This week we welcome back Jen Salomé from our valued partners Haw River Wine Merchant, who will be pouring a selection of their direct import wines, as well as an eccentric Italian white from importing legend Neal Rosenthal. The Lis Neris Cabernet Sauvignon is a fantastic Friulian take on the ubiquitous red grape, while the Barbera from the Paitin estate, situated amidst the most recognizable names in the Italian Piedmont, delivers all the bright cherry fruit and acidity that this grape’s legions of fans have long appreciated. From Burgundy we’ll taste the 2022 “Les Champans” Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes-De-Beaune blanc from Domaine du Prieuré, a perfectly weighted and textured expression of Chardonnay with hints of citrus and ginger, and round things out with an exciting new producer from southeastern Tuscany. Neal Rosenthal works with some of the most sought-after growers in Europe, he also has a keen eye for rising stars, of which Maria Sole is certainly one. Her farm is called Ficomontanino (roughly, “Little Fig Mountain”), and her “Zacinta Revi” Toscano Bianco (named after one of the family’s beloved horses, is a real treat. The wine is 70% Sauvignon Blanc with 30% directly pressed Sangiovese (Sangiovese vinified as a white wine, in other words) added for complexity. Maria Sole allows the Sauvignon Blanc to macerate on its skins for three days: enough time to contribute a bit of color and to enhance the wine’s textural persistence, but not enough to turn it into a full-bore skin-contact-style white. The results are delightful, with tangerine, anise, and musky flowers supported by firm minerality, tangy acidity, and beguiling zip.

See you there!

Dani here, with a wine feature that I had the pleasure of enjoying last night at my birthday dinner at . This red blend out of the Côtes du Marmandais in South-West France, not only paired beautifully with the Southern American cuisine but was also quite enjoyable on its own while we perused their extensive menu.

This balanced and elegant wine combines 35% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, 15% Abouriou (which almost went extinct until they found it growing on the side of a castle), and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. These are all very robust grapes that bring strong and juicy flavors of blackberries, prunes, and white pepper, delicately balanced with soft tannins and smoky tones thanks to the combined aging of 8 years in a mix of oak, concrete, and bottle.

With its balanced elegance and juicy approachability, it was an easy choice to pick out this bottle to take to dinner, even before we knew what we were eating. It ended up being the perfect wine with the tomato plate special, blackened salmon, and pork tenderloin special over a pumpkin cornbread pudding. I’d highly recommend heading over to ACME this week to enjoy their specials of the week and all the other delicious dishes on their fall menu!

Join Grant this week for a swing through Portugal, featuring a beguiling riff on the ‘claret’-style red wine from Bordeaux (that created a practically unslakable thirst in Britain) and an old-vine white blend from Bairrada legend Luis Pato, before heading to Ventoux near Chateauneuf-du-Pape for a funky, fall-friendly GSM blend from Stephan Saurel’s organic, family-owned (and built!) estate. We’ll also check out the sangiovese rosato from I Fabbri in Chianti, because, like Spinal Tap’s audience, the shifting weather dictates that we become “more selective” with the style of pink wine we bring in, but rosato like this is a must-have no matter the season. The philosophy at I Fabbri is to preserve natural resources and enhance the unique features of their terroir in Casole. Typicality and tradition go hand in hand with minimal intervention in the vineyard and in the cellar, toward the goal of natural wines that are a fascinating and genuine story of Chianti Classico. Il Fabbri is certified organic, having chosen to adopt sustainable, socially and ecologically sound agriculture.

Wine Tasting this Saturday, 12-3!!

This weekend we’re delighted to welcome Barrique Wines founder Jason Tippetts back to the NC wine scene and our Saturday tasting. I first discovered Jason’s excellent French portfolio on these very shelves (at David’s recommendation) and continue to marvel at his selections’ quality, personality, and value. After relocating to Salt Lake City two years ago, Jason and his family moved back to Asheville this summer to resurrect Barrique Wines and be closer to relatives in Durham, so we’re offering up a bumper crop of excellence from his portfolio. Stopping in Alsace, Beaujolais, the Loire, and the Languedoc, this is a tour not to be missed, and a perfect opportunity to experience the benefits that even light cellaring can bestow upon meticulously farmed and lovingly-crafted wines.

Something for everyone at this Saturday’s tasting, whether you enjoy light, rich, easy, or contemplative. Anna from Piedmont Wine Imports guides us through stylistic tour of France and Italy sure to connect you with a new favorite: lean, focused Chardonnay, Syrah rosé that combines levity with intense fruit, a plump yet lively dolcetto perfect for weekday meals, and a Puglian blend that demonstrates the virtues of southern Italian reds while deftly avoiding their potential shortcomings.

Dani will be taking our taste buds on a tour of Spain this Saturday from 12-3! Stop by at any time to taste these delightful treats along with some charcuterie from Left Bank Butchery.

We’ll start in Basque Country with a sustainable producer who specializes in crisp and refreshing Txakoli wine. They named this wine Xarmant, meaning “charming”, as they have yet to find a soul that can resist the charms of their lovingly and carefully made, unmistakably Basque wines.

Next, we’ll taste an organic, fresh, and energetic red from a husband and wife team in Bierzo. Focused on keeping everything as natural and authentic as they can, all of their wines are hand-harvested, foot-crushed, and 100% delicious and expressive of their region.

Our final wine will be a Tempranillo out of Rioja that has more body and complexity than the former red, while also expressing the truth and gastronomy of the native Basque region it comes from. It is produced by a family-run winery that utilizes a traditional style of fermentation that dates back more than two hundred years!

To finish out our tasting lineup, we will end with a vermouth out of Asturias, made from apples! Not your typical vermouth, this barrel aged apple vermouth has intense complexity and layers of spices and autumnal flavors while staying bright and refreshing! It is the absolute perfect fall drink and you must stop by this Saturday to try it!

I’m a sucker for a good barrel-centric bottling, so Robert Perroud’s ‘Foudre #5’ Côte de Brouilly was a natural fit for the shop. It’s also nice to track down a photo of the actual fruit involved, which we did when stumbling across this golden-hour pic of grapes destined for Robert’s luckiest foudre in 2021. Come taste this harvest, along with three others, this Saturday from 12-3 for free.

The sun is back, and it’s still feeling somewhat summer-y, so we’re going to keep things on the lighter side this Saturday, starting with the vino bianco from Alla Costiera. Dry and crisp, this white is made from Tai (Friulano) Garganega and Moscato grapes. While perhaps more famous for his reference-point prosecco, this still wine from Filippo Gamba is aromatic, fun, and worth your attention. We’re also fortunate to welcome back Paolo Cianferoni’s Rosato di Caparsa. 100% organic Sangiovese, this is the kind of humble, remarkable wine that you bring to a party and find out a local restaurant owner AND a local importer also brought it. Deep and intense, this wine manages to fully express its sangiovese character in a way no other rosato does. It’s also a perfect segue into some lively cru Beaujolais from Robert Perroud. His eponymous 2021 Foudre No. 5 comes from a single 5000-liter barrel, filled with gamay from vines located on the steep hillside of Mont Brouilly. Lastly, we’ll swing down to western Sicily, where Aldo Viola crafts his enchanting Catarratto ‘Bruto’ Frizzante. It’s Aldo’s first release of a sparkling wine made with an ancient method of finishing fermentation in bottle (aka, a pét-nat). Allowing a bit of skin contact for texture, the bubbles are pleasingly silky, and the aromas are lush, fruity, and mineral; funky but fun and just what I always hope this style of wine tastes like.

09/05/2024

From Beaujolais France, this Orange wine is made entirely from Chardonnay grapes that have been fermented in contact with the skins of the grapes for 2 weeks. ”Orange wine” is a recent phenomenon but an old thousands-year-old Eastern European technique aimed to explore the essence of the white grapes, and adding a delightful complexity to the wine. This wine in particular is pure and expressive with bright aromas of dried flowers, stone fruits, and citrus. It is unlike any other Chardonnay you have ever had!

Join us as we welcome cooler temps and shortening days by pouring TWO red wines at our tasting again for the first time since June. We’ll feature the Domaine Chiroulet “Java” red blend from the Armagnac region near the Pyrenees, plus the elegantly balanced and fruity 100% Syrah  ‘Les Pitchounnettes” Crozes-Hermitage from Domaine Les 4 Vents, after kicking off with the floral Chateau Tour Des Graves blanc, and the perfectly proto-autumnal ‘Les Temps des Oranges’ skin-contact Chardonnay from from Jean-Michel Dupré in Beaujolais.

Warm Weygandt Wine Welcome #1!

Domaine Gauby 2020 ‘Calcinaires’ rouge and blanc

Until the April closure of importer Peter Weygandt’s retail store up in DC, it was always a treat during northern forays to pop in and grab a few choice bottles unavailable here in the NC market, and the vivid wines of Domaine Gauby were regular purchases.

Fast forward a few months, and we’re delighted to announce that some of these gorgeous wines are now available at the shop.

Located on the slopes of the rugged Agly valley in Rousillon, southern France, Domaine Gauby’s trailblazing commitment to a vigorous biodynamic viticultural regimen has culminated in a unique style of winemaking, demonstrating a near-perfect balance between power and restraint, and that unfailingly expresses the exceptional limestone and schiste terroir of the myriad small parcels that comprise their 30 hectares under vine.

Gerard Gauby and his son Lionel conjure intense yet delicate flavors and aromas by emphasizing manual, rather than mechanized labor. Wild plants and trees are allowed to grow in and around the vineyards, while weeds under the vines are plowed using a team of mules.
As a result of his commitment to these and other practices, Gerard is widely regarded as the king of biodynamic winemaking in southern France.

Gerard’s philosophy is rooted in an understanding of wine as a picture of a specific place and vintage. This unflinching individuality has given the wines of Domaine Gauby a vibrancy and precision worth experiencing; stop by the shop, and discover just why we’re so excited to finally have these on our shelves.

We’ve been woefully short on sake here as of late, so we’re delighted to reboot and refresh our selection with the help of our friend Drew from . While sake is closer to beer than wine fermentation-wise (grain starches being converted to sugars, which are then converted to alcohol, as opposed to simply sugars from grape juice being converted to alcohol), sake can possess the aromatic complexity and liveliness on the palate that makes it a welcome presence at the table. Kanpai!

Here’s a deeper dive into the flavor profiles of the sakes we will be featuring this Saturday!

“Cherry Bouquet” - A favorite among sake enthusiasts due to its lovely aroma and clean taste. Floral rather than fruity, with a touch of pear, and perhaps melon.
“Fair Maiden” - Almost transparently light and delicate, with a winsome natural sweetness and innocent grace that are irresistible.
“Northern Skies” - Poised, pared-down, cleanly balanced, and spare in structure - the kind of sake one can drink enjoyably for hours at a stretch.
“Trapeza” - If Seitoku were any lighter it would float away on a breeze. Pirouettes in perfect balance, with just enough body to support its delicate flavor. A graceful, refined sake with easy drinkability.

Like a European soccer club kicking off their new season, sometimes you have to make some late substitutions. Here at the shop, that means Anna from Piedmont Wine Imports will be stepping in for Grant this Saturday, pouring La Cappuccina Soave and Bruno Rocca Langhe Rosato, as well as the delightfully zesty ‘INDI’ Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG from the Rosina sisters, and finishing with the return of “Le Petit Clos Maia” from Géraldine Laval in the Languedoc. We fell in love with this fresh and juicy Grenache blend when we snagged a case last year before it disappeared, and this cooler weather was just the welcome we needed to get it back on the shelf.

08/09/2024

Don’t be intimidated! “Skee-yo-peh-TEE-no”: A native grape variety of Friuli, also known as Ribolla Nera, it is probably native to the Prepotto area in the province of Udine, around 20 miles from the Slovenian border. The origin of its name is uncertain, however, as it is onomatopoetic, it probably stems from the fact that Schioppettino, with its high fixed acidity, after being bottled when young and having completed malolactic fermentation in the bottle, became slightly fizzy, giving the impression, to the ear and the palate, of crackling due to the CO2 that developed. It is also believed that the word ‘schioppettare’ [“to crackle”] derived from chewing ripe grapes, with their characteristic taut and thick skin. A mouthful to pronounce, perhaps, but well worth the mouthful of flavor. Ruby red in the glass with violet reflections, alongside aromas reminiscent of wild blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry. Full-bodied without being too alcoholic, the fresh citric acidity makes it a perfect compliment to rustic Friulian fare like wild boar pappardelle, or your favorite rack of ribs. Certified organic, and with an estate pedigree stretching back to 1290(!), we’re going to say the Visintini family’s winery is certified historic.

Florentino Martínez Monje, the incredible force behind Luberri, is a jovial and mercurial spirit with a heart the size of Rioja. He is also a serious winemaker, a self-made cosechero who is so talented he often makes his craft look easy. In reality, Florentino is one of the most respected farmers in Rioja because he grew up in the vineyards and understands his landscape better than almost anyone alive. While he does craft serious  (and seriously age-worthy) Rioja, he also champions the notion that Rioja should be seriously fun. His Zuri blanco is a perfect example: 80% Viura, 20% Malvasia, and 100% a blast to drink.
