New in the store....
When Irene Ostendorf fires her rifle, the shot sends an out-of-town cyclist tumbling and her new pastor, J.W. "Dent" Denton, into the thorniest dilemma of his already complicated ministerial career. How can he earn the goodwill of the townsfolk, support the eccentric old shooter, and offer help to the injured young man, all at the same time? The more Dent tries to do the right thing, the further he stumbles into a minefield of small-town secrets that everyone - especially the president of the local Last Man Club - seems hell-bent on preserving. While Dent digs deeper into the town's past and his own failed marriage, Ashley, a young college student with a curious tattoo, wrestles with a secret that threatens to expose her and tear her loved ones apart. But when a teenaged waitress named Maya disappears into a winter storm, Dent and Ashley find themselves on a collision course with their pasts - one that will end in an inescapable choice. Keep their secrets, or save Maya.

As you vacation and travel over the July 4th holiday, be sure to buy local no matter where you go.

4 reasons to shop locally:
1. Spending at a small business rather than an out-of-town chain keeps more money in the local economy.
2. If you shop locally while traveling, you can get a personal feeling for the place you’re visiting plus meet lots of fascinating new people.
3. By shopping at local establishments, you are helping to increase the number of people employed in the community.
4. It’s also a good idea to shop locally while traveling because it might be more cost-effective.
Have a safe and wonderful holiday from your friends at the Country Register!

JUST IN - We have a new book by James Ristau from right here in Chamberlain.
"Farmer's of Light explores the scientific and spiritual elements of being a farmer in today's world, from the creation of the universe all the way to how regeneration of the soil compares to the regeneration of our souls. For the Christian farmer, the thought-provoking questions within inspire introspection and renewed faith in God and modern-day practices to care for the land God has provided."

Megan Kinney's third book will be out soon, and guess what, Megan will be with us at Old West Trading Post on Friday June 21st starting at 11AM. It is also Scavenger's Journey so it should be a fun day. Come and visit with Megan and ask her all your questions about her books, writing process, and inspiration for her stories. Pick up a book and get it signed in person! If you are not going to be able to stop in that day, just message us and I'll make sure I get a book for you and have it set aside for when you can pick it up. We also have Megan's first two books for sale at the store if you haven't had a chance to read them yet.

We have quite a few Mari Sandoz books for sale in our book section including some first editions and I believe at least one signed book. Stop in sometime and check them out along with other wonderful regional books.

Remembering Western Writer Mari Sandoz, the author of several histories that demonstrated sympathy for Indians that was unusual for the time, is born in Sheridan County, Nebraska on May 11, 1896.

Sandoz had a difficult childhood on a Nebraska homestead. Her father, Jules, was a bitter, tyrannical man, who took out the frustrations of homesteading on his wife and children. Unusually bright and studious, Sandoz eventually escaped to the University of Nebraska, which she attended irregularly from 1922 to 1930.

Sandoz authored a number of novels, and today she is remembered for her meticulously researched non-fiction history. Her 1935 biography of her father, Old Jules, is a bittersweet and moving history of homesteading on the Great Plains. Even more valuable, though, were Sandoz’s histories of the Plains Indians. In 1949, she published Crazy Horse, a biography of the great Sioux warrior who participated in the 1876 defeat of George Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. For decades after Little Big Horn, Crazy Horse was usually portrayed as a bloodthirsty savage who helped murder a great American hero. Sandoz’s biography revealed a noble and admirable man dedicated to his people and to resisting white theft of their traditional lands.

Strong willed, ambitious, and dedicated to providing an accurate history, Sandoz’s work marked the beginning of a movement that greatly revised how Americans viewed the history of western settlement. The Indians were not the villains in this great historical drama, Sandoz suggested, but the victims. Mari Sandoz died in 1966, just as many Americans were starting to embrace her more compassionate view of the Native American.

Our Story

Specializing in Antiques and Collectibles - Old West Trading Post began in 1998 when Greg and Melanie Olson started their antique shop at the site of the former Old West Museum that was owned and operated by Greg’s parents for 29 years. When Greg and Melanie started the Old West Trading Post, their goal was to operate it for 20 years. Well, they reached their goal of 20 years in 2017! After 20 years of operating 7 days a week during the summer season (49 for Greg), their bones were getting more weary and they made the decision to find a smaller location and operate year round, but only part time. Planned hours may be found by looking at the pinned post on the main page or on the website. They are happy to open at other times by appointment. They will also be open by chance. You never know when they might be at the store working on a project or putting out new items. Call 605-680-1831 for appointment or to check hours. Customers will be happy to know that the new location has both air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter! Stop in and see us we still specialize in the REAL ANTIQUES our customers expect.
