Someone came up to the register the other day and asked, "Do you know the story behind Uncle Nearest?" I didn't, and I bet some of you don't either!
"Uncle Nearest" was the nickname given to Nathan Green, a formerly enslaved Black man who distilled whiskey outside of Lynchburg, TN. He was the *master* of Tennesee whiskey, and even taught Jack Daniels the tricks of the trade. However, he long went uncredited for his work... that is until Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey was launched in 2016, named in his honor. It's Black woman-owned and operated -- in fact, the master blender is Nearest's great-great-granddaughter, Victoria Eady! The company is passionate about investing in minority entrepreneurs in the industry. Pretty cool stuff. Pick up some Uncle Nearest next time you're in the store!

“No es pituko” means “it ain’t fancy,” and that’s our favorite thing about this natural Viognier. A perfect introduction to natural wine, it’s just funky enough without being “too much.” It has just enough remaining sediment to give it a silky mouthfeel that filtered wines just can’t give you. Bright and zippy, full of apricot and pear notes. Sustainably farmed grapes, naturally fermented with yeasts present on the grapes themselves. No added yeasts, bacteria, sulphur, sugar, or acid adjustments.

Nothing like elderflower liqueur to make you feel like a regular at-home mixologist! Give St. Elder a shot to *mix it up* (pun intended 🤪). We also love to mix with the beautiful Ornamental Gin from , made in Providence! It strikes a unique balance of floral and spicy that makes it a great choice for this cocktail. Toss some lavender syrup from and you're good to go!
Note that the egg white or aquafaba (chickpea water, often used to replace eggs in vegan recipes) are optional additions, but they add a lovely, silky foam that really elevates the whoooole experience. Highly recommend. 💯

We got a special visitor this week! Peter Andrews was G&G's first wine, spirits and beer buyer. When he joined the start-up In 2012 he was a recent graduate of JWU beverage program. Peter rocked the launch of G&G with his passion and knowledge. When he left in 2014 he moved to San Francisco and has built an amazing life for himself in the wine industry, now the owner of Culture Wine Co., an importer of South African wines. Matt says, "It was amazing to catch up and revisit the growing pains of a new small business. Even better to see and hear Neil and Peter geek out on G&G amazing selection of small-batch wines!"

Where are my Basque friends at??? We're pleased to carry two beautiful Basque wines from . If you've never had Txakolina, you're in for a treat -- light, dry, and floral with a refreshing acidity and a slight sparkle. It is best served chilled and is traditionally poured from a height so that its flavors and aromas are on full display as it splashes into the glass. It's a lot of fun -- give it a try! Maybe the can help us out...

A new month means a new giveback wine! This month we will be donating 10% of sales of our recent arrival, Haimer Grüner Veltliner, to the East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP). Check out their page to see what they're all about!

About the wine, Neil says, "We're pleased as punch with the number of clientele who have been requesting Grüner Veltliner from us, but we've been trying to convince people to try this grape for years! It's easy to see why -- being the unofficial white table wine of Austria, Grüner is best known for its versatility with cuisine. People often find tones of green apple or dry peach, but this bottle meets halfway with notes of white nectarine and gooseberry. A crisp, mineral-forward finish makes this an instant classic. Better yet, not only is this a one-liter bottle, but we will be donating 10% of the proceeds to a local nonprofit! Prost!"
