🗓️Save the date! Join us Feb. 27 @ 6 p.m. for the annual Mitchell Symposium featuring Dr. LeRhonda Manigault-Bryant, “Dr. Rhon,” Director of The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History.

The Mitchell Symposium in Occupational Science is named in honor and memory of Dr. Marlys Mitchell, the founder of the master’s program in occupational therapy at the UNC School of Medicine, and her husband, Earl, a great supporter of Marlys. Symposium scholars deliver a public lecture and participate in talks, discussions, and meetings with faculty, students, and researchers from throughout the division and the Department of Allied Health Sciences. Initiated in 2011, the symposium has been made possible through generous gifts from friends and alumni of the division.

🤝 It takes a team! The Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice supports a campus-wide initiative for the intentional integration of interprofessional learning & collaboration. Our MSOT students have the opportunity to collaborate with these interdisciplinary groups through interprofessional education and practice. With miscommunication being a leading cause of medical error in hospitals (Alder, 2023), we value the opportunity to practice these skills and engage with other providers in training to best support one another.

Today is National Rural Health Day! This is a day to celebrate the people, groups, and organizations serving the unique healthcare needs of the rural United States. Nearly 1 in 3 North Carolinians live in a rural area of the state, and according to the NC Office of State Budget and Management, our rural communities are quickly growing.

Three definitions of urban/rural often cited include: (1) densely populated areas of at least 2,500 people (urban) and all other areas (rural) – US Census Bureau; (2) metropolitan counties (urban) and nonmetropolitan counties (rural) – US Office of Management and Budget; and (3) counties with densities of 250 people per square mile or more (urban) and all other counties (rural) according to the North Carolina Rural Center.

No point in unpacking, the Occupational Therapy Rual Health Committee (OTRHC) will be hitting the road again soon! Members completed their first visit to the Southeast and learned from New Hanover county local practitioners about the needs of the region, as well as engaged with Brunswick county middle school students about occupational therapy as a potential career. The OTRHC will continue to make visits to the region, and students will have an opportunity to complete one of their fieldwork 2 experiences there. Thank you to the Health Profession Workforce Development Subcommittee of the UNC/Novant Health Partnership to recruit providers and broaden access to occupational therapy services.

UNC OS/OT is making global impact and building international partnerships!

Dr. Ryan Lavalley () and PhD Candidate Sayoko Kawabata () had the opportunity to travel to Japan for the Japanese Society for the Study of Occupation Annual Conference and a partnership building visit with Nagoya University. Dr. Lavalley presented the international keynote with Sayoko’s assistance in interpretation and Sayoko presented work from her dissertation process.

The conference explored social transformation through occupation and featured multiple speakers and workshops focused on using occupation in community development, practice, and engagement.

Then our UNC delegation traveled to Nagoya, Japan to visit Nagoya University School of Medicine and Department of Health Sciences to continue building partnerships between the Universities and facilitating a workshop on Building Age-Friendly Systems. We are thankful to who offered funding to support the trip.
