Philosophy
Akebulan's logo is composed of two Adinkra symbols. Historically, Adinkra symbols are part of a rich tradition. They were developed by the Asante people of West Africa and can be traced back to the 17th century and beyond. In Akebulan's logo there are two Adinkra symbols: Nkyinkyim and Wawa Aba. The Nkyinkyim (pronunciation:"n-chin-chim") means "twisting". It is a symbol of toughness, adaptability, selfless devotion to service and an ability to withstand hardships and difficulties. The Wawa Aba is a symbol of hardiness, toughness and perseverance. This symbol means the seed of the wawa tree which is an extremely hard seed. In Akan culture, it is a symbol of someone who is strong and tough. It inspires the individual to persevere through hardship. We chose these two symbols because they best reflect the philosophical values of Akebulan. Capoeira is a twisting, flowing, and adaptable art that requires perseverance and self-sacrifice to master. This martial art has always uplifted and empowered the community. Remarkably, it still does. As students of Capoeira and
members of Akebulan, we do our best to uphold these virtues. We practice the highest traditions of Capoeira (both Angola and Regional), without neglecting Capoeira's martial side. We do our best to make sure our Capoeristas are well-rounded in the art by emphasizing the music, the culture, the history, the game, and also the self-defense aspect, should the need arise.
Training
After seeing Capoeira there is usually one of two responses, "WOW! I gotta learn that!" or "WOW! I wish I could learn that, but I could never pull off those moves."BOLOGNA!!!! We have students from ages 11 to 60; various fitness levels; diverse athletic ability; and different body types and sizes. Granted you won't be pulling off some of Capoeira's more acrobatic moves your first class but I promise you if you make the commitment to come at least twice a week, before long, you'll be doing things you would have never dreamed possible! Regardless of your fitness goals Capoeira is one of, if not, the most economical way to achieve those goals. Capoeira targets flexibility, strength, endurance, speed, agility, and balance. As it targets each of these, it strengthens each one. Lifting weights just builds strength, running just builds endurance, yoga focuses on flexibility, and aerobic classes and other martial arts styles tend to neglect one or more of these six areas of fitness! Our workouts ensure that your entire body will be getting all of its fitness needs met! You might think of Capoeira as the ultimate workout of the martial arts world.
You are more than welcome to come and visit one of our training sessions!
