Update: Surveillance video shows RIT student at gas station night he went missing

Gas Station Surveillance Crucial in Search for Missing RIT Student, Matthew Grant

Rochester, December 4, 2023 — In the ongoing effort to find 22-year-old Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) student Matthew Grant, gas station surveillance footage has emerged as a pivotal element in the investigation. Grant, a co-captain of RIT's wrestling team, has been missing since the night of November 20, 2023.

Leaving his off-campus home in Henrietta around 10 p.m., Grant informed his roommates that he was meeting a friend but instead headed east, sparking concern and prompting a widespread search.

On Monday, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office confirmed the receipt of surveillance footage from a gas station situated between exits 41 and 39. The footage provides crucial insights into Grant's movements on the night of his disappearance, showing him alone and seemingly not in danger, according to deputies.

The focus of the investigation shifted to this key piece of evidence, shedding light on the timeline and circumstances surrounding Grant's disappearance. Law enforcement continues to meticulously analyze the gas station footage, hoping to glean further information that may lead to his whereabouts.

Grant's vehicle, a dark gray 2014 Jeep Cherokee with Michigan license plate ESR-8141, was last tracked to Exit 36 on the New York State Thruway, just north of Syracuse. The investigation faces uncertainties regarding the subsequent direction of travel on Interstate 81, underscoring the importance of every piece of available information.

"Investigators remain dedicated to locating 22-year-old Matthew Grant, last seen on 11/20/23 at approximately 10 PM. The gas station surveillance footage has become a focal point in our efforts, and we urge the public to share any relevant information by calling 911," emphasized law enforcement officials.

The community, galvanized by the search effort, continues to support the investigation, rallying together in collective hope for Matthew's safe return. Despite the challenges, Matthew Grant's father, Mark, spoke to News 8 in Rochester about his determination to find his son.

"In all honesty, I don’t know how I can go home again until I know where he’s at and what has happened. So, I plan on hanging around the Syracuse area for a while until we can figure this out," Mark expressed, adding, "I’m as broken as… as a person can be, but I refuse to quit."

As the investigation unfolds, the role of the gas station surveillance could prove pivotal, offering a glimpse into the critical moments surrounding Matthew Grant's disappearance and providing a glimmer of hope for his safe return.
