Spain meets California, in this tasting of Albariño and Tempranillo. Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Cristina Torres, daughter of Marimar Torres, founder and proprietor of Marimar Estate Vineyards and Winery. Originally from Barcelona, Spain, and part of the 4th generation of the Torres winemaking family, Marimar founded the winery in 1986. Marimar is still at the helm of the winery today, with Cristina, her only daughter, the General Manager.

Located in the Russian River Valley, the winery produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, wines the region is well known for, along with Spanish native varieties Albariño and Tempranillo. When tasting through the wines with Cristina I immediately knew I wanted to showcase the Albariño and Tempranillo next to expressions from Spain.

The Torres' own two estate vineyards, Don Miguel and Doña Margarita, named after the family's Patriarch and Matriarch, respectively. After years experimenting with Albariño and Tempranillo in these two vineyards, the Don Miguel vineyard proved to have the ideal conditions for both varieties to thrive.

We'll taste these wines alongside Albariño from Rías Baixas, and Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero - the exact styles they are inspired by. The wines are the ideal collection to showcase side-by-side, and I assure you will be impressed by the quality all around.

I hope you'll join us this week to explore these selections:
• Marimar Estate Albariño 2022 - Russian River Valley, California
• Forjas del Salnes Leirana Albariño 2023 - Rías Baixas, Spain
• Marimar Estate Tempranillo 2019 - Russian River Valley, California

Happy Halloween! Join us today or Saturday for tasting of"Orange" and "Black" wines - skin contact whites and inky dark reds.

Our favorite Slovenian winery is making another appearance in this tasting, with a skin-contact blend of Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Gewurtztraminer, and Chardonnay. A

A Portuguese blend of 7 different varietals is an all-new Orange wine to the shop, and is a sure treat with its combination of exuberance, whimsy, and freshness.

We're featuring a wine made from 100% Tannat, a grape variety known for its high level of tannins, deep inky color, and dark fruit characteristics.

Finally, a seriously inky Shiraz-based Australian blend (a rarity on our shelves), is getting its moment. Lovers of rich, intense, high ABV wines should come in droves for this limited time feature, that puts the "Prisoner" in its rightful place...

Costumes are encouraged as you sip this flight :

* Grape Abduction Company Orange Wine 2023 - Štajerska. Slovenia
* Fitapreta 'A Laranja Mecânica' - Alentejo, Portugal

This week we are exploring the various styles of Côtes du Rhône red wines, where Grenache is king and the base of almost all wines.

The Rhône Valley is located between the 44th & 45th parallels north, and the Rhône River runs the length of the entire region. The region is split into the north and south, given their distinctively different climates. Of the Côtes du Rhône appellated wines, 95% of production comes from the Southern Rhône.

We’re tasting 4 Southern Rhône CDR, that will range from 100% Grenache, to a Grenache/Syrah blend, and two different 4-grape blend selections. We'll taste wines aged in steel, concrete, and oak (independently), to again showcase stylistic differences.
I hope you'll join us for this exploration and decide which Côtes du Rhône style tops your list:

• Domaine la Manarine Côtes du Rhône 2021
• Franck Balthazar Côtes du Rhône 2022
• La Florane Côtes du Rhône 'A Fleur' Rouge 2022
• Domaine de la Janasse Côtes du Rhône Villages 'Terre d' Argile' 2022

20 years ago this week Merlot took a hit it never saw coming. "Sideways" was released on October 12, 2004, a film that takes place in Santa Barbara wine country, during which the lead character degrades Merlot to undrinkable plonk, while putting Pinot Noir on a pedestal of greatness. The film's director, Alexander Payne, had no clue the result would be a cultural phenomenon impacting both grape varieties drastically. In the years following "Sideways," sales of Merlot plummeted and have yet to entirely rebound. Meanwhile, Pinot Noir has been riding the high tide of growth ever since. I could go on about what led Payne to put Merlot in the victim seat, rather I'll invite you join us this week and we'll dive into some of the movie factoids and ironies that play out, while we of course stream the movie as we sip. In this tasting we are putting the 2 grape varieties side-by-side, letting you make the call on which wins your favor.

I hope you’ll join us as we taste wines from the native regions of each grape variety, along with a set of California wines.

In a wine industry newsletter that came across my email this week a particular headline grabbed my attention, and I was immediately excited to share this with the 34th° Community.

The topic was the Loneliness Epidemic and its increasing impact on our society. This particular crisis is a matter of the degradation of social interaction over the past two decades. This was exacerbated by the COVID pandemic, but social media, while it connects us, has also been identified as a source of physical isolation and with it comes loneliness.

Loneliness and isolation do not merely impact our mental health. They are significantly connected to our physical health:

”The U.S. Surgeon General's advisory report found that loneliness increases the risk of premature death by 26% and isolation by 29%. Murthy said in terms of your lifespan, continuing to live in loneliness is equivalent to smoking up to 15 ci******es a day.”

The U.S. Surgeon General and others have offered numerous ways to address this crisis. But over and over again they offer the same suggestion: Create more opportunities for physical interaction among people. Simply, being with others curbs the loneliness epidemic.

Come Over October is a wine industry-initiated effort to encourage friends, family, and colleagues to “come over” during the month of October. It focuses on sharing wine, celebrating friendship, and in-person connection. Initially conceived by wine writer Karen MacNeil, Come Over October means to stress the historic way wine has been used as a symbol of community and togetherness.

There’s a reason I address you as the 34th° Degree Community, this spirit of gathering and togetherness is the core of our values and how wine is meant to be enjoyed. I hope you’ll embrace Come Over October and reach out to those who you know would appreciate being thought of.

We are pouring along with the rain today! If you can safely join us, come on over to 34th° as we explore some of the lesser known wines of Italy’s Piedmont region.

The hills of Roero are known for producing the best expressions of the white grape, Arneis. We'll taste one that is delightfully harmonic from start to finish with floral and stone fruit qualities. One of the most obscure varieties in the Piedmont is a white grape called Timorasso, which is currently enjoying a slight renaissance. Produced in the eastern Piedmont area of Colli Tortonesi, this is an age-worthy white wine that is uniquely Piedmontese. Nebbiolo is the most popular grape from the Piedmont region without question, and is the grape behind Barolo, Barbaresco, and many other red wines in the region. We're tasting one from the northern Colline Novaresi sub-region that displays a softer, elegant side of the varietal. Dolcetto, meaning "little sweet one", can cause confusion as the wine from the grape is not sweet at all. We'll taste one from the esteemed Dogliani DOCG that is perfectly balanced with fresh with dark berry flavors and moderate tannins.

* Demarie Roero Arneis DOCG 2022
* Ezio Poggio Caespes Timorasso 2021
* Ioppa Nebbiolo, Colline Novaresi 2022
* Pecchenino San Luigi Dogliani DOCG 2022

Blues, BBQ, and Grenache!
September 20th is recognized as International Grenache Day, and while this may not have been planned to coincide with a BBQ festival in Blue Ridge, GA, the two sure do pair up well. This week we're featuring a flight of wines that showcase Grenache is four distinct styles.

We’ll explore:

A Southern Rhône blend dominated by the white version of the Grenache grape, supported with Roussanne. The night-harvested grapes result in a wine that has a perfect balance of freshness and depth. A rosé of 100% Grenache from Santa Barbara County that is all new to the shop, and bears a story that has extra special meaning this week. A 100% Grenache/Garnacha from Spain, the varietals native country, that showcases the fresh, red fruit-forward, with a touch of spice side of the varietal. A Grenache dominant blend from the Languedoc-Roussillon region in Southern France, where Grenache serves as the backbone for many exceptional red wines
I hope you'll join us for this showcase of Grenache:
• Le Sang Des Seigneurs Costières de Nîmes Blanc 2022 - Rhône Valley, France
• A Tribute to Grace Rosé of Grenache "Highlands Vineyard" - Santa Barbara, California
• Casa Rojo Enemigo Mio Garnacha 2022 - Murcia, Spain
• Artisans Partisans Luna Fitou Rouge 2019 - Languedoc-Roussillon, France

09/11/2024

This week, as we give a nod to California Wine Month, we're celebrating wines from a handful of small production wineries that deserve your attention. We'll highlight two of California's most popular grape varieties, along with two wines made from obscure, scarcely grown varieties.

Chardonnay is the Golden State's most planted grape variety, we'll taste one from a small winery that produced just 190 cases of this Mendocino Chardonnay that is a far cry from the rich style many have come to expect. Twenty years ago a Hollywood film propelled California Pinot Noir into an even brighter spotlight than it had been enjoying, and it has not looked back. We're tasting one sourced from three vineyards located in the Gabilan Mountains and ancient sand dunes near Monterey Bay. Have you been wondering why California Trousseau Gris isn't sweeping the wine world by storm? Well, with only one vineyard in Sonoma's Russian River Valley AVA being planted to this grape, you're lucky to come across any of this wine at all. As luck should have it, you’ll find this pretty, pink hued beauty in this flight. Also in the rarely planted category are Italian varieties like Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Grignolino, and Freisa. Thankfully a few vineyards in the North Coast AVAs of Mendocino and Sonoma are focusing on these varieties, and we're featuring a wine that blends all 5 of these grapes into a joyful and tasty wine.

I hope you'll join us to celebrate these selections from the Golden State:

• Catch & Release Wines 'Fair Trade' Chardonnay 2022 - Mendocino
• Pax Wines Trousseau Gris 2022 - Russian River Valley
• Idlewild Wines 'Flora & Fauna' Red 2022 - North Coast
• Big Basin Vineyards 'Dune & Mountain' Pinot Noir 2021 - Monterey

Cheers to International Boxed Wine Day!

For the first time, we’re celebrating this day with the introduction of an actual boxed wine now available at 34th°! Hérisson is a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay from sustainably farmed Burgundy vineyards, and this wine is super delicious.

Don’t let this cute “little” box fool you, 3 liters (the equivalent of 4 bottles) are packed in this BiB, with the option to last for weeks once it has been opened, keeping that freshness glass after glass.

Similar to screw cap bottles, wine is boxes no longer is an automatic “cheap” or inferior wine. Innovative producers are making it possible to find a little gem here and there in this category, and this is one for you.

AND - in more traditional fashion, this week we are offering 10% off on all mixed cases (12-bottles), or 15% off on solid cases (12 bottles of the same wine). Stop in or place your order by Saturday, 9/14 to take advantage of this offer!

Cheers!

By popular demand, we'll offer 3 days of tasting this week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We're changing up the format a bit this week, and rather than having a single curated selection of wines, tasters will have the option to select 4 wines from a menu of 10ish total options. We'll have the key categories included - bubbly, white/orange, rosé, and red offerings, from various regions around the globe. For those who want to stay the course and avoid the agonizing chore of decision making, opt for "Dealer's Choice" and we'll take it from there. Make your plans to join us as we keep it casual on this weekend intended for rest and relaxation.
