Located in the French village of Saze, winemaker Christophe Coste runs his family owned-winery with meticulous attention to detail. The terroir here is exceptional with the predominant feature being the ‘gallet’ stones more famously found in neighboring Chateauneuf du Pape. The 2017 vintage that we will be pouring is soft and silky, with a southern character that merely hints at the savoriness that is the calling card of this grape.

Antonio Berritta and his family farm 12 hectares on the volcanic slopes of the valley of Oddoene, near the eastern Sardinian coast. 75% percent of this small farm is planted with Cannonau vines, yielding 20,000 bottles of ‘Nostranu’ in a good vintage. A medium-bodied red that perhaps feels lighter than it is, Antonio’s Nostranu is exceptionally aromatic, and precisely the kind of wine to root you squarely in the present, even when the past and future seem more popular subjects.

Our third red is a real treat to pour: Elian Daros’s 2016 ‘Clos Baquey’ from Bordeaux satellite region, Cotes du Marmandais. Cab franc, Abouriou, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are all vinified separately and then blended to yield this exceedingly elegant and smooth wine whose profile lies well outside the frame of traditional Bordeaux reds.

We’ll also be pouring our new favorite sparkling rosé, Remy Mabileau’s “Hypnotic” Loire blend of Pineau D’aunis, Grolleau, and Cab Franc. Fresh, easy, berry-laden fun; don’t wait for New Year’s Eve to discover this excellent value!

Speaking of excellent values, we’d be remiss not to pour some ‘Pourquoi Pas?’ from Chateau de Valflaunes. One of the highlights of our Thanksgiving case special, this rich, complex, Languedoc white is what I’ll be opening once the dust has settled and the feet are up on December 24th.

It’s a particularly sparkling edition of our Saturday tasting, as we shine a spotlight on rising native Saumur star (and occasional NC denizen) Etienne Bodet. He and his wife Kim Herold have added a third wine to their excellent zero-dosage Crémant de Loire lineup: the 100% Chenin Blanc “Les Greffiers”. We’ll be welcoming that to our shelves, alongside the return of their “Physis” and rosé “Aerlinn” bottlings. AND, as a special holiday treat, we’ll be pouring his 2020 Clos Durandiere rouge (blanc is arriving this spring!). A tiny 3 acre site, Clos Durandiere is home to Cabernet Franc vines planted on some of the only hard Jurassic limestone found in the Saumur appellation that otherwise lies almost entirely on the soft, Cretaceous, Chenin-friendly limestone known as tuffeau. Etienne farms organically and biodynamically and is pursuing certification; not surprisingly, the resulting wines are also worth pursuing. Join me and Drew Anderson from Advintage as we taste these wines and learn more about Etienne and Kim’s work. Of course, I’ll be ready to assist with any other holiday gift/party/“treat yourself” needs.

See you Saturday from 12-4!

That’s right! This December chill had us thinking of a red Primitivo grapes pressed gently at a low temperature and promptly separated from the skins to yield a soft, versatile white wine with hints of mandarin citrus. Our mind also wandered to Rioja Alavesa, from some of Artuke’s young-vine red that’s an ideal party pleaser, as well as over to Chateau de la Font du Loup in the southern Rhône. Regarded for their exceptional Chateauneuf-du-Papes, they bring the same level of attention to their Côtes du Rhône-level wines, so we’re excited to pour their 2021 rouge, a lighter vintage from a region known for bigger, jammy reds. Last but not least, we welcome back a Bourgogne Passetoutgrain from from Georges Joillot. The “Cerasuolo di Vittoria of Burgundy” as I call it, this traditional blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir is precisely the fun, fruit-filled-yet-mellow glass you’d expect from combining these two food-friendly varieties. Plenty to warm you up this weekend, we look forward to seeing you this Saturday from 12-3!

* but we did get only two each of these “rare and allocated” showstoppers. Moulin Touchais Chenin Blanc with almost three decades of off-dry wisdom, Kabinett from arguably the finest Riesling estate in the world, and the exceeding elusive Rioja blanco “field blend” from Remelluri. Any of these would make for a special occasion indeed, whether this week, or years from now✨

It’s showtime, y’all! I know we always say that during this time of year, but it’s true! We’re basically a year-round “Thanksgiving wine” shop, so forgive us for getting excited at the chance to celebrate our wares when the big day rolls around. We’ve of course got Cru Beaujolais on tap, plus my “G’s Thanksgiving Pick”: Domaine Gauby rouge, textbook Beaujolais blanc from Domaine Vissoux, Austrian rosé, “Baby Barolo” from Azelia, magnificent cider from Normandy, a dessert tipple from the Languedoc...and more! We can’t wait to share all these goodies with you this Saturday from 12-4!

This 2021 Eric Bordelet is a gem from a fabulous producer. This Normandy cider is sure to please and is a STEAL compared to the online retailing prices.

Java☕️? Sure sometimes.
Domaine Chiroulet’s 2022 Java🍷…?

YES🤩😋!!!!!! From the southwest of France comes this easy-drinking red. This wine is a crowdpleasing blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah grapes from the Fezas family, winemakers for 150 years. We get the privilege to carry this wine so come on in and give it a try!

Round two in the run-up to Thanksgiving takes us to Corsica, where the husband and wife team, Mathieu and Julie Marfisi run their eponymous estate in Patrimonio. Their wines are rugged yet elegant, with an energy and edge befitting an island intensely proud of its identity. Old vines of Niellucciu growing in fine limestone soil a few hundred yards from the Mediterranean yield a red wine of power and structure, but plenty of room for cuisine. We’ve been waiting months to pour this!

Over in Tuscany the Caprili estate produces excellent Brunello di Montalcino, and they bring the same level of attention to their ‘Ilex’ Toscano rosso, a plump, versatile Sangiovese in the best Italian table wine tradition. Next is Beaujolais, where we find Pascal Au Franc’s thoroughly agreeable Pinot Gris. Lively acidity, medium weight, and a ripeness ready to rumble with a wide spectrum of flavors. Then it’s over to Domaine 4 Vents in Crozes-Hermitage for their 100% Organic, 100% Roussanne blanc. The variety displays its usual bright floral aromas, stone fruits and nutty notes, with a pleasing unctuousness. Low alcohol (12.5%) and balanced acidity delivers a fresh and lively finish.

Come join Grant this Saturday to taste the selection!

It’s a unique challenge to select wines for the holiday season, identifying bottles that fit pleasure, refreshment, sustainability, and value. But it’s a challenge we relish to face here at DB Sutton. So, we are kicking off the season with a quartet of wines that are perfect for the gatherings on your calendar.

Fabien Trosset’s Rousette de Savoie and the “Abelos” Frascati DOCG from De Sanctis in Lazio are quite different, as you might expect from their respective Alpine and Mediterranean terroirs. However, they both possess a ripeness, weight, and easiness that make them excellent pairings with both your traditional expansive thanksgiving spread, as well as knocking about as glass or two catching up with relatives while semi-frantically looking for the gravy boat (check behind the plates!).

Similarly, Colle Della Murgia’s Puglian red blend and the Sancerre rouge from Hippolyte Reverdy both manage to make for a pleasing pre-meal sip while also leaving plenty of room for all the food on your plate. A blend of September-harvested Primitivo and Aglianico harvested a month later, Colle della Murgia’s “Selvato” has a perfect plumpness to it that really does manage to convey the essence of Puglian red wine. The Pinot Noir from Reverdy possesses fruit of an entirely different character, but it’s no less suited to performing double duty in the living room and dining room, perhaps due to being equidistant from the serious yet seriously quaffable reds of Saumur and Burgundy.

This week we welcome back Jen Salomé from our valued partners Haw River Wine Merchant, who will be pouring a selection of their direct import wines, as well as an eccentric Italian white from importing legend Neal Rosenthal. The Lis Neris Cabernet Sauvignon is a fantastic Friulian take on the ubiquitous red grape, while the Barbera from the Paitin estate, situated amidst the most recognizable names in the Italian Piedmont, delivers all the bright cherry fruit and acidity that this grape’s legions of fans have long appreciated. From Burgundy we’ll taste the 2022 “Les Champans” Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes-De-Beaune blanc from Domaine du Prieuré, a perfectly weighted and textured expression of Chardonnay with hints of citrus and ginger, and round things out with an exciting new producer from southeastern Tuscany. Neal Rosenthal works with some of the most sought-after growers in Europe, he also has a keen eye for rising stars, of which Maria Sole is certainly one. Her farm is called Ficomontanino (roughly, “Little Fig Mountain”), and her “Zacinta Revi” Toscano Bianco (named after one of the family’s beloved horses, is a real treat. The wine is 70% Sauvignon Blanc with 30% directly pressed Sangiovese (Sangiovese vinified as a white wine, in other words) added for complexity. Maria Sole allows the Sauvignon Blanc to macerate on its skins for three days: enough time to contribute a bit of color and to enhance the wine’s textural persistence, but not enough to turn it into a full-bore skin-contact-style white. The results are delightful, with tangerine, anise, and musky flowers supported by firm minerality, tangy acidity, and beguiling zip.

Dani here, with a wine feature that I had the pleasure of enjoying last night at my birthday dinner at . This red blend out of the Côtes du Marmandais in South-West France, not only paired beautifully with the Southern American cuisine but was also quite enjoyable on its own while we perused their extensive menu.

This balanced and elegant wine combines 35% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, 15% Abouriou (which almost went extinct until they found it growing on the side of a castle), and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. These are all very robust grapes that bring strong and juicy flavors of blackberries, prunes, and white pepper, delicately balanced with soft tannins and smoky tones thanks to the combined aging of 8 years in a mix of oak, concrete, and bottle.

With its balanced elegance and juicy approachability, it was an easy choice to pick out this bottle to take to dinner, even before we knew what we were eating. It ended up being the perfect wine with the tomato plate special, blackened salmon, and pork tenderloin special over a pumpkin cornbread pudding. I’d highly recommend heading over to ACME this week to enjoy their specials of the week and all the other delicious dishes on their fall menu!

10/18/2024

Join Grant this week for a swing through Portugal, featuring a beguiling riff on the ‘claret’-style red wine from Bordeaux (that created a practically unslakable thirst in Britain) and an old-vine white blend from Bairrada legend Luis Pato, before heading to Ventoux near Chateauneuf-du-Pape for a funky, fall-friendly GSM blend from Stephan Saurel’s organic, family-owned (and built!) estate. We’ll also check out the sangiovese rosato from I Fabbri in Chianti, because, like Spinal Tap’s audience, the shifting weather dictates that we become “more selective” with the style of pink wine we bring in, but rosato like this is a must-have no matter the season. The philosophy at I Fabbri is to preserve natural resources and enhance the unique features of their terroir in Casole. Typicality and tradition go hand in hand with minimal intervention in the vineyard and in the cellar, toward the goal of natural wines that are a fascinating and genuine story of Chianti Classico. Il Fabbri is certified organic, having chosen to adopt sustainable, socially and ecologically sound agriculture.

Wine Tasting this Saturday, 12-3!!

This weekend we’re delighted to welcome Barrique Wines founder Jason Tippetts back to the NC wine scene and our Saturday tasting. I first discovered Jason’s excellent French portfolio on these very shelves (at David’s recommendation) and continue to marvel at his selections’ quality, personality, and value. After relocating to Salt Lake City two years ago, Jason and his family moved back to Asheville this summer to resurrect Barrique Wines and be closer to relatives in Durham, so we’re offering up a bumper crop of excellence from his portfolio. Stopping in Alsace, Beaujolais, the Loire, and the Languedoc, this is a tour not to be missed, and a perfect opportunity to experience the benefits that even light cellaring can bestow upon meticulously farmed and lovingly-crafted wines.
