Arnot-Roberts was founded in Healdsburg in 2001 by grade school buddies Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts. Over the years their wines have come to be some of the most distinctive, site driven and elegant wines made in California. It is no exaggeration to say Arnot-Roberts are some of our all time favorite wines in the shop!

Duncan (the one in the hat) will be in the shop this Friday, July 19 at Vine Street to taste through an incredible lineup of new releases! We’ll be featuring their rose, the insanely mineral-driven Watson Vineyard Chardonnay, their rare bottling of Ribolla Gialla, Trousseau and Syrah. Come discover why this duo is considered amongst the most dynamic winemakers in California leading the charge for wines with balance, deliciousness and integrity.

Dispatch from Hungary: Somló

Tales from a roadtrip through the region

In May, I joined our friends from Danch & Granger Imports on a road trip through Austria, Slovenia, Serbia, and Hungary while they made their yearly trip to visit their producers, including to Hungary’s small but mighty Somló appellation.

To explore more of Somló, and further into Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, and Serbia, join us at Solano Cellars for a tasting of 10 wines, food pairings, and discussion with Eric Danch, Catherine Ganger, and Brian Stapleton on Friday, July 19th.

[Link to wine dinner in bio]

Driving up from Lake Balaton, Somló jumps out of the horizon like a wave in otherwise still water. Hungary is a flat country; on a clear day and with the right vantage point, you can see straight through to the neighboring Slovenia, Serbia, Austria, and Croatia, fitting given its historically notable but fluid borders. So despite its modest elevation, Somló-hegy is hard to miss. Its significance within the context of Hungarian wine, both historically and in our present moment, and as arguably the ultimate wine of terroir and one of the best sources of white wine in the world, is also impossible to ignore.

The result of the erosion of ancient lava flows, Somló’s steep slopes of ancient sea sediment, hardened lava, and basalt are home to Hungary’s most densely planted vineyards, despite being by far its smallest appellation. That this unique composition of soils and geological shifts has created a terroir equal in quality to any other in the world is neither an understatement nor a new discovery - it was once home to vineyards owned by Hungarian kings; its wines were coveted by royalty across Europe, from Hapsburg leaders to Queens of England; Hungarian troops in the late 17th century saluted Somló-hegy as they marched into conflict with the Hapsburg rule; local laws around the same time made adding water to wine punishable by.....

Solano Cellars
Friday, July 12th from 5-8pm
Flight of 6 for $25 ($15 Club)

North Canterbury, New Zealand is a sweeping 200km region that runs along the South Island’s eastern shore, linking the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean, and where Theo Coles has been producing the stunning, singular wines of Hermit Ram for more than a decade.
When Theo was invited to the Limestone Hills vineyard in the Waipara Gorge in 2012, with its 1000 Pinot Noir vines planted on active limestone soil, and was asked to help the vineyard owner to make wine for the vintage, his first thought was only, “at least I’ll have some decent Pinot to drink...” Because for all the perfect conditions for Pinot Noir cultivation in the region, he had found himself frustrated by how little the wines coming from Canterbury tasted like the terroir they were pulled from. And Limestone Hills was, in his estimation, a perfect vineyard, with terroir well worth highlighting - a tiny, closely planted vineyard, treated with no sprays, and marked by a unique composition of limestone rocks and clay marl. As that first vintage evolved, fermented slowly and with no additions, matured in neutral oak hogsheads, it would provide Theo with the revelation that was the impetus for Hermit Ram - if this mix of savory fruit aromatics and salivating acidity is what North Canterbury terroir was capable of, it was too exceptional to continue to go unnoticed.
Today, Hermit Ram has expanded beyond Pinot Noir to include Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Muller Thurgau, and more, from tiny, naturally farmed vineyards throughout the Canterbury region of New Zealand, and each with its own story to tell. On Friday, we’ll have a lineup of wines that showcase the range of what this region is capable of - from balanced, textured Sauvignon Blanc to saline-laden white blends, juicy red field blends to elegantly nuanced Pinot Noir, and the quirky co-ferments and one-of-a-kind bubbles that only Theo could have dreamed up.

He’s back! Come meet & taste new releases with winemaker/wizard John Lockwood of Enfield Wine Co., a longtime favorite of ours at the shop and one of the most talented winemakers in California (and if you don’t want to take our word for it, The New York Times’ Eric Asimov has likewise been singing his praises for years)!

Having trained with some of the most esteemed winemakers in the world (Failla, Littorai, Bodega Melipal in Argentina) John always seemed destined to make waves in the industry. He started Enfield Wine Co. as a small side project while still working at Failla in 2010, and 3 years later, decided to take the plunge and focus on Enfield full-time. His dedication to finding compelling vineyard sites on the fringes of his home base in Napa (and beyond) has earned him a deserved reputation as a producer of some of the most nuanced, exciting wines that California has to offer. The epitome of elegance, John crafts delicate, nuanced masterpieces from vineyards that stretch from Calaveras county to Solano County, from the edge of the Sierras in Amador County to the windswept reaches of far West Sonoma County.

John will be pouring two of his Burgundian-styled Chardonnays, a picture perfect Grenache, one of the finest Tempranillos made in California and the heralded Xb05 Mourvèdre.

July 4th is upon us, and that calls for a party...and unless you're one of the privileged few with A/C, a pool, or some sort of masochistic appreciation for the 10th Circle of Hell that has settled on the Bay Area this week, you (like us) are in need of wine to distract from the oppressive heat!

All shops will be open on today from 11-4 for your backyard BBQ and poolside needs (or whatever form your celebrations take). To mark the holiday, we're offering 10% off 4-bottle purchases of all American wines in the shop - from old school classics to our favorite new discoveries.

Want to taste before you buy? We'll have some domestic bottles open to taste at each of the 3 (air-conditioned) shops today, and by-the-glass and special flights through the weekend.

All stores also pouring wines by-the-glass 11-4. Get your 4th started with us! ⛱

A failed cult; the eerie mythos of rural Northern California; a herd of camels corralled by the watchful eyes of replicas of Michelangelo’s “David”; an Israeli-born, Paris-based painter looking for a new purpose; and a unicorn vineyard in the Sierra Foothills that provided exactly the purpose he was seeking: that’s the story of Gideon Beinstock, The Renaissance Vineyard, and Clos Saron, arguably California’s original natural wine, and a story that could only have happened here.

On Friday, we’re celebrating an American icon, with a lineup of Clos Saron (some from Gideon’s personal library!) and a selection of bottles from the winemakers he took under his wing over the years - including Frenchtown Farms, La Onda, and Oest.

Baia: A Georgian Wine Story
Six wines - $15 | $5 Club
College Ave.
Thursday June 13
5-7:30p

The story of Baia is about 3 young siblings (Baia, her younger brother Giorgi, and her sister Gvantsa) from a small town in Georgia with a dream of making great, revolutionary, and most of all uniquely Georgian wine that would wow the world. Their journey takes them to the city (Tbilisi) then back to their hometown, where a small break would change their lives forever. We won’t spoil the ending quite yet, but no one in Georgia knew what Baia wines were in 2015. Now, 9 years later, we’re pouring them for you in Berkeley. These are some of the highest-quality organic Georgian wines being exported, coveted by restaurants and wine bars all over the world.

06/09/2024

For all its hard-to-pronounce native varieties, Croatian wine is as easy to love and accessible as just about any wine producing country in the world. Its four major wine regions stretch from the mountainous, sea-sprayed coastline to its warm, continental inland, not unlike California’s own vast wine landscape (and in fact, Zinfandel is a Croatian import). With an increasing spotlight being shone on the country, winemakers in Croatia are highlighting ancient, indigenous varieties, making wines that honor tradition while keeping on eye fixed towards experimentation and innovation. On Friday, our friends at Danch & Granger and Vinum imports will pour through a lineup of our favorite new releases, from beachy bubbles to boldly structured reds (and will teach everyone how to pronounce those tricky č, ž, and š in the process).

Building from her time working under California legend Gordon Beinstock at Clos Saron, Tahnee Shields of crafts balanced, “alive wines” that tell the stories of the land where the grapes were harvested in the Sierra Foothills, all from her shared cellar space in Richmond. On Thursday, we’ll have Tahnee behind the bar pouring her newest releases and old favorites, from textured, complex whites to nuanced and savory red blends (and even a charming piquette made with a friend’s local honey).
