Just last week, New York City had a Crozes-Hermitage hurricane run through town! Christelle Betton () hit the town hot with her gorgeous wines that wowed everyone we visited. This is real Northern Rhône Syrah, with cut and poise and juice for days; her pure Marsanne whites are a dream (but only a chosen few get to savour Christelle's very limited Hermitage Blanc 'Arpege.') What a wonderful visit and cooperation with our NY team, and thank you to all our clients who made Christelle and her wines feel welcomed. Christelle Betton's Crozes-Hermitage wines are IN STOCK in all our markets.

A whirlwind of meetings and tastings this past week! What a joy to catch Amelie & Charles Sparr () in Wettolsheim on the cusp of the holiday season, when Alsace comes alive with wintery festivities; and how utterly profound and delicious their wines are. This is the new Alsace, biodynamic and bone dry - Riesling with stone fruits and soul, Pinot Noir to put many a Burgundian to shame. A must-have, and in stock!

Then to the center to see Dominique Sirot of Fief Noir (), our newest partner in Anjou. This team is the biggest secret in Chenin Blanc right now, and they deserve their names in the brightest of lights. These wines have energy to their core, whether Chenin or Cab Franc or Grolleau or Pineau d'Aunis -- so much to discover here.

And to the far coast in Bordeaux to meet a serious winemaker and a fierce talent in Graves - when I grow up, I want to be as cool as winemaker Lou Rochet is right now. (Her pup, Spinoza, is also a genius.) Her unique, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Graves Rouge is way too good. Ask us for Château Janicon and thank us forever.

November in is foggy and cool and perfumed with Pinot Noir -- three great visits with our outstanding partners in the Cote de Nuits have made us even more excited about the 2023 vintage in barrel and the newly arrived 2022s in bottle. Winemakers Philippe and Paul Cheron of Domaine du Couvent are a dynamic father-son team with tons of talent, one of the newer domaines in Burgundy -- theirs are vibrant, expressive wines from impeccable, older-vine vineyards. Domaine Vigot's supple 2022s are on their way; one of their finest showings, these silky wines are gorgeous! And Fred Magnien never rests when it comes to capturing the most honest, transparent Pinot Noir -- his natural approach in fermentation and aging (with amphora, clay eggs and older barrel) means each organic selection absolutely sings. (And fun to find two bottles from decades back, marking the beginnings of our partnership (and OG logo, to boot). Vive Bourgogne!

Our Italian team is on the road -- let's join them on the lava-lively island of Sicily where our talented partner Mirella Buscemi crafts wild wines at dizzying altitudes on the northwest face of Mount Etna. As portfolio manager David Lynch () tells it, "To describe Mirella Buscemi’s 'Tartaraci' vineyard in one word: special. To describe it in more than one word: wild; historic; biodiverse (walnut, almond and olive trees share space with 90-year-old vines); organic; otherworldly."

The four-hectare 'Tartaraci' site technically falls a few kilometers outside the border of the Etna DOC, but these wines are Etnean through and through. The Il Bianco is an electrifying blend of Carricante and Grecanico; Mirella's 'Tartaraci' red combines Nerello Mascalese and, notably, Grenache -- a perfect marriage of the southern grape diaspora. It's so cool at these elevations that Mirella was still harvesting Nerello on November 4 ...

What a great week with Marco Ricasoli of Rocca di Montegrossi, the top of the top when it comes to organic Chianti Classico! We painted the town red in Vegas -- Sangiovese red, natch -- and then hit the mountains in Jackson, Wyoming to wine and dine at altitude. A huge thank you to the team at Glorietta's () for a stupendous, sold-out dinner; hats off to the team at Four Seasons' Handle Bar () for a fabulous steak frites lunch on a glorious Saturday afternoon; and another round on us for the team at SGWS Vegas for a truly great happy hour. We are so proud to be a partner to Rocca di Montegrossi now for so many years -- these soulful wines, from a peerless Chianti Classico to the award-winning Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Marcellino, from the grace and power of 'Geremia' to the intensity and age-ability of 'Ridolfo' in magnum (not to mention a decadent Vin Santo) -- every bottle is a winner. Grazie mille Marco!

What a wonderful week with Delphine Vesselle of Domaine Jean Vesselle Champagne! The great states of , and were ready to indulge and were we ever happy to share these grower Champagnes from Bouzy with distributor partners and clients alike. A huge thanks to Bad Idea Wine Bar () in Nashville (recently named to the NYT's Top 50 restaurants/bars in the USA list, natch) for a fantastic evening with Vesselle Champagne; and what a reception at Effervescence () in New Orleans, with lively conversation and pours of Oeil de Perdrix from magnum! Shout out to our friends at Prime, Lipman and Lirette for the support and a round of applause for the mistress of all things bubby in Bouzy, winemaker Delphine Vesselle. Thank you for sharing your outstanding grower Champagnes with us now and for so many years!

What a weekend and what a team! Thank you Del Mar Wine + Food Fest for a spectacular Italian aperitivo with our two favorite Italian experts and seriously talented humans, who between them have multiple James Beard awards and many, many other accolades. Our Italian Portfolio Manager David Lynch brought the heat (and the refreshment) with wines from Murgo (Etna), Cantine Olivella (Campania) and Caravaglio (Salina). Thank you Shelly Lindgren (check out her new book, Italian Wine) for a wonderful partnership! Let's do this again soon ...

This past spring we went to Alto Piemonte to visit the Mazzoni family in Ghemme -- and what a revelation! As prices climb like an agile mountain goat for the top names in Barolo, Alto Piemonte has become the spot for smart buyers looking for quality and value in Nebbiolo.

Mazzoni is the name those smart buyers should know! Here in Ghemme we're in the lap of the Alps, with high-altitude vineyards birthing riveting, mountain-kissed Nebbiolo. About 100 miles north from Barolo as the crow flies, Ghemme is winemaker Tiziano Mazzoni's home village, a place where he and his son have regrown their winemaking roots and are now crafting some of the region’s most vibrant and intriguing Nebbiolo wines.

These are bottles that can stand tall next to the finest from Barolo or Barbaresco, yet can be yours for outrageously reasonable prices. The family's Ghemme wines are stupendous; don't miss their Vespolina, a rare red grape from Alto Piemonte that is a delightful, chillable red for some serious poolside snacking this late summer.

You’re 2,000 feet above the Gulf of Naples, gazing at its calm azure waters while surrounded by ancient vines, on one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

The majesty of still-active Vesuvius is so compelling, however, that millions of people live and work in its shadow, close enough to tempt fate when it surely will blow again. A deep breath of sea air tinged with warm ash, slowly exhaled -- and you realize your destiny, your family’s vinous legacy, is worth all the risk.

Vesuvius native Ciro Giordano recently told us about that fateful moment when he knew it was time to create Cantine Olivella -- our newest partners in Campania, and one of the most exciting winemaking estates in all of southern Italy right now.

The extraordinary, rare creations from this unique winery speak with a single voice, loud and clear and soulful like the baritone of Vesuvius.

Wines that triumph white grapes like Catalanesca, brought to the region in the 15th century and currently only planted on the slopes of Vesuvius. Ungrafted and uncommon varieties like Caprettone and red grapes such as Piedirosso and Olivella have long been part of the family’s agricultural wealth.

You do not know volcanic wines until you've sampled these amazing bottles -- and they're IN STOCK!

Need a shot-in-the-arm, serious jolt of energy? Christelle Betton provides. The queen of Crozes-Hermitage (her chariot's a cargo bike, natch), Christelle infuses northern Rhone native grapes with a vibrancy that will make you want to dance all night long. ‘Espiègle’ is pure Syrah with 100% mischievous intentions; 'Caprice,' with its older vine intensity, delivers the bright and peppery flavors of northern Syrah with elan. To the whites, her 'Elixir' lives its name, a silky Marsanne that revitalizes; and 'Arpege,' heavenly music from the top of Hermitage, a bottle of liquid gold (and allocated to the drop). Christelle's latest releases are now IN STOCK and are they ever delicious.

Grab a glass and come with us to the vine-covered hills in Lucca near Tuscany’s western coast, where winemakers Moreno Petrini and Laura Collobiano have been working vinous magic for more than two decades. Tenuta di Valgiano is an enchanted, award-winning address for peerless red and white wines that continue to enamor and astonish the world’s most experienced palates. Here balance and elegance are the spirits that make everything move -- the aromatic pine trees, the verdant vines, the delicious wines in glasses so easily emptied (and refilled by generous hosts). We are loving the 2018 Colline Lucchesi Rosso right now, a "big, potent" wine (says Vinous) with nature writ large in each sip, and savory pleasure equally so.

Welcome to North Berkeley Imports

Many wine lovers will tell you about “the” moment, where a casual interest in wine turned into an all-consuming passion. Perhaps it happened during a trip to the Italian coast, at a small restaurant where the local wine was a revelation; perhaps it was a shared bottle with a character so profound it turned upside-down everything you thought you knew about the transformation of grape into wine.

A great importer is the maker of moments. We are fortunate to be that crucial connection between the talented growers who toil the soil and the passionate individuals who applaud and respect their toil. In substance, we procure expressive, authentic wines and shepherd them to market; in spirit, we unite passions and palates across cultures and oceans. It just may be the best job in the world.

North Berkeley Imports wears three unique yet interconnected hats in the fine wine market. We are an importer first and foremost, with a distinct focus on wines from France and Italy. We are also a wholesaler with a national distribution network, our selections appearing in many of the country’s top restaurants and wine bars. We too are a retail store with a personable and professional sales staff, available six days a week to assist private customers across the country.
