Tasting Today - New French Wines - 1:00 to 7:00pm

Today we will be moving to France with wines from Burgundy, Bordeaux and Southern France. We will start off with a bolder white from southern Burgundy that is great for the cold weather. Then we’ll dive into some deliciously Old World reds from Bordeaux and southern France.

First up is a white from the warmer Macon sub-region of Burgundy that offers a rich mid-palate and warm spice nuances. From there we’ll move to southern France and Languedoc with a playful Cinsault and a bolder Syrah, Grenache blend from Saint-Chinian. We’ll move up to the Rhone valley with a dark fruited, brooding wine from Franck Balthazar, then finish things off in Bordeaux with a left bank Cabernet based blend..

We hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:

Gerald Talmard Macon 2021
Mas d’Espanet Freesia Rouge 2021
Chateau Fontanche “Les Uyeres” Saint-Chinian 2019
Franck Balthazar Cotes du Rhone 2020
Chateau Canteloup Bordeaux 2020

Tasting Today - Italian Reds - 2:00 - 7:00pm

We were looking for a couple great Aglianicos for the shelves this week and in the process tasted through a number of other Italian reds. Today’s tasting lineup is composed of the highlights from those efforts and is looking to be a good one.

We’ll begin with one of the best values in Chianti I’ve come across in quite a while. Cultusboni’s “RS” Chianti Classico is beautifully Tuscan while maintaining a rich mid-palate. The COS Nero di Lupo from Sicily is deliciously bright and lively with red berry fruits and playful tart nuances. The Macarico Andrea is the first of our two new Agliancos with a darker-fruited and dense plate to dig into. Well follow that with a sultry and seamless Amarone that is big but balanced. Then we’ll top things off with our second Aglianco. Hailing from Taurasi, the Colli di Lapio Andrea is a giant mouthful of wine that even at the 2017 vintage is just now coming into its own and likely still has plenty of life ahead of it.

We hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:

Cultusboni Chianti Classico RS 2021
COS Nero di Lupo 2022
Macaricio Aglianico di Vulture 2022
Degani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2020
Colli di Lapio Taruasi “Andrea” 2017

Tasting Today - A Look At Merlot - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Merlot has had a rocky decade or two, thanks in large part to some outside influences that have nothing to do with the quality of wine it can make. It is a hugely important grape variety used in some of the wine world’s most iconic wines and can be an unsung hero in some New World regions like Napa Valley. Today we’ll feature a selection of New World and Old World Merlot to showcase what the grape variety can do.

We will begin today with a quick sidebar, another NA wine, Odd Bird GSM, which has been written up as one of the best de-alcoholized wines on the market. From there we’ll dive into the Merlot with Trig Point Merlot, a riper expression from California with a rich mid-palate and red fruits unfolding on the finish. Next we’ll switch to a pair of french reds, a Merlot form southern France that offers a dense earthy, mushroomy profile and a Bordeaux with baking spices and bell pepper intertwined with wild dark berry fruits. Lastly, we’ll return to California with Robert Foley Merlot, an iconic Napa producer making a powerful, dark fruited wine that has seen 7 years in bottle and is ready to enjoy.

We hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:

Odd Bird GSM
Trig Point Merlot 2022
Chateau Beausejour “Emprientes” 2020
Domaine Manoir du Gravoux Pentimento 2019
Robert Foley Merlot 2017

Tasting Today - Non-Alcoholic Wines - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Well thank you again for a great 2024. It is always a big shift to make from the hustle of the holiday season to the quiet months of January and February. January is also a month when many people cool things down a bit after a season with lots of food and drink. I have set a goal for this month to explore and assemble a selection of non-alcoholic wines that approach the experience and quality of the real thing. There are some pretty decent options out there but you have to w**d through some not-so-great wines to find them. Today we’ll taste through a new lineup of new NA wines with the Leitz wines being a particular highlight. No DD needed for this one.

The One of One Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and dry with hints of citrus. The Leitz Riesling is surprising expressive and able to maintain the varietal characteristics of its grape variety. The Leitz Pinot Noir similarly does a great job of maintaining the qualities of a German Pinot Noir. The Sori Red Blend is very fruit forward with unique lively red fruit flavors and the One of One Cabernet is simpler, medium-bodied dry red.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:

One of One Sauvignon Blanc
Leitz Riesling
Leitz Pinot Noir
Sovi Red Blend
One of One Cabernet

We’ll begin today’s tasting with two sparklers that will be great additions to your New Year’s Eve, a German Pet Nat with light, playful bubbles and a fantastic Prosecco Superiore that we have on sale for the holiday. From there we’ll move to a trio of crowd pleasers that to serve at your end of year parties and gatherings. There is a rich and textured white made from Clairette Blanche, a super easy drinking Spanish red that is a new shop favorite and an Austrian red with loads bright red berry fruit focused by zippy acidity and chewy tannins.

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Tasting Today - 1:00 - 7:00pm

Today we’ll be featuring some really cool wines made from lesser known grape varieties. They hail from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Chile. There will be a really cool orange wine made from at grape called Albana (not featured in the picture) that is one of the most pleasing and drinkable orange wines I’ve had in quite a while. The Chilean white is made from a grape called Pedro Jimenez while the Portuguese white is made from Arinto. The two reds at the end are from a very small producer making wines from the Mencia grape in Spain. They are bold, spicy and delicious but come with a higher price tag, so I’m going to offer 35% Off each of them during the tasting in hopes that they end up on your table this holiday season

I hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:

PX #1 Pedro Jimenez 2021
Quinta Varzea Da Pedra Branco 2021

Tasting Today - Minimal Intervention Small Producers - 1:00 - 7;00pm

We have had a lot of new wines coming in over the last couple months. As I was looking around the shop this week, deciding what to pour at today’s tasting, I realized that we have a number of compelling small producers we haven’t featured yet. All but one are from France and a number are from a small importer that focuses on producers practicing minimal intervention.

There are two Chardonnays that make a great side-by-side tasting, a super cool skin contact wine with 8 years of bottle age, a duo of Cabernet Francs that offer completely different looks at the grape variety, and a laser focused red made from a grape called Far Servadou (a more obscure grape variety that we happened to pour last week too). This is a really fun one.

Today’s Lineup:

Les Souriants Sourire Bourgogne Blanc 2021
Kellerei St. Pauls Chardonay 2021
Broc Cellars Cabernet Franc 2022
Clos Cibonne Tibouren Cuvee Speciale des Vignettes 2016

Tasting Today - Old World Wines - 1:00 - 7:00

We brought a lot of wine in yesterday and we’ll feature a fun selection of them to pour for you at today’s tasting. The whites are from Italy and the reds are from France. The whites both hail from Tuscany, the first being a delicious and bright Vernaccia and the second a blend of Trebbiano and Malvasia. The reds veer a little farther to the natural wine side of things than we tend to go in the shop, but they are sought after wines that embrace the wild side of things. For reds there is a juicy PetNat made from Grolleau and a bright and crunchy Syrah, both from the Loire Valley. We’ll finish off with a denser red from southern France made from a grape called Far Servadou.

We hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.

Today’s Lineup:

Capella Sant Andrew Vernaccia di San Gimignano
Colombaio di Cencio Bianco
Julie & Toby Brainbridge Cuvee Crush
La Bascule Gloriette
Nicolas Cormorans Josette

I hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving. I am thankful for all of you and your support of my business. As of Black Friday our 2024 numbers have already exceeded the numbers from all of 2023 This year I set at goal to focus on growing the business and all of you have helped make that a reality.

As I was looking for fun wines for our Thanksgiving tastings, the list became too large to fit into just two. Today’s wines will pair well with your Thanksgiving leftovers, but they are also just great wines that are a lot of fun to taste through. We’ll go from Italy to Washington State to France. Th Soave is light-bodied but full of flavor and texture. The Viognier is big and bold with fantastic aromatics. The Beaujolais is a bit wild and the Cotes du Rhone is rich and savory.

Today’s Lineup:

Corte Sant Ales Soave 2022
K Vintners Viognier 2022
Chateau des Vergers Beaujolais Lantignie 2020

Tasting Today - Fun Thanksgiving Pairings- 1:00 - 7:00pm

Thanksgiving has snuck up on us and it is now right around the corner. We are well stocked with great pairings for your Thanksgiving dinner. Today we will feature a really fun variety of options. It will include my favorite rosé from 2023, a red and white co-ferment, a skin contact Pinot Gris, a unique white varietal from Burgundy and a couple fantastic Loire Valley reds.

We’ll start with an Aligoté. This is a lesser known grape frown in Burgundy that makes lively but rich whites. From there we have two wines from Willamette Valley, a Pinot Noir rosé that has wowed me over the summer and is drinking better than ever, followed by a skin contact Pinot Gris that does an incredible job integrating nuances of tannin, color and flavor from the grape skins. For the second half we’ll return to France starting with a red and white grape co-ferment with a playful nature that everyone can enjoy. Next will be a Mondeuse Noir, Gamay, Pinot Noir blend from the Loire valley that was tailor made for Thanksgiving and we’ll end with one of the best Cabernet Francs from the Loire Valley that I’ve had in recent memory.

Today’s Lineup:

Vignerons de Buxy Bourgogne Aligoté 2022
King Estate Rosé of Pinot Noir 2023
Scenic Valley Farms Pinot Gris 2022
Remi Pouzin Vice Versa
Domaine Saint-Germain Crac Boum Bu 2022

Tasting Today - Thanksgiving Pairings - 1:00-7:00pm

Well Thanksgiving is speeding our way, so the next two tastings will focus on some great wines that will pair beautifully with your Thanksgiving dinner. In addition to the wines we’ll feature at the next two tastings, we have many more fantastic pairing options to meet anybody’s tastes and preferences ready to go at the shop. Stop by any time over the next couple weeks and we’ll get you all set for the holiday.

We will start today’s tasting with three wines from A to Z Wineworks. They are an Oregon producer with a bolder style that holds up great to the mix of flavors on the Thanksgiving table. From there we’ll move to California with a Pinot Noir from County Line. All of their wines do a great job showing purity of fruit and their Pinot Noir is rich and delicious, embracing the fruit forward side of California while maintaining balance. We will finish things off with Domaine Diochon Moulin-A-Vent which showcases a more muscular side of Gamay from Beaujolais.

Today’s Lineup:

A to Z Pinot Gris 2023
A to z Chardonnay 2021
A to Z Pinot Noir 2022
County Line Pinot Noir 2023

Tasting Today - Terre Rouge from the Sierra Foothills - 1:00-7:00pm

The Terre Rouge wines are made by Bill Easton. He is one of the original “Rhone Rangers”, pushing the cultivation and use of Rhone varieties in the Sierra Foothills of California beginning in the 1980s. His wines are bold but precise. Bill also holds onto his wines until he thinks they have had time to properly evolve, so today’s wines are from the 2014, 15, 16 and 17 vintages. This is a fun one today.

We’ll start today with a Viognier that is full-bodied and aromatic, but maintains lift and liveliness, followed by a Grenache Blanc that is rich on the palate and packed full of fruit and texture. The Tete A Tete is a GSM blend showing ripe and concentrate red fruit flavors and great depth. We’ll end with two Syrahs, the Les Cotes de L’Ouest is broader on the mid-palate with hints of the more savory notes of northern Rhone and the DTR Ranch single vineyard Syrah is darker fruited with firm structure and many layers to dig into.

Today’s Lineup:

Terre Rouge Viognier 2019 - $14.99
Terre Rouge Grenache Blanc 2014 - $14.99
Terre Rouge Tete A Tete 2015 - $22.99
Terre Rouge Syrah 2016 - $23.99
Terre Rouge Syrah DTR Ranch 2017- $49.99

We are beginning to look towards the holidays and thinking about some fun wines to stock the shelves with. Last week I tasted some amazing Italian reds and today we have the highlights for you to enjoy.

We’ll begin the tasting with a single vineyard Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) from Alto Adige in the northeast of Italy. This wine rivals some fine Burgundies, with is combination of intensity and polish. Next is a Barolo that is amazingly expressive on the nose while mastering the classic power/finesse tension of Barolo. From there we have a Brunello that shows superb typicity for the region with brooding power framing intricate berry fruit flavors. We’ll end with a super tuscan style red made entirely form Cabernet. While the label might fool you into thinking it is a modern style, it is all Tuscany and one of the most fantastic wines made from Cabernet that I have had in recent memory.

Today’s Lineup:

J. Hofstatter “Barthenau” Pinot Noir 2018 - Regular $79.99, Sale $49.99
Cantina Massara Barolo “Massara” 2018 - $67.99
Mocali Brunello di Montalcino 2018 - $68.99
LEGIT Toscana Rosso IGT Cabernet - $47.99

Tasting Today - Pahlmeyer Jayson Napa Valley - 1:00 - 7:00pm

We can’t afford to open bottles like this very often for a tasting, but every once in a while it is fun to feature some higher end wines. Often when I taste wines at this price point at trade tastings they are somewhat underwhelming, but the Jayson wines from Pahlmeyer are pretty special. They accomplish the quality and style that all Napa producers strive to achieve but often can’t quite capture. I hope you’re able to make it in today to taste these wines. We’ll only be opening one bottle of each so hopefully that will make it through the day.

Today’s Lineup:

Andis Wines Sauvignon Blanc 2022 - $19.99
Jayson by Pahlmeyer Chardonnay 2018 - $59.99
Fess Parker Syrah 2020 - $29.99
Jayson by Pahlmeyer Red Wine 2021 - $89.99
Jayson by Pahlmeyer Cabernet 2020 - $109.99

Tasting Today - Northern Italy and More - 1:00 - 7:00pm

We just brought in a Barbera d’Alba made by Massolino that I’m excited to share today. As the 2019 vintage, the last 5 years have allowed this wine to reach a beautiful harmony. Also from the north of Italy we have a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Grigio from Friuli that are both excellent in their own right. There is a Champagne inspired sparkler from Emilia-Romagna in the mix and we’re throwing in a new red Burgundy to stir things up.

If you haven’t made it to the shop in a while you’ll notice I’ve been hard at work rearranging things to maximize space and make room for more wine. It still has the same general feel, but there is a ton of wine in all different price ranges and a lot of great deals I’ve been able to sn**ch up in the last couple months. Come check things out next time you’re in town.

We hope to see you at the shop this afternoon.
