely grown elsewhere. Sagrantino is one of the most tannic varietals. If you like bitter dark chocolate and espresso—and especially espresso beans covered in bitter dark chocolate—here is your wine. This bottling is a youthful expression of the grape, dry, smooth, and sophisticated, with flavors of dried cherries and cayenne pepper.

We hope to see you there!
