Turley had been known for producing rather bombastic red wines in its early days, but we’ve found the current wines to have a measure of elegance and balance. If you’ve not put a bottle of Turley’s reds on your dinner table, perhaps now is a good time to partake???

This dynamite Portuguese red is quite versatile and can pair well with both red and white wine foods. It’s intended to be immediately drinkable and uncomplicated. If you enjoy Beaujolais, Dolcetto and other chillable reds, come grab a bottle of “Explosivo.”

Some have described Jacquesson as “Baby Krug,” but this is far less costly than Krug and pretty damned good. Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites provide the fruit for this exceptional Champagne which has a minimal dosage, being made for adult palates, not mass-market drinkers.
Dry and crisp!

Italy has so many wonderful grape varieties that are off-the-beaten-path, it’s a delight to explore and enjoy the discovery of something that may have more than a century of history but which we find to be “new.”
The Casale del Giglio winery produces a delicious red of a grape that does not grow here in California (yet) and which is rare in Italy.

Vigneron Jacques Seysses married an American woman who is from Hillsborough, near our shop in Burlingame. So there’s a local angle, but we’ve long been fans of the Dujac wines. Their son Jeremy married an American woman whose family owns vineyards in Napa, making this a real Franco-American enterprise. These are a treat and, as you might expect, in very limited supply.

We’ve rarely been excited about very many wines from Paso Robles, but this is a most pleasant surprise. It’s from a special vineyard site owned by The Dodd Family called “Klau Mine.” Winemakers are having a measure of mercurial success cultivating vines in this area. The Lone Madrone winery offers a unique blended red that’s 49% Tannat, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Petit Verdot. All robust reds making for a full-bodied blend.

The Velenosi family are top winemakers in central/eastern Italy and this “Ninfa” red is worth a try, as it competes favorably against seriously expensive bottles from Tuscany, California, France and South America. Put it on your dinner table with Cabernet Cuisine. You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised.

María José López de Heredia’s great grandfather founded the company in 1877 and she’s the fourth generation to run the place. If you’re fortunate to visit the winery, it’s like stepping into a time machine and being transported back more than a century. The wines are classic and they remain affordably-priced.

A French customer came in one day and noticed a display of Sancerres. Thinking these are always white she held up a bottle to tell me the wine must be spoiled, advising me to “look at the color! It’s quite dark.”
I informed her, “Elodie, this is a red wine.”
Oh!!!

You can elevate your week-night Burger or weekend Pizza with a bottle of this tasty, artisan Sonoma red made by one of California’s best winemakers. Miro Tcholokav has an impressive track record in making award-winning wines under the Trentadue banner as well as his own. From the vineyard to the enologist, this wine has an impeccable pedigree.

There’s a small area north of Bolzano where the Santa Magdalener appellation is situated, comprising just 160 hectares of vines.
The Schiava grape is the star of this show, augmented with a small amount of Lagrein. Waldgries is a top producer and the wine is sensibly-priced. You might consider this in place of a Pinot Noir or Beaujolais.

If you’re a fan of robust Napa Valley reds, this is a terrific blend from a winery once owned by Orin Swift’s founder. Ripe plum fruit with cherries and berries along with a touch of oak, this is a full-bodied, full-throttle California red. Pair it with steak, lamb, grilled meats or other full flavored dishes.

For some wine drinkers Sherry is well out of fashion. While that’s sad news for Sherry wineries, it’s good news for consumers as prices remain sensible in a world with so much overpriced plonk.
Lustau makes first class Sherry, so come discover the taste of excellence at a sensible price.

Vega Sicilia’s Unico bottlings go for a bit north of $500, yet their other property, Alión, is still within reach for many wine drinkers.
We’ve recently enjoyed the 1994 and 1996 vintages of Alión, both still showing handsomely. We like drinking these young, too, as they are routinely showy, especially with lamb or beef. While top Bordeaux and California Cabernets have become so damned expensive, describing a $100+ bottle as offering good value is difficult, but we find this to be a worthwhile splurge.

In Italian “Alba” signifies “sunrise.” The plural, “Albe” is given to this prestigious Piemontese red, as each of the three Nebbiolo vineyard sites, all close to the town of Barolo, see the sunrise at slightly different moments in the morning. Aside from its distinguished quality, it’s one of the few “bargain-priced” Barolos, so don’t dilly-dally…

Sylvie & Francis Wenner own about 12 hectares of
Pinot Noir with a patch each of Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Their sons are now working in the family business, too. The non-fizzy Rosé from this small region is highly-prized but rarely exported. We have a few bottles. The Champagne costs the same and it’s well worth its price.

From a small winery in Switzerland’s Valais region we have a thoroughly charming, crisp white made of three cool varieties, none of which is Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. They’re going organic, too. Fresh and zesty, this is a stellar cocktail white and pairs well with seafood and Asian cuisine.

We’ve offered the wines from the Miloš winery for a number of vintages as more than a few customers have visited Croatia and found the wines to be pretty good. This is not a particularly smooth red wine, so it’s a good option for those who appreciate the tannic “bite” found in young Cabernets, Bordeaux and Nebbiolo.
