Flashback to Lauren’s Burgundy visit in April - here with winemaker Hélène Michaut of Domaine du Clos des Poulettes, an under the radar producer located in Corgoloin.
Hélène is a 7th generation winemaker, and upon taking over endeavored to change course from her father’s goal of intense extraction and tannin (slower to evolve in bottle) to a lighter, brighter, more accessible style. Her chosen production methods are subtle yet precise (a little like Hélène herself), encouraging softer extraction in temperature-controlled stainless steel.
This is lucky for us because her wines are approachable and enjoyable in their youth. Currently in the shop we have two of her Côte de Nuits Villages bottlings:
🐓 2020 Côte de Nuits Villages Blanc En Beauregard - floral (lily, magnolia) meets juicy fruit (yellow plum, golden delicious apple) - $29.99 on sale
🐓 2019 Côte de Nuits Villages Rouge Vierville - boisterous fruit balanced by nuance, black cherry, cassis, cinnamon & clove, forest floor - $39.99

Galets roulés Everywhere All at Once 🪨 👀 🪨 👀
A hallmark of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Southern Rhône are these round stones - galets roulés - that are the result of ancient glacial movements and deposits from the Rhône River. They retain and release heat well - absorbing the plentiful daytime sun and dispersing it to the vines at night aiding in ripening. They also protect the soil from erosion and the notorious Mistral (the region’s strong, persistent winds).

A glimpse into the Mâconnais...
Born into a family of vignerons, Marie-Pierre Manciat carries the terroir torch as the 5th generation at the estate and is now joined by her daughter Salomé (whose work will first be experienced through the release of the 2022 vintage… spoiler alert: tank samples were fantastic). Bottled under the name “Claude Manciat” in the US market as homage to Marie-Pierre’s father, the common thread of these quality driven wines is honesty, refreshment and drinkability that makes for an easy-drinking glass to raise and toast to talented women.
Lauren is traveling in France this week visiting producers in Champagne, Chablis, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais, Beaujolais, and Southern Rhône - a humbling experience that is a reminder of how important the connection is between what’s in your glass and the earth, vines, growers, winemakers, and families that make it all possible and worthwhile. More highlights and vineyard/winery critters to come (and wine… there will be wine).

Rosé is a whole spectrum of shades, flavors and textures and it has arrived!
What makes a rosé a rosé? Why are they so delicious and food friendly, and how are they made? A logical start to answering these questions brings us to France, as one might expect! The concept of French rosé understandably conjures images of Provençal, pale pink hues (and for some reason seersucker)...but we’re taking our scavenger hunt of rosé styles elsewhere, to a few other regions. Come by the shop this Saturday (4/1) between 2PM-4PM to sample three different French rosés highlighting stylistic diversity between regions. We will be tasting bottles from Tavel, Anjou, and Bordeaux.
