Some cocktails benefit from homemade or authentic ingredients. The Scofflaw Cocktail is one that really shines with a good grenadine. Grenadine is a pomegranate syrup that is easy to make at home and doesn’t at all taste like the red corn syrup ‘grenadine’ you might find at the store.
Scofflaw Cocktail
2oz. Rye Whiskey
1oz. Dry Vermouth
3/4oz. Grenadine
3/4oz. Lemon Juice
2 dashes Dr. I.J. Douglass’s Orange Bitters
Time for Café Brûlot
For 8:
1-1/2 cups Brandy
1/4 cup Curaçao
24 dashes of Dr. I.J. Douglass’s West Indian Lime Bitters
6 cups of hot coffee
———
2 Cinnamon Sticks
1 Orange, half peeled
Peel of one Lemon
10 cloves
2 Tablespoons Sugar
Fire Extinguisher
———
Prepare:
Half peel the orange, leaving the rind attached. Insert cloves into peel. Divide lemon peel into 10 pieces.
In a skillet heat brandy, curaçao, bitters, cinnamon sticks and two lemon peel pieces to a simmer.
Place the orange on a long fork or similar instrument so that it can be held away from the body and hand.
Assemble:
Remove the skillet from heat, place the orange in the liquid and squeeze out the juice. Scoop out some of the liquid into a ladle. Light the ladle on fire... be careful, have a spotter and extinguisher ready. Lift the orange out of the skillet and pour flaming liquid down the spiral peel. Repeat several times.
Place the orange back in the liquid and pour the coffee into the skillet to extinguish the flames. Remove the orange.
Pour sugar of the top of the liquid and stir with the ladle.
In each mug place one slice of lemon peel and ladle cocktail into the mug. Cheers!
