Please join us TOMORROW 1/22 as we taste wines from Rioja, the Spanish wine region that helped to save the European wine industry in the mid-19th century when phylloxera struck.

It’s a story today widely told: When the phylloxera epidemic began to decimate the vines of Europe, the Spanish wine region Rioja stepped up and began providing world-class wines for the European market.

Phylloxera is an aphid-like insect, a carrier for vine disease. When it first struck in France in the mid-19th century, growers were devastated. Years later, the French would save their vineyards thanks to disease-resistant vines that were developed in the U.S. But it would take decades before the French wine industry returned to its former glory. In the meantime, growers in Rioja stepped up to fill the European demand for fine wine.

On Wednesday, 1/22, we will be tasting three of our favorite wines from Rioja, including the legendary Muga Rojo Reserva Unfiltered (please visit our site to purchase now).

01/14/2025

As far back as the time of the Greeks and Romans, Sicilian viticulture has been known for the high quality and diversity of the wines grown on the island.

From the southwest coast where Marsala is still made today to the southeast coast where red grapes like Nero d’Avola and Frappato are grown and often blended together, Sicily remains one of the most compelling producers of “island” wines in the world.

In more recent years, grape growers have focused their attention on the high-lying slopes of Mt. Etna in the northeast, where the volcanic ash, rich with organic material, gives the soil robust fertility.

We recently tasted the Etna wines of Federico Curtaz (above), who, until his retirement some years ago, was the longtime vineyard manager for Angelo Gaja.

While the wines from the low-lying coasts are rich and dense, wonderful for roasts and grilled meats, the wines of Etna are known for their lithe character, depth, and nuance.

We were blown away by how good these wines are and so we decided to feature Sicily this week.

Please visit our website to purchase.

And please join us tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15, 5-7pm, when we will be pouring his Etna Bianco together with three other favorite wines from Sicily.

Support your local wine shop! Please read and share Brett’s recent opinion piece about the new challenges faced by independent wine retailers in Colorado (link in bio). New regulations allowing wine sales at big box grocers are threatening the livelihood of small businesses. Please remember to shop local and please support independent businesses! They are the fabric of our community. Thank you!

Who says Dry January has to be boring or restrictive? Take these fun and flavorful new arrivals for a sip:

Pentire “Coastal Spritz” Aperitif $47.98/700mLPentire’s non-alcoholic coastal concoctions are interesting and complex. Their red aperitif is concocted from quinine, blood orange, sea rosemary, and oakwood. Serve it over ice or with club soda and garnish with an orange wedge.

Proxies Sparkling Non-Alcoholic Rose $5.98/250mL
Proxies crafted an crisp and crushable Rose from Riesling, strawberries, lime zest, and white tea.

Ghia “Le Spritz” Aperitif $5.69/236mL
Ghia’s signature non-alcoholic apertivo is available in a ready to drink single-serve can. It sports a balanced mix of fruit notes with bitter orange and rosemary, all brightened by bubbles.

St. Agrestis “Phony Negroni” $3.98/200mL
St. Agrestis has bottles a terrific non-alcoholic version of this classic cocktail. While this is tasty as-is, a few of us here like to add a splash of Gin and Red Vermouth to make a low-octane Negroni.

Wisetails Alcohol-free Mojito $3.69/12oz
Crafted in Colorado, Wisetails’ mojito is bold and flavorful with plenty of lime and mint.

Wisetails Alcohol-free Margarita $3.69/12oz
Crafted in Colorado, Wisetails’ Margarita is zesty, not-too-sweet, and even just a tad salty. This also makes a darn tasty low-octane Margarita if you add a splash of Tequila.

It’s not every day that a pristine collection of aged Barolo doesn’t get immediately grabbed up by the legion of avid Piedmont collectors.

That’s why this particular allocation is so special. Brett, who has deep ties in Langhe and is widely considered a leading Nebbiolo expert, jumped at the chance to secure this offering of aged Barolo from some of the appellation’s most iconic producers.

He is confident of its impeccable provenance and excellent storage conditions.

PLEASE VISIT OUR BLOG TO BROWSE AND PURCHASE.

Aldo Conterno 2008 Barolo Bussia Colonnello, anyone?

Today’s offering includes not only the Aldo Conterno above. But also a six-vintage vertical of Massolino Barolo Margheria: 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015.

And the cherry on top?

The Vietti 2009 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione. Barolo aficionados will be the first to tell you that legendary winemaker Luca Currado did some of his best work in the 2000s. Luca has since moved on from the estate, making this bottling even more collectible. The 2011 is also available, also bottled by Luca.

Don’t miss out on these extraordinary wines with bottle age. Most collectors feel that Barolo reaches its greatest drinking window 20-30 years from the harvest. These wines are an extraordinary example of Barolo in its greatest expression.

Order now: Altima caviar for your holiday table!

Earlier this week, we checked in with our good friend Alayna Steinman who works with our favorite caviar, Altima.

“We work exclusively with local farmers across the world to ensure that our caviar is coming from sustainable farms producing high-quality caviar,” she told us. “All of our caviar is made using the malossol technique,” she explained, meaning that only salt is used to cure the caviar.

We know that a lot of you are looking forward to serving great caviar at your holiday celebrations this year. So Brett has selected some of his favorite caviar pairings as well.

Please visit our website to browse all caviar and Brett’s pairing suggestions.

Please note: To ensure freshness, these caviars ship directly to your home from Altima within 2 to 3 days of ordering. Store pickup is also available.

And check out for some great serving ideas!

As Alayna likes to say, “caviar is the celebration!”

“Brett’s Thanksgiving Recommendations”

When it comes to picking wines for the holiday weekend, “think of Thanksgiving more like a cocktail party with your best friends and family,” says Brett. “Make the selection delicious but not fussy and try something new this year to make it interesting!”

One of the issues that can complicate Thanksgiving wine pairings is that it’s virtually impossible to find the perfect wine for such a wide variety of flavors on the table.

“Don’t try to match the ideal wine with the perfect dish,” he says. “I can think of so many times I’ve picked an Alsatian wine or a Grenache Blanc for a given dish. But at the end of the day, that wine was drunk three hours before the food was served!”

Here at the Boulder Wine Merchant, we are ready to help in any way we can. And we have a wide range of featured-for-Thanksgiving wines that are accessible and delicious, with or without food.

But we also encourage you to try something new this year.

A vermouth for a low-alcohol cocktail to welcome your guests?

A dessert wine to go with classic holiday desserts?

“Alsatian wines are some of my favorites to serve at Thanksgiving,” says Brett. “They go so well with squash and autumn foods. But I also love a Sardinian Cannonau or a Tuscan Sangiovese because they are so friendly to stuffing and rich, full-flavored dishes like turkey and gravy.”

Please visit our blog to see recommendations online. Or stop by the shop today or tomorrow and one of our staff will be happy to help you find the write wines for your Thanksgiving meal.

Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for all your support in 2024!

Wine Wednesday
11/6, 2024, 5-7pm
complimentary

Please join us tomorrow, Wednesday, 11/6, 5-7pm, as we will pour a wonderful new discovery from California’s Central Coast, Outward Wines.

These are all new wines at Boulder Wine Merchant. Here’s the staff tasting note and see below for more info on these delicious wines.

Outward Wines produces small-lot, site-specific wines from California’s Central Coast. Their house style is focused rather than jammy and overdone. Nothing souped-up or confected. They currently farm about six acres of vines themselves and also source grapes from vineyards along the coast. All of these vineyards are farmed organically or biodynamically.

1. Outward Chenin Blanc 2023, Paso Robles $33.98
2. Outward Chardonnay Bassi Vineyard 2023, San Louis Obispo Coast $46.98
3. Outward Cabernet Franc Massa Vineyard 2023, Carmel Valley $44.98
4. Outward Cabernet Sauvignon Massa Vineyard 2023, Carmel Valley $44.98

From the Outward Wines website:

Outward Wines is focused on producing small-lot, site-specific wines that collectively showcase the diversity of terroir across California’s Central Coast. They currently farm approximately six acres of vines across 4 different vineyard sites: one in Arroyo Grande and three in the Santa Ynez Valley. Outside of the grapes we farm ourselves, we source from other thoughtfully farmed, coastal-influenced vineyards that span the Central Coast, including sites in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and San Benito counties. All of the vineyards that we work with are farmed organically at minimum and are located in close proximity to the cold Pacific Ocean. In the cellar we strive to minimize inputs throughout the winemaking process in order to allow for a clear picture of what the site can provide naturally, and to give the wine a true sense of time and place. To that end, we utilize native yeast to carry out fermentations, age exclusively in old French oak barrels, and bottle without fining or filtration.
