This past spring we went to Alto Piemonte to visit the Mazzoni family in Ghemme -- and what a revelation! As prices climb like an agile mountain goat for the top names in Barolo, Alto Piemonte has become the spot for smart buyers looking for quality and value in Nebbiolo.

Mazzoni is the name those smart buyers should know! Here in Ghemme we're in the lap of the Alps, with high-altitude vineyards birthing riveting, mountain-kissed Nebbiolo. About 100 miles north from Barolo as the crow flies, Ghemme is winemaker Tiziano Mazzoni's home village, a place where he and his son have regrown their winemaking roots and are now crafting some of the region’s most vibrant and intriguing Nebbiolo wines.

These are bottles that can stand tall next to the finest from Barolo or Barbaresco, yet can be yours for outrageously reasonable prices. The family's Ghemme wines are stupendous; don't miss their Vespolina, a rare red grape from Alto Piemonte that is a delightful, chillable red for some serious poolside snacking this late summer.

You’re 2,000 feet above the Gulf of Naples, gazing at its calm azure waters while surrounded by ancient vines, on one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

The majesty of still-active Vesuvius is so compelling, however, that millions of people live and work in its shadow, close enough to tempt fate when it surely will blow again. A deep breath of sea air tinged with warm ash, slowly exhaled -- and you realize your destiny, your family’s vinous legacy, is worth all the risk.

Vesuvius native Ciro Giordano recently told us about that fateful moment when he knew it was time to create Cantine Olivella -- our newest partners in Campania, and one of the most exciting winemaking estates in all of southern Italy right now.

The extraordinary, rare creations from this unique winery speak with a single voice, loud and clear and soulful like the baritone of Vesuvius.

Wines that triumph white grapes like Catalanesca, brought to the region in the 15th century and currently only planted on the slopes of Vesuvius. Ungrafted and uncommon varieties like Caprettone and red grapes such as Piedirosso and Olivella have long been part of the family’s agricultural wealth.

You do not know volcanic wines until you've sampled these amazing bottles -- and they're IN STOCK!

Need a shot-in-the-arm, serious jolt of energy? Christelle Betton provides. The queen of Crozes-Hermitage (her chariot's a cargo bike, natch), Christelle infuses northern Rhone native grapes with a vibrancy that will make you want to dance all night long. ‘Espiègle’ is pure Syrah with 100% mischievous intentions; 'Caprice,' with its older vine intensity, delivers the bright and peppery flavors of northern Syrah with elan. To the whites, her 'Elixir' lives its name, a silky Marsanne that revitalizes; and 'Arpege,' heavenly music from the top of Hermitage, a bottle of liquid gold (and allocated to the drop). Christelle's latest releases are now IN STOCK and are they ever delicious.

Grab a glass and come with us to the vine-covered hills in Lucca near Tuscany’s western coast, where winemakers Moreno Petrini and Laura Collobiano have been working vinous magic for more than two decades. Tenuta di Valgiano is an enchanted, award-winning address for peerless red and white wines that continue to enamor and astonish the world’s most experienced palates. Here balance and elegance are the spirits that make everything move -- the aromatic pine trees, the verdant vines, the delicious wines in glasses so easily emptied (and refilled by generous hosts). We are loving the 2018 Colline Lucchesi Rosso right now, a "big, potent" wine (says Vinous) with nature writ large in each sip, and savory pleasure equally so.

It is time you discovered the majestic beauty of Mourvèdre wines from Bandol -- and the only address that consistently delivers is Château de Pibarnon. This southern red grape makes magic here in the south of France, with a bold intensity and rugged complexity that is immediately captivating. Yes, Bandol means beautiful rosé wines, too -- but Bandol Rouge is forever.

We have a lot of winemaker Eric de Saint Victor's Bandol wines in our own cellars, and you should do the same! While Burgundy and Barolo prices continue to climb, Bandol surprisingly remains an affordable luxury, with wines that always stand the test of time (and are absolutely delicious today). These are the bottles we cherish during the cozy winter months, a soulful red to share with close friends. IN STOCK!

Have you heard that 2021 is a phenomenal vintage in the Southern Rhône? It's true and the Faravel brothers' old-vine Grenache shined at Domaine La Bouïssiere! These vines grow at some serious altitude along a row of steep limestone cliffs. It's why Thierry Faravel's Girgondas is as aromatic and balanced as it is.

This is "mountain" wine! And exactly the sort of red you want with hearty fare and cooler weather (and what a cellar treasure, too). We are so proud to call the Faravel clan partners now for nearly two decades -- if you want the best of Gigondas, look no further. NOW IN STOCK!

Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi is the lead behind the organic estate of Rocca di Montegrossi. It is the only name you need to know for the best Chianti Classico in Gaiole in Chianti. Winemaking goes back 37 generations with this family, they may know a thing or two about their craft and unique high-altitude microclimate.

Named to Wine & Spirits Top 100 Winery list now seven times, it's clear that the wider wine world has realized what we've known for years -- that Rocca di Montegrossi is the source of Tuscany's most authentic and character-rich Sangiovese wines. The versatility of his Chianti Classico is sure to grace your holiday tables with poise and finesse. And for that extra special touch, the estate's single vineyard 'San Marcellino' is one of the finest (and most age-worthy) Chianti Classico wines on the market today. Both are IN STOCK.

The grape Pinot Meunier has pride of place in Champagne's Marne Valley, and Francis Orban is its champion! Nearly 90% of Francis' vineyards are dedicated to this singular grape -- and his wines are powerful and seductive, showcasing Meunier at its fullest potential. Critic Audrey Frick at JebDunnuck.com agrees -- these notes are fantastic and we're thrilled the world is catching on to the greatness at this generations-deep family estate.

If you haven't yet discovered the master of Meunier, the time is now! These bold non-vintage cuveés are IN STOCK.

The refined, powerful wines of Egly-Ouriet are the pinnacle of grower Champagne and reach their apogee in Ambonnay, in the cellars of winemaker Francis Egly. Profoundly sensual, and simply unforgettable. Born from older vines on the chalky soils of Montagne de Reims, these rare Champagnes are a must-have for those who cherish the character-rich promise and terroir purity of the best in grower Champagne.

We are proud to have been one of Egly's first importers in the United States and continue to hold these wines up as the true standard for grower Champagne. With each vintage, the thrill of Egly-Ouriet Champagne has only become more intense, and more exhilarating. The tang of sea salt, the mineral precision of oyster shells, the earthy, sensual complexity of old-vine Pinot Noir -- the finest in grower Champagne is basically grand cru Burgundy -- world-class wine that stands the test of time. Always limited and arriving SOON!

Since 2005 Michel Ecard has crafted the finest, most honest, and captivating Pinot Noirs from Savingy-lès-Beaune. His low-sulfur, balanced wines are not only deliciously complex but also age beautifully, a rare trait for such reasonably priced Burgundy.

Michel learned the trade by working with his father, Maurice, a highly respected artisan in Savigny who has since retired. Michel operates a micro-operation and you will find him in the cellar and vineyards, from field to bottle. His labor of love is truly felt with every sip!

His 2021s are inviting and IN STOCK NOW.

Just in time for cozy weather sipping! The 2021 Dumien-Serrette Cornas 'Henri' is a very special wine, a selection of the estate's oldest vines -- most of them pushing 100 years, if not more. It was named after Nicolas Serrette's grandfather Henri, who would have been 100 years old in 2013, the very first vintage of this wine.

'Henri' is Cornas at its most suave and bold -- black fruits, leather, autumn leaves, and tons of pepper. It is a serious insider's find in great Cornas; Nicolas makes barely a handful of barrels each vintage (which have their own special corner of the cellar in which to snooze!)

In 2021, Nicolas made literally two barrels of 'Henri' -- this is a rare treasure for lovers of true northern Syrah, from a vintage that will surprise with its energy and intensity.

Love Barolo? It's time to get yourself to Ghemme. Less than 100 miles north as the crow flies from Barolo, Ghemme is the heart of Alto Piemonte -- a northern region where Nebbiolo is rosy and refined, utterly enchanting, and seriously age-worthy. And the name you need to know in Ghemme is Tiziano Mazzoni.

The Mazzoni family -- Ghemme natives for generations -- farms some 11 acres within spitting distance of the snow-capped Alps; this is mountain-born Nebbiolo, full of mineral energy and high-altitude precision. Mazzoni is a serious insider's find in great Nebbiolo -- and the family's latest releases are now IN STOCK.

Organically raised and cultivated at the highest point of the Bandol appellation, this high-altitude, energetic red is now IN STOCK!

Lancelot-Royer is real hand-made grower Champagne. Since the early 1990s we've delighted in winemaker Michel Chauvet's pure Chardonnay wines from Cramant -- this is a micro domaine where riddling and bottling still happens by hand. A lost art that's not quite lost: Michel's son Edouard is now working with his dad to keep the family's passion alive.

Cramant's chalky, grand cru soils are expressed loud and clear in these limited wines. Their benchmark Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut 'Cuvée de Chevaliers' is seductive, and can age alongside the best vintage bottles. Love no dosage? Michel's Brut Nature is a thrilling wine with a serious mineral kick. Not to be missed is the family's 'Cuvée Dualissime' that highlights the terroir of grand cru villages Avize and Chouilly. And drum roll! The newly released 2015 Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru Brut Millésime is sheer refinement, a quintessential blanc de blancs with grace and poise and aged seven years on lees.

The holidays will be here before you know it ... these wines are IN STOCK NOW!

Welcome to North Berkeley Imports

Many wine lovers will tell you about “the” moment, where a casual interest in wine turned into an all-consuming passion. Perhaps it happened during a trip to the Italian coast, at a small restaurant where the local wine was a revelation; perhaps it was a shared bottle with a character so profound it turned upside-down everything you thought you knew about the transformation of grape into wine.

A great importer is the maker of moments. We are fortunate to be that crucial connection between the talented growers who toil the soil and the passionate individuals who applaud and respect their toil. In substance, we procure expressive, authentic wines and shepherd them to market; in spirit, we unite passions and palates across cultures and oceans. It just may be the best job in the world.

North Berkeley Imports wears three unique yet interconnected hats in the fine wine market. We are an importer first and foremost, with a distinct focus on wines from France and Italy. We are also a wholesaler with a national distribution network, our selections appearing in many of the country’s top restaurants and wine bars. We too are a retail store with a personable and professional sales staff, available six days a week to assist private customers across the country.
