With so many indigenous Italian white grapes emerging from obscurity, there is much from which to choose. And here we have one that’s old, but it’s suddenly new again. Marina and Alberto Ghibellini are relative newcomers in the wine world, but with a top vineyard crew and consulting winemaker, they are making their mark. Stop by and pick up a bottle!

I tweaked the point of sale system and though the bottles on display have $52.99 price tags, this will ring up for $44.99 for bottles picked up in the shop through the end of the business day on Monday, March 31, 2025. This is a little test of social media…

Italy is replete with distinctive, off-the-beaten-path grape varieties. We’re fond of Prié Blanc, a white grape found in the northwestern corner of the country. The Valle d’Aosta is a tiny wine area and situated at relatively high elevation. Blanc de Morgex et de Lasalle satisfies fans of Chablis and Sancerre as there’s an underlying minerality to this remarkable non-oaked vino bianco.

Italy's Piemonte has long been known for its excellent red wines, but these days there’s a significant volume of good dry whites. You’ll need well more than $250 for a bottle of Bruno Giacosa’s entry level Barolo and maybe twice that for the special bottlings. But you can enjoy Giacosa’s excellent Arneis for small change, relatively speaking.

It’s been claimed the Pelaverga grape makes a wine that’s an aphrodisiac and this bottling carries the name “Basadone,” a Piemontese term for the poppy that adorns the label. We understand it can also translate to something like “kiss the women.” Cherries and spice and everything nice!

The Grosjean Family is cited as a benchmark producer in Italy’s Valle d’Aosta where they describe their vineyard work as “heroic viticulture.” High altitude and steep slopes are a challenge for both the grapevine and the vineyard workers. And the wines can be quite delicious.

Italy’s Marche region is well below the radar for many wine
drinkers, but there are numerous gems to be had.
Here’s a wonderful red that’s unknown these days, but it certainly deserves a wider audience.

Many tourists enjoy visiting Greece’s Peloponnese region as it’s a great summer vacation spot. You can eat and drink well there, too.
The wine industry in Greece is developing rapidly and we’ve found a number of good wines as the quality has improved greatly over the past decade. This selection is tasty and well-priced.

With so many wines wearing big, frequently undeserved price-tags, we assembled a flight of reds from the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation and were delighted to taste a bunch of good bottles. My favorite was this one from the Coulon Family. The wine over-performs for its price and merits your attention as it’s quite versatile in terms of food pairings.

Customers are routinely delighted with this limited bottling of Northern Rhône Syrah, as it compares favorably to Napa Cabernets and French Bordeaux in the same price range. Lamb, Beef or Duck are great pairings.

This is a nicely aged bottle from the cellar…Château Margaux is, as you probably know, an elite First Growth from France’s Bordeaux region…Left Bank…Cabernet-based. Matured entirely in brand new French oak barrels. A truly deluxe bottle!

Europe experienced a very hot summer, but temperatures in Portugal’s Douro Valley were close to normal in 2003. There are many really excellent 2003s with Taylor Fladgate being an upper echelon wine. This is perhaps a shade more sweet than typical Taylor vintages and it’s a thrilling young wine despite its age.
Even if you’re not a Porto aficionado, this is a wine worth experiencing.

We frequently enjoy Pewsey Vale’s Contours Riesling with Asian Cuisine or Crab Cakes as it’s dry, fairly crisp and deeply flavorful. It’s a rare California wine drinker that knows Australia makes Rieslings worthy of comparison to those of Germany, Austria and the West Coast. By the way, quality Riesling can last as long as a good Bordeaux or California Cabernet. Please make the discovery while this wine is still sensibly priced!

We first met Stephanie & Brian Terrizzi as our paths crisscrossed in Italy’s Barolo area many years ago. They are passionate about Vini Italiani and they make some good California wines from grape varieties which are associated with Italy. We recently enjoyed a bottle of this exceptional red which was a most satisfying companion to braised beef. It’s certainly worthy of a place on your dinner table.

Many consumers associate Riesling with always being a sweet wine, but in Germany more than half the country’s production is dry or very close to it. The key point for Riesling is balance. There are some Rieslings that have a modest level of sweetness, yet you’d guess them to be dry. And with spicy foods, slightly sweet versions taste quite dry. Well, the Trefethen family makes a dry Napa Riesling and with its crisp, tangy acidity, it comes across as bone dry. The main thing is it’s delicious and we’ve got it sale-priced presently.

If you appreciate the overtly berryish character of Beaujolais wines but prefer something a bit fuller bodied, this attractively priced French red may do the trick for casual week-night enjoyment.
You’ll have a challenge finding a locally made red of this caliber for such a modest price. Chicken, pork, red meats, pasta or pizza will be dressed up by this charming wine.

Turley had been known for producing rather bombastic red wines in its early days, but we’ve found the current wines to have a measure of elegance and balance. If you’ve not put a bottle of Turley’s reds on your dinner table, perhaps now is a good time to partake???
