Our beloved Samuel Ornelas was honored with this piece about his life and his love for his patrons. He refused to change the bar despite the changes in the neighborhood: trendy restaurants, luxury apartments and other bars.

“The evening that Samuel Ornelas died, music from the old jukebox in his cantina stopped playing and the vintage bar stools stood empty. On Jan. 28, for the first time in nearly 50 years, El Trebol Liquors, the oldest dive bar in Pilsen, closed its doors to its faithful patrons to pay their respects to Sammy, as most people called him.

Sammy was 86, and had spent most of his time at the family business that he helped establish and that he became sole proprietor of in the last decade.

He was resilient, much like the other Mexican immigrants who started to build a life in the area & shaped its Mexican culture.

We remember and honor our patriarch, Samuel Ornelas at the bar he called home for several decades. Trébol will closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Sammy was a pioneer immigrant entrepreneur in the Pilsen neighborhood. He lived to his 86 years surrounded by love and teaching his children the art of resiliency and love.
He was only 16 when he immigrated from Jalisco, Mexico. In the late 50’s he began working at El Trebol Liquors & Bar with his family, now the oldest cantina in the Pilsen neighborhood- to then become the co-owner and then sole proprietor of the family business that has been a staple of the Mexican immigrant neighborhood in Chicago.

Sammy had great respect and appreciation for the loyal patrons that visited the bar and those who continue to have a beer or two enjoying the traditional Mexican music that he loved.

It is with deep sorrow that we inform the community of the loss of Samuel Ornelas, a pioneer immigrant entrepreneur in the Pilsen neighborhood. Sammy lived to his 86 years surrounded by love and teaching his children the art of resiliency and hard work. On Saturday night, Sammy took his last breath surrounded by that same love of his family.
He was only 16 when he immigrated from Jalisco, Mexico. In the late 50’s he began working at El Trebol Liquors & Bar, now the oldest cantina in the Pilsen neighborhood- to then become the co-owner and then sole proprietor of the family business that has been a staple of the Mexican immigrant neighborhood in Chicago.
Sammy had great respect and appreciation for the loyal patrons that visited the bar and those who continue to have a beer or two enjoying the traditional Mexican music that he loved.
He will be remembered with immense love by his wife, his children and grandchildren.
Though we are heartbroken, we thank God for the life that our beloved Sammy had. His memory will live in our hearts and amongst us
