Elena Walch is a leading estate in Alto Adige Italy.
An architect by trade, Elena Walch married into one of the oldest and most significant wine families of the region and brought new, modern concepts to the traditional establishment. The philosophy of the estate is dedicated to its terroir – the idea that wines must be the individual expression of their soil, climate and cultivation in the vineyard – and that this must be maintained according to principles of sustainability and passed on to the next generation. The firm belief that the quality of wine is created in the vineyard requires uncompromising work, taking into account the individuality of each vineyard. With 90 hectares in cultivation, including the two top vineyards VIGNA Castel Ringberg in Caldaro und VIGNA Kastelaz in Tramin, Elena Walch belongs to the most important protagonists of Alto Adige winemaking.

This was my first time trying their Gewurztraminer, which is a 2022.
The nose displayed peaches, spices, honeysuckle, flowers & musk. Quite perfumy & rich.
The palate was quite rich with spices, honeysuckle, plenty of minerality & tropical fruits in a bigger body with medium acidity & a longer finish. This had layers of flavor & complexity & got even better with air. This was a truly exceptional wine, even though it is quite young. This is definitely worth seeking out & is available in our store for $59.99

A week & a half ago, I brought a 2008 & 2017 Clos Ste. Hune to the wine group I'm in as the theme was Alsace. Clos Ste. Hune is a vineyard owned for 200 years by the Trimbach family. It is a small vineyard
at just over 1.67 ha in the heart of Grand Cru Rosacker, in Hunawihr, yielding about 9000 bottles. It is considered to be the benchmark for all dry Riesling produced in the world. The wine has the ability to age for decades, & has acidity & bergamont lemon for days. After a few years in the bottle, wonderful minerals emerge. It's an extremely complex wine with a finish that goes on forever.

Here are some brief notes. The 08 was opened first & unfortunately had a subtle touch of tca. Not enough to kill the wine, but just enough to dumb down the complexity. Sad as the one I had in 2020 was young, yet spectacular. Also, my last bottle.

The 2017 had notes of petrol, lemon, white peach, high minerality & ripe acidity with a touch of cream in a long finish. This was a bit tight & quite young, but extremely delicious. This will be thrilling with some bottle age.

New Arrival!
Mousse hommage a Cuisles

The Mousse family has been growing grapes since 1750 and producing champagne since 1923. This is a love letter to Cuisles, celebrating the Moussé family's Champagne making centennial in the Vallee de la Marne. 100% Pinot Meunier and 24 months on the lees.
I haven't tasted this yet, but I like this house quite a bit, so it's a no brainer in my opinion.

I just love drinking good Bordeaux in vintages that are so so. This is where the great producers truly shine. So I popped a 2007 Chateau Palmer. And boy, did this wine shine. It was paired with a Filet Mignon wrapped in bacon over silky mashed potatoes & smothered in a blue cheese sauce with a side of asparagus. Here are a few notes on the wine. Black & red fruits, hints of sous bois, some spice, oak, cigar to***co & a touch of smoke in a full body with velvety tannins & medium acidity. This is a very complex wine that is in the sweet spot as the fruit is still fresh, with some secondary characteristics coming through on the palate. This was a complete joy to drink & was the perfect wine for the food. If you're interested in purchasing a few of these, there are still some left in our private cellar.

Cellar Selection, & New Arrival!

Andrew Will 2019 Sorella Champoux Vineyard Horse Heaven Hills, Washington.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot
Champoux (pronounced “shampoo”) Vineyard is set back five miles from the Columbia River in the Horse Heaven Hills.
The 175-acre vineyard was first planted in 1972, & Block 1, the oldest section, provides the Cabernet Sauvignon for Andrew Will’s Sorella. Paul Champoux, for whom the vineyard is named, retired in 2014 as an owner and vineyard manager. Dan Nickolaus replaces him as vineyard manager. The vineyard is owned and run by a consortium of partners, which includes Andrew Will. Other partners include Quilceda Creek, Woodward Canyon, and Powers.
The soil is sandy loamy (Warden-Schano-Esquatzel).
Tannins are noteworthy in the wines from this vineyard.
The area is differentiated from other parts of Washington by the wind from the Columbia River Gorge, which never seems to stop.

I am a big fan of this winery, but I haven't tried the Sorella before. Their wines are very ageworthy & only get better, in my opinion, so I'm really excited to crack one & put a few away in the cellar for a rainy day. This scored very well across the board from critics, with the lowest score being 95 & the highest at 99.

You probably wouldn't expect to find antifreeze & magnums of Barolo in the same store. But in the words of the great John Dalton. "Never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. And that's exactly what we do here. We bring the unexpected to levels not seen since Spinal Tap took their amps to 11. We rock, & we rock it hard. 😂😂

Anyways, Paolo Scavino has been making wine since about 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, & are currently on the 4th generation run by daughters Enrica & Elisa. Their work is inspired by the love and respect they have for their territory, & they pursue purity of expression, complexity, & elegance for their wines from the three local grapes Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo.

These values and culture have been carried on and never changed.
This is their entry level Barolo & it comes from the 7 best plots of cru vineyards. It's aged for 10 months in neutral French oak & 12 months in large casks, then 1 year of stainless steel & 10 months of bottle age before being released. This is a great winery & a must-have in your cellar.

Vincent Girardin 2018 Grésigny 1er cru Rully

Vincent started in the business at age 19 after inheriting 2ha of vines from his parents. He quickly built up a thriving business, acquiring some of the best plots in Burgundy along the way. He also started a negociant business as well to satisfy his customers' demands, working with some teriffic growers who shared his passion & and the same high quality standards. He is now retired, and his partner carries on the tradition that started in 1980.
This Rully is from the Coté Chalonnaise. The vines average 45 years in age & the wine sees 15 months in oak barrels without battonage. The result is a beautiful wine with citrus notes & fresh fruit, such as apples & pears with white flowers. It is richer wine with medium acidity & a long delicious finish.
At $37.99, this is a big bargain.

My wife said I should post this, so here it is. I met a few folks at a recent open house I attended, & apparently my store is well known to wine aficionados all over the place. After a bit of mingling, I met Phil, the writer & photographer for the Akron Beacon Journal, & he said he wanted to talk to me about my store. Well, here we are. I'm not one to talk about myself, but my wife insisted I share this, so here's the article. At the bottom, is a link if you're a subscriber.

No ordinary gas station: This Cleveland shop has $10,000 bottles of wine | Phil Your Glass
Phil Masturzo
Akron Beacon Journal

Chris Forest, owner of Alcohol by Volume, talks about his wine shop hidden inside a former Gulf gas station at the corner of Clifton and W. 116th in Cleveland.
Gas stations with convenience stores are seemingly everywhere, and they are all pretty much the same.

Unless, of course, you happen to be driving around the Edgewater neighborhood of Cleveland.

On the corner of W. 116th Street and Clifton Boulevard, about 3 miles west of the West Side Market, is where you will find a brick building with two gas pumps out front. Pretty ordinary-looking, if you ask me.

Google Maps lists this spot as an EZ Mart. A couple of months ago, it was branded as a Gulf Station, but now the sign out front simply reads "$2.89" and "Alcohol by Volume" in smaller letters underneath.

As expected, the first thing I spotted inside was a stack of windshield washer fluid jugs. However, as I looked left, I spotted a stack of Paolo Scalvino Rosso wine bottles from Italy.

Scalvino is one of the top Barolo producers in Italy’s Piedmont region. This is definitely not your typical gas station wine.

Then I passed a hand-crafted cigar humidor. No Swisher Sweets in there.

A few more steps, and my heart was pounding. I couldn't believe my eyes. I had walked into a wine lover's mecca.

The cabernet display at the room’s entrance features bottles of Ridge, Chateau Montelena, Heitz, Silver Oak and Grgich Hills. The sign above reads, “Tastes like a million bucks and costs a lot less."

Alcohol by Volume owner Chris Forest likes to keep the wine pairings fun at his wine shop hidden inside a former Gulf gas station in Cleveland. He paired this bag of Cool Ranch Doritos with a $2,299 bottle of Krug Champaign.
That’s when owner Chris Forest came up and told me his parents bought the former Lyden Oil Co. truenorth store in 1995 when he was 17 years old.

They eventually sold wine. “It was mainly Yellowtail, Barefoot, Woodbridge and Sutter Home,” Forest said. Starting out, he admitted to sipping on $10 bottles of “el cheepo wines.”

He convinced his father to add on a small room in 2010 to make the outside more aesthetically pleasing and symmetrical.

Fast-forward to 2024, and this space is now filled with the who’s who of wine labels.

“I’ve been very fortunate to get some of the most highly sought-after wines on the planet in here,” said Forest as he opened the door to a temperature-controlled wine refrigerator.

There were many rare bottles of Chateau Palmer from Bordeaux next to a $3,328 bottle of Krug Clos d'Ambonnay Blanc de Noirs Brut Champagne from France.

“I don’t think you will find this anywhere in the state,” he added. "Krug is one of his favorite Champagnes. I buy as much as I can humanly afford."

"Fill 'er up" takes on a whole new meaning in this room. There is an Italian section that features high-end bottles from all over the boot, including treasures from Barolo, Brunello, and Sicily’s Mt. Etna. There was also a separate section for wines from New Zealand, Washington state, Oregon, Argentina and even Austria.

“I’m a big riesling fan. If we had more space I’d have more. It’s the most versatile grape on the planet,” Forest said.

Wine lovers will also appreciate a display of carefully curated under-$20 value wines from all over the world. One of Forest’s favorites on the rack is a bottle of Luca cabernet from Argentina.

Just when I thought I'd seen it all in this small-but-mighty wine room, Forest unveiled the pièce de résistance. "I get the largest allocation of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in the state," he said, referring to what is considered the Holy Grail of French Burgundy. "Here I am in a gas station selling candy and Ho Hos, and then I’ve got $10,000 bottles of wine going out the door.”

After touring the wine-lover's Xanadu, Forest took me to the “other” side of the store. He was quick to add that he's "not running a full-fledged wine shop. This is a small part of our business.”

In addition to helping a customer find a special occasion wine, he'll also help them with the rare flat tire or oil check. The store does sell the usual ci******es, candy and snacks, but this "other" side of the store is just as eclectic as the wine side.

Sure, there are the usual bags of Combos, beef jerky and granola bars. But there are also over 50 different bottles of sake.

“I do have people who come to Cleveland on business that stop here to buy sake,” Forest said.

One is a $90 bottle of Kanbara Ancient Treasure that Forest said looks like a cheap bottle of malt liquor.

There’s even a small section of craft beer, featuring lots of German and Belgian favorites, as well as a small selection of mead. Now I know why he named the place Alcohol by Volume.

Familiar grocery store wines are stacked on this side of the store, but even these bottles are an upgrade from what you might expect to find in your average gas station convenience aisle.

Don’t overlook the cooler − there are treasures everywhere. On the same shelf that holds bottles of Sutter Home and Yellow Tail, you can also find a $42 bottle of Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine from the iconic Schramsberg Winery in Napa, California.

Suddenly, my mind switched from wine columnist to wine enthusiast as I spotted a bottle for my own cellar. This is the only place I know of where you can find a trophy wine stacked next to a bottle of Barefoot moscato.

That's where I spotted a $42 Sicilian sparkling wine from Benanti. I have never had a wine made from grapes grown on the side of an active volcano, but I sure am excited to try.

Bernard Baudry started his estate in 1975 with 2 ha of vines after being a vine-tending consultant at the Tours laboratory. The domaine now has 32 hectares of vineyards spread across the AOC Chinon, in Cravant les Coteaux and Chinon. His son Matthieu joined him in 2000.
The grapes grown are primarily Cabernet Franc (90%) plus a small production of Chenin Blanc (about 10%), & they have been practicing organic farming since 2006. We are huge fans of his wine & currently have 3 available. The Les Greźeaux, Les Croix Boissée & Le clos Guillot. These are all stellar examples of Chinon Cabernet Franc & very price friendly as well in my opinion. These are a must try if you haven't tasted his wines before.
