It's almost New Year's Eve, so let's talk about a fantastic sparkling wine cocktail: the Chambord Kir Royale.

First off: Chambord is a French liqueur made from XO cognac, red and black raspberries, Madagascar vanilla, Moroccan citrus peel, and honey. It's goddamn delicious on its own, but becomes something magical when splashed in some Champagne.

Get yourself an affordable bottle of bubbly (not the $7 bottle... splurge a little) and a bottle of Chambord ($36). Pour 4oz of sparkling wine into your glass plus 1oz Chambord. Feeling extra fancy? Drop a couple of fresh raspberries in there, or make a curly orange peel garnish. SO GOOD. Thank us later.

New Year's Eve: the holiday in which NOBODY pre-buys their drinks. It's our busiest day of the year, by far, so with that in mind let's talk about 3 kinds of bubbly.

CHAMPAGNE is a very specific term used for sparkling wines made in Champagne, France. If it's not from that particular region, it can't be called Champagne*. Everything else is just a sparkling wine. Champagnes are fermented twice, once in a tank and then again in the bottle, which makes them VERY bubbly. They're typically very dry.

ASTI SPUMANTE (or just ASTI) is a very specific term used for sparkling wines made around the Asti region of Italy. They use the Moscato grape, which makes them much sweeter than other sparkling wines, and they're only fermented once in the tank so they've got a smoother carbonation, almost lightly fizzy.

PROSECCO is a specific term for a sparkling wine made in a large region of Italy near the town of Prosecco. They're double fermented also, but in two different tanks, not in the bottle. Very fizzy, bubbly, and typically very dry.

Today's gift set of the day is a classic: Bailey's! It's been around since the 1970's and contains Irish Whiskey, cream, and cocoa. The original recipe was born from a couple dudes sitting around trying to figure out how to make use of alcohol from a failing local distillery and surplus cream from a neighbor's farm, and the first drafts actually contained Nesquik! Ah, the Irish.

Today's gift set of the day is... not a gift set! It's a quick post to highlight our three nogs of the season. Ok, follow me here: if there are EGG nogs, it stands to reason there must be different kinds of nogs. Has anyone ever seen an alternate nog?

I'm sure that the marketing people behind Disaronno Velvet weren't thinking about Chicago when they branded all their online ads with "DIS is smooth", and "DIS is silky", etc. but I'm certainly glad they did. Dis stuff is a blend of cream, vanilla, and Disaronno's distinct almond liquor flavor. It's a great holiday gift dat's outside the mainstream.
