Calmont Beverage Fine Wines

Calmont Beverage Fine Wines For over 70 years, Calmont Beverage has provided Vermonters the finest wines. We stock over 2,000 selections of wine and represent more than 200 brands of beer.

Calmont Beverage Company was founded and started in 1941 by Silvio and Nevio Semprebon along with Gino Berini. To slack the thirst of Vermont’s unique community of Italian granite quarry workers, the brothers brought barreled California wine to Vermont, via rail, and bottled it here under the Calmont brand name (a contraction of California / Vermont). With the birth and growth of the ski industry

after the World War II, Calmont shifted to distribution of fine wines from Europe, New York and California. The 1980’s were a time of great opportunity and expansion at Calmont as we transitioned from a small regional Vermont distributor to one that serviced the whole state. This expansion was fueled by market demand for the new “boutique” wineries of California and a greater interest in fine wine in general. In the early 80s we started representing small artisan California wine producers such as Mount Eden, Kistler, Calera, Ravenswood, Sonoma-Cutrer, Clos du Val, Matanzas Creek and Markham where a young winemaker named Bob Foley was cutting this teeth. In 1998 we merged Warner Distributing into our company and Christine Warner stayed on with us for the next two years to help further develop her. She then moved on to work for Rudi and was our rep from that firm for several more years. She is personally responsible for making Riesling lovers out of many of our customers and us. Forward to 2004, working with suppliers like Vias, Dalla Terra and others, and then broad-based direct importing led Calmont Beverage to become a market leader capitalizing on a tremendous string of high-quality wines beginning with the 2001 vintage of Baroli, Barbareschi & Brunelli which launched our modern day direct-import endeavors selling these great wines by the pallet-load. Now in our 70th year of business Calmont Beverage is run by Silvio Semprebon’s grandchildren. While we are perhaps best known for our broad selection of limited production artisan wines sold primarily to the restaurant, hotel and specialty food and wine shop trade, we also proudly represent a full range of carefully selected, larger production brands targeted to Vermont’s chain grocery and convenience stores for which we have a dedicated merchandizing and sales support staff. Our goal is to provide each of our customers with outstanding, knowledgeable service and a great selection of fine wines and beers. We are proud of our supplier partners. Like us, most are small family owned firms. We know they appreciate our prompt payment policy and the representation they get here in Vermont. By the way, we still represent Louis Latour and hope to do so for another 65 years.

Repost Tasca d'Almerita
Very honoured that has assigned the acclaimed 2024 to our Ghiaia Nera 2021 from Tascante, a wine that represents the Volcano and its iconic grape 🍇🌋

On the slopes of Etna, on a land where Nature manifests its strength in a pure and primordial way, Ghiaia Nera finds its roots. The wine is made from Nerello Mascalese grapes, grown on volcanic soil, on terraces surrounded by chestnut and oak woodlands, surrounded by a majestic landscape made of lava deposits.

Many discussions about terroir omit one crucial element: the human labor that discovers and nurtures it. Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz of Nin-Ortiz embody this belief in everything they do, from the hard manual work and biodynamic practices that have revitalized their vineyards to their humble and sensitive practices in the cellar. Grounded, expressive, generous, and balanced describe both their thrilling wines and the nature of Ester and Carles themselves.

VinePair’s Robert Hayes Peterson features Cleto Chiarli in

The Best Ways to Pair Summer Food With Italian Lambrusco

“Summer’s here! That means beaches, pools, picnics, travel, boats, street fairs, and backyard parties. All of that activity requires our favorite warm-weather foods, from light bites to rich, deep-fried fare.

It also means setting aside the heavy red wines and brown spirits for something bubbly and refreshing. And while beer, rosés, or Prosecco might be your go-to, did you know there’s a refreshing sparkling red that matches summer’s vibe perfectly? It’s called Lambrusco, and Cleto Chiarli is here to help pair your summer menus with Lambrusco.”

Brittan Vineyards

For many years I have admired the wines by Robert Brittan, former winemaker at Stags’ Leap Winery in Napa. Robert is a graduate of the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology program and founded Brittan Vineyards in 2004, acquiring a 128-acre hillside property with soils that are a mixture of glacial deposits and volcanic material, with a predominant presence of broken basalt.
I love terroir in the glass and this stony material brings out wonderful rocky tones in the wines that he makes, making them truly novel to the region. In addition to the Pinot Noir, Robert has 4 acres of Chardonnay and 1.5 acres of Syrah have been planted. In addition to his own wines, Robert serves as the winemaker for several other brands, including Blakeslee, de Lancellotti, Fairsing, Noble Pig, Winderlea and Youngberg Hill.
I adored the new 2021 Brittan Vineyards ‘Estate’ Chardonnay (OB, 94) which shows seriously good richness and stony character. I am not enamored by Willamette Valley Syrah by any means but this new 2018 Brittan ‘Estate’ Syrah (OB, 93) is up there with the finest that I have ever tasted from the valley. This is not lean and herbal but has great stuffing and varietal character, with a stony essence. Finally, the coup de gras in their lineup is one of the outstanding wines from Oregon that I have tasted all year. The 2016 Brittan Vineyards ‘Puncheon’ Pinot Noir (OB, 96) is a wine that was aged significantly in barrel. It is round, generous and utterly fabulous with its seamless texture and marvelous weight and length. Learn more about the great wines of Brittan Vineyards at http://www.brittanvineyards.com Here are the brilliant releases by Brittan Vineyards.

2021 Brittan Vineyards ‘Estate’ Chardonnay- The outstanding 2021 Brittan Vineyards Chardonnay comes from their estate vineyard in the McMinnville AVA. This comes off wonderfully stony with wet rock character alongside yellow plum, mango and shades of Pink Lady apple on the palate. Really good now, showing good length, weight and underlying tension, enjoy over the next eight to ten years. Drink 2023-2033- 94

2018 Brittan Vineyads ‘Estate’ Syrah- This is not your typical Syrah from Oregon, as this was sourced from a warm vintage in the Willamette Valley. Showing a dark core, this reveals a dusting of white pepper alongside brisket, dark cherry and shades of licorice on the nose. The palate is fresh and fragrant with a soft mouthfeel and loads of dark fruits with bright acidity and stony character. This is one of the great Willamette Valley Syrahs I have ever tasted. Drink 2023-2030- 93

2016 Brittan Vineyards ‘Puncheon’ Pinot Noir- The 2016 ‘Puncheon’ is a single barrel bottling made from Robert Britain’s Estate Vineyard in the McMinnville AVA. It is one of the great Pinot Noirs that I have tasted in the past year out of Oregon. The nose comes off sensationally well with red currants, to***co leaf, freshly tilled rocky soils and shades of cardamom. The palate is silky and downright ethereal with serious length and a finish that just won’t quit. This wonderfully displays the rocky profile of this site, with salty undertones an an ebullient core of bright and tart red fruits. A world-class wine, enjoy this beauty now and over the next ten plus years. Drink 2023-2033- 96

At the western-most edge of Alto Piemonte sits Canavese, home to one of Italy’s most alluring and rare white grapes, Erbaluce.
