🎵I see the moon and the moon sees me🎵

Tonight is the first full moon of 2025. This full moon is also called the “wolf moon”, after the propensity of wolves howling during the deep months of winter🐺🌕

Historically, wolf howls would have been heard across the state, but modern South Dakota no longer has a wolf population, due to hunting in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Instead, if you are visiting the Badlands today, you are likely to hear the howls of our resident coyotes, who are also native to the area.

Moonrise in the Badlands tonight will be at 4:13 pm. For most of the continental USA, the Moon will also appear to pass in front of the planet Mars tonight.

Before the Badlands of South Dakota became the National Park it is today, it was an area covered by a shallow sea. When the water started receding, 75 million years ago, the sediments of sand, clay, and silt left behind are what formed the landscape we have today. The fossils which were found are what led them to believe that the area was previously underwater.

Happy 2025 🥳
