This superb Champagne boasts a pale gold hue with fine, persistent bubbles. It wafts from the glass with scents of ripe yellow apples, white peaches, and brioche, underscored by subtle notes of honey and toasted almonds. The palate is a harmonious balance of richness and precision, showcasing layers of citrus zest, poached pears, and a hint of ginger, all supported by a minerally backbone. Its elegant finish lingers beautifully.

This cuvée is a blend of equal thirds Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. The dosage is a mere 2 grams per liter and it was disgorged in March 2023.

Bertrand-Delespierre is a fourth generation, family-owned grower-producer. They are located in the Premier Cru village of Chamery in the Montagne de Reims.

The 2012 vintage in Champagne is considered one of the best in recent years, prized for its perfect harmony of ripeness and acidity, producing Champagnes with both power and finesse.

Here at Boulder Wine Merchant, we have always considered the Robert Sinskey winery to be a benchmark for California wines, especially their Vin Gris of Pinot Noir, a bona fide classic in the world of wine today.

Founded in 1988, Robert Sinskey was one of the first growers in Napa to employ organic farming. Today, many in the wine industry point to the winery as the pioneer of “regenerative farming” in the state. What is “regenerative farming”? It means giving back biodiversity to the earth by taking care of the soils with a mind to make them sustainable and healthy. The wines actually do good for the planet while making for better wine.

In 1991, Robert Sinskey began using regenerative farming early on in its development. Back then, there wasn’t even a name for regenerative farming.

“Though it was never enough to just make and sell a product,” writes Bob Sinskey on the winery’s website, “all I ever wanted for Robert Sinskey Napa was to have a sense of purpose while we farmed and made a wine that spoke for itself. We needed to feel we were doing the ‘right thing,’ that we stood for something; that we were conscientious of the potential damage modern farming does to the environment and that we would do everything possible to heal an ailing earth.”

Lagarde’s organically-grown rosé is a unique blend of 90% Sémillon, and 10% Malbec from very old vines planted back in 1906. It greets you with charming scents of flowers and raspberries before expanding to a mouthfilling dry rosé with plenty of fruit. Sémillon’s full body and waxy yellow fruits offer plenty of presence on your palate. Look for accents of lemon, beeswax, peach, and chamomile. This richly textured rosé pairs excellently with grilled seafood, particularly herb-crusted salmon or shrimp skewers. It’s also an ideal companion for summer salads or light appetizers.

As it’s warmed up outside, we gain a terrific excuse to explore the refreshing delights of lightly chilled red wines. Red wines that chill down especially well tend to be light-bodied, youthful, and unoaked. Beaujolais, Pinot Noir, young Rioja, and many Italian and natural wines truly shine when given a moderate chilling. Dropping their temperature to 50-55° F. allows the vibrant red fruit flavors to take center stage for a joyful sipping experience that is lively on your palate.

Serving temperature has a meaningful impact on the flavor of any wine, muting some flavors while enhancing others. In this case, chilling brings the wine into sharper focus and gives it a refreshing lift on the palate. It also minimizes alcohol’s heat, making these reds additionally thirst-quenching for a casual summer sip to complement simple fare.

We encourage you to experiment with cooling down red wines, but bear in mind that bold reds do not show well when too chilled. They seem disjointed, incomplete, and their tannins harshen when served cold.

We are excited to introduce you to a true gem from Jalisco, Mexico — Lagrimas Tequila Blanco. This exceptional spirit is a testament to the artistry and passion that goes into every bottle, crafted by a family with generations of tequila-making expertise.

Lagrimas expands upon the distiller’s passion for terroir by seeking out the best single ranches in Jalisco. Agave is harvested from a single field and brought to Cascahuín for distillation. This single-parcel approach to tequila production echoes that of wine, prioritizing the soil’s characteristics, and is here reflected in the agaves’ individual flavors. Each bottling of Lagrimas del Valle represents an individual ranch and a single vintage that the agaves were harvested.

The moment you pour this “El Sabino” 2023, you are greeted with a vibrant, herbaceous bouquet reminiscent of freshly cut agave, lime, flowers, white pepper, and oregano. The palate expands to a full-bodied expression layering in pear, yellow peach, and an inherent salinity. Please join us for our weekly Wine Wednesday tasting on June 12, as live music returns to Boulder Wine Merchant.

The shop has always been a big fan and a supporter of local artists. That tradition continues through our partnership with , a Colorado-based team of musicians, film makers, and audio engineers who are passionate about music, promoting musicians, and music fans. The collective provides inviting spaces for musicians to reach their fans through lLive and live stream events, interview-based artist sessions and film and recording projects.

This Wednesday, from 5-7pm, the shop will be presenting Boulder artist William Thomas (above), singer-songwriter and lead singer of , one of Boulder’s most exciting new indie bands.

Taking inspiration from American roots music, Irish folk, progressive rock, classical music, William makes music for the human “heart and spirit.”

“We have been a proud wine partner and sponsor of Stone Cottage Studios for the last two years,” says Brett, “and this is a way for us to continue our relationship in a new way. The 2018 Arnaldo Rivera “Undicicomuni” Barolo is a classically-styled expression from a forward-drinking vintage. It is organically grown and hails from each of the prestigious region’s eleven communes. In the glass, this wine displays a brick red hue. It offers up the hallmark Nebbiolo aromas and flavors of dried rose petals and dark cherries layered with hints of tar, earth, and iron. “Undicicomuni” possesses structured tannins and will reward time in the cellar, though this 2018 is relatively ripe and quite approachable now. Nonino is widely considered to be Italy’s greatest distiller and is renowned for its line of prestige grappas and fruit distillates.

The Nonino Amaro Riserva is made by distilling native Friulian grape varieties, infusing the resulting distillate with the Nonino’s proprietary blend of herbs and botanicals, and then aging the amaro in French barriques (small oak barrels).

Like all of the Nonino products, the Quintessentia Riserva is bottled using an ancient bottle shape that makes for a wonderful conversation piece.

The classic Amaro Essentia, aged 12 months in barriques, is available as well ($50.98).

Cruse Wine Company is his small winery in Petaluma dedicated to making uniquely Californian wine for your table, often with bubbles. Boulder Burgundy Festival founder Brett Zimmerman MS and his team are pleased to announce the dates for this year’s gathering: Friday-Sunday, October 18-20, 2024.

This year’s festival will feature a winemaker dinner at Frasca on Friday, October 18; the legendary Paulée lunch at Corrida on Saturday, October 19; and the producer seminar and Grand Tasting on Sunday, October 20.

Now in its 14th year, the Boulder Burgundy Festival is a non-profit organization that raises money for community causes and wine education.

Ever year, top Burgundy winemakers, U.S. wine professionals, and Burgundy collectors and enthusiasts gather in Boulder for what has become one of the leading wine festivals and tastings in the U.S.

From the marquee winemaker dinner (this year at Frasca) to the highly popular Paulée lunch (this year at Corrida), the festival was founded by Brett to make Burgundy accessible to wider group of wine lovers while raising money and awareness of causes dear to the Boulder wine community and beyond.

Sunday’s Grand Tasting gives participants an opportunity to taste more than 200 wines from Burgundy — all at a reasonable admission price that raises money for important causes.

A note from Brett:

This winery is the perfect collision of Rhône and Burgundy. You may have had the Lucien Le Moine wines from Burgundy? This is a husband-and-wife team — Mounir and Rotem Saouma — that has been making outstanding red and white wines from Burgundy’s finest climats since 1999. Rotem and Mounir is a recent project and comes with an exciting purchase of vines in Pignan, a vineyard made famous by the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines of Château Rayas. After a recent tasting of the current 2021 vintage, I was impressed by the undeniable depth and concentration of these wines, coupled with a detail and precision that is likely connected to their time spent producing wines in Burgundy. The wines are both generous and compact and will develop beautifully with a little patience in the cellar. The snow has melted and rosé season has finally arrived!

Among the many beautiful rosé wines of France, one stands apart for its distinct style — Tavel from the Rhône Valley. This is no simple pink sipper, but a rosé of incredible depth, structure, and longevity. Pale Provençal rosés are still in vogue right now, and we wish to remind you how good this more concentrated and structured style can be.

Tavel is a Côtes-du-Rhône Village that uniquely specializes solely in rosé wine production. The hot, sunny, and dry climate and iconic round “galet” stones that cover the vineyards allow the Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, and Mourvèdre to fully ripen. This results in deeply colored, full-bodied rosés with undeniable power and complexity. Think of them as light reds that you get to drink lightly chilled.

Our newest arrival from this benchmark region is the 2023 Lazeraies Tavel. It is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 20% Carignan. With its brilliant ruby-salmon hue, this wine announces itself as a serious pink wine. It wafts from the glass with generous aromas of black raspberries. On the palate, it overdelivers generous flavors of berries intermixed with wild herbs that continue through the lingering finish. The concentrated fruit is balanced by a mouthwatering acidity. It’s tough to find values in Tavel, so we were especially impressed that Lauzeraies comes in at $22.98/bottle.

Meet the winemaker!

Moritz Haas, Assistant Winemaker at Weingut Leitz will be at Boulder Wine Merchant pouring three of his wines. Leitz is a well-respected winery dating back to 1744 in Germany’s Rheingau, where Riesling reigns.

The owner of Branchwater Spirits, Kevin Pike, will also be here pouring his artisanal gin from New York.
