Everyone has heard of Moscato d'Asti, the sweet, bubbly white wine from Italy's Piedmont region, however I'd like to shed some light on another great, affordable wine from the same area: Barbera d'Asti! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ˜‹

What do these wines have in common? Not much, besides the land they share. Barbera is a light to medium bodied plush red wine, with light tannins and high acidity. What that all means essentially is that it is very fruity, making your mouth water, without that drying sensation found in bolder red wines like Cabernets or Syrah.

Because the Nebbiolo grape is highly regarded by Piedmont growers for exportability and ageability, Barbera is grown in the valleys and lowlands, therefore being designated as a 'drink now' table wine.

Well, you might think that would mean that Barberas is nothing more than a cheap drink, right?

Well, you'd be completely mistaken! I like to say, Barbera offers great value and Wine Enthusiast would agree. They awarded Vietti's Barbera d'Asti Trevie #8 on their yearly 'Best Wines Under $20' list in 2023. Vietti's wine also received 93 points by the same magazine and 94 points by the Tasting Panel.

On the palate, you'll experience wild sour cherry๐Ÿ’ and vanilla notes, a sliver of minerality, and subtle oak๐Ÿชต. It's bright and vibrant, pairing extremely well with roasted duck๐Ÿฆ†or pork๐Ÿ–, as well as leaner meats, white fish๐ŸŸ, or even Buffalo's favorite, blue cheese ๐Ÿง€. Try to avoid pastas with tomato sauce as the high acidity of the tomatoes will clash with the high acidity of the wine, potentially souring the entire experience.

If you want to see just how much terrain and climate can influence a wine, you can buy a Barbera d'Alba to compare and contrast the two! The aforementioned growing regions are only 20 miles apart, and both still in Piedmont, but vary significantly in structure, flavor, and mouthfeel.

Also, the artwork on Vietti's bottles is an added bonus! They've even garnered the winery an exhibition at MOMA in 1996!

This carries a 94 Score by both James Suckling and Wine Spectator and beautifully encapsulates the cool-climate terroir of Eola-Amity Hills, home of Willamette Valley's most prestigious vineyards. ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿชจโ›ฐ๏ธ

The Drouhin family are venerable winemakers from Burgundy, France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท dating back to 1880. They expanded abroad to the Dundee Hills of Oregon in 1987, terroir with similarities to those back overseas. In 2013, the Drouhin's purchased Roserock vineyard in Eola-Amity Hills.

Roserock vineyard is laden with ancient volcanic soil, steep hills, and with a unique cooling effect from the Van Duzer coridor, which culminates in a winemaker's dream.

Roserock Pinot Noir is Drouhin's cuvee selection, where only the finest grapes are picked within the estate's 35 blocks, which lends to a very ageworthy wine with Burgundian elements. It's delicate and floral, an antithesis to many Willamette Valley wines which tend to be more structured and powerful.

The 2023 vintage delights with tart cherry and vibrant orange-cranberry notes, juxtaposed by earthy undertones. Near the end of your sip, you'll taste baking spices and delicate floral notes. ๐Ÿ’๐ŸŠ๐ŸŒธ

There's not enough that can be said about this wine that will do it justice. It's a bottle that pays homage to the land of Oregon as much as it takes you on a personal voyage through the vines of Roserock. It's one of those 'experience' wines that, if you can have once in your life, you'll remember it indefinitely.

It's that time of year when the grills/smokers are fired up and that charcoal intensity is in the air. The problem you might be contemplating is what wine goes well with barbecued food? ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿฅฉ

It's probably not a varietal you are familiar with, but my personal recommendation is Monastrell. Monastrell might be better known as Mourvedre in French, but this profound grape is very popular in Spain's Alicante region. It's definitely not a beginner's wine, nor one that most would sip on its own, due to its pugnacious, in-your- face qualities. ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡

Monastrell, in a way, has many similarities to Old Vine Zinfandels with their deep, pungent dark fruits and to Syrah, with its peppered smokiness. If you take the best part of those two grapes, you get a Monastrell. Of course, that is not scientifically accurate, but it's the best way to describe this esoteric varietal.

Due to the grape's high-tannins and medium to full-body, it pairs fantastic with smoked salmon, roasted vegetables, a hearty stew, or barbecued meats. The wine offers rich earthiness, which beautifully juxtaposes the pungent plum, blackberry, and black cherry notes. Pairing it with some grilled foods is a great way to extricate the wine's fruits while enhancing the meal on the table. Due to the smokiness of a grilled or barbecued dish, you really wouldn't want to pair the meal with a light-bodied white or red like Pinot Grigio or Pinot Noir, or else you'll probably just taste citric acidity, which might sour your dinner. A medium-bodied red like a Cabernet would most likely be drowned out as well.ย 

However, Monastrell is a wine that truly can not be outflavored easily; it truly holds its own, and this is the best time of year to try it out!

Have you ever tried Solera-barreled bourbon? The Spanish ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ technique popularized for crafting Sherry๐Ÿท, has been adopted by Chattanooga Whiskey to produce some of the tastiest bourbons of the last few years! ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿฅƒ

Although, the idiosyncrasies don't even start there! Before even beginning distillation, Chattanooga uses three special malts for their whiskey,which provide notes akin to a confectioners shop: slow-toasted rye malt, roasted caramel malt, and honey malt. Chattanooga ages their whiskeys for at least 2 years in virgin oak casks. However, while the first half of theseย  barrels are charred to a #4 specification, the other half are slow-toasted first, which imparts a beautiful honey-toast๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿž profile to the whiskey, followed by a mellower #3 char.

Following the initial aging process, the distillers begin filling up the newest whiskey into a 4,000-gallon charred oak 'Solera' barrel, which the team adapts to their needs.

Never heard of the Solera method? In essence, it's a tiered system of barrels where older liquid is continuously blended with younger liquid as they age in conjunction with one another. It helps to create a consistently complex flavor profile, and although it requires a lot of direct attention to achieve, it's definitely worth it!

Chattanooga's 'magnificent vessel,' as they refer to their 4,000 gallon monstrosity, never runs empty. The barrel is continuously topped off with 8-12 barrels of fresh juice after each small batch bottling, resulting in a fruit-forward, complex flavor profile, similar to the same effect a fine sherry can produce.

If you want to drink a sub-$50 bottle that's an unrivaled experience to anything else in the whiskey aisle, look to Chattanooga. Currently , e supply their standard four grain 91-proof bourbon, unfiltered111-proof single batch bourbon, and their scrumptious 99-proof rye, which all strike a similar chord, but offer their own unique rifts.
