Burgundies On A Budget

> 2022 Saint-Véran Clos de l'Ermitage Saint Claude Vieilles Vignes Thevenet & Fils
> 2023 Bourgogne Côte d'Or Chardonnay Paul Pernot et ses Fils

TASTING INFO:
Ahhh, Burgundy! The birthplace of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay and as many would say, the pinnacle of expression of Terroir or “sense of place.” The soil, sun, weather, millenia of winemaking history and practices come together here to express themselves through these impressionable grape varietals. With careful cellaring and time, Burgundies can become transcendent. Recent vintages have been challenged due to changing weather patterns and coupled with strong demand, prices have gone up. But our wine director is always hard at work to find good values for you - we’d love to introduce you to four of our current favorites, all delickous and easy on the wallet. Click the MORE INFO link below to learn more and watch this space for details on our upcoming tastings! Like / Follow / Share with friends! We're open 10AM-6:30PM Monday-Saturday.

PS - We’d love to see you at our NEW MIDTOWN LOCATION at Jefferson Square (1601 W 38th, Unit #3) - next door to Anderson’s Coffee in Rosedale. Save the planet - two errands (coffee & wine) in one stop! We’re open Monday through Saturday 10AM to 6:30PM! And tell your friends… :)

TASTING INFO:
C’mon downtown this Friday as we welcome Alberto Varela, Co-Founder of Sotol Parejo and offer a taste of three of their fine Sotols! Unlike Mezcal or Tequila made from agave, Sotol is a DO-protected spirit made in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Durango from species of Dasylirion wheeleri of desert sotols’ flower stalk, produced every 5-7 years. For many decades, Sotol Maestros (master distillers) and Vinatas (distilleries) struggled for recognition from the Mexican government. Sotol Parejo (which is the word used by Maestros to indicate that a Sotol is “perfect”) was founded 13 years ago to respect the distiller and recapture the endangered historical practices and the art of making a fine Sotol. This week, we’re highlighting the Sancerre Blanc by Henri Bourgeois as our wine of the week. Grown on flinty clays and limestone located on the hills between Chavignol and Sancerre, this wine is wonderfully refreshing and crisp, with a lingering minerality.
It pairs excellently with fish, salads, goat cheese and poultry. Available for $29.99. Stop by and pick up a bottle at our downtown flagship store at 512 W.6th or at our second location at 1601 W.38th Street. Cheers Lucinda

SATURDAY WINE TASTING: Join us downtown Sat 22 Mar 2025 NOON-3PM for a taste of five wines from France, Italy & Portugal!

WINE MENU:

Five of our faves (rouge, rosso & tinto) from France, Italy and Portugal

Gentlemen, please, no cologne or after shave; ladies, please no perfume!

TASTING INFO:
C’mon downtown tomorrow (Saturday 22 March) as we introduce your palates to five of our favorite red wines from France, Italy and Portugal. We’ll start with our Owner / Wine Directors “everyday” red, a dry red blend from the Douro region of Portugal, then journey eastward to the Côtes-du-Rhône for a juicy yet crisp GSM blend (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvédre). From southern France, we’ll head due east to Piemonte for a lovely, light on its feet Nebbiolo from the Langhe, head on down to Sicily to the volcanic sloped vineyards of Mt. Etna and wrap up in central Italy in Tuscany with a Chianti Classico Riserva. All five come from very different terroirs - check out the photos of the round Galets of the Rhône, the “lava rock” of Mt. Etna and the clay-limestone soils of Chianti below. They offer medium to medium-plus body backed up by good acidity, do not see any new oak (ask us why this is important in allergy season) and offer great value! TASTING INFO:
Do you love Champagne? Need more bubbles in your life these days but want to watch your wallet? C’mon downtown and let us introduce you to your new best ami (friend) - Crémant! Crémants are French sparkling wine from regions other than Champagne made in the same method. Méthode Champenoise (stipulated in the Crémant AOP) specifies the secondary fermentation to create the bubbles is done in the final bottle and at least nine months of resting on the lees (dead yeast cells left after fermentation) for more depth / richer mouthfeel. Crémants feature the grapes of their region - the “de” (or “of”) tells you where the grapes are cultivated. We’ll be tasting Crémants from Burgundy (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sometimes Aligoté), Alsace (Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc/Gris among others) and the Loire (Pinot Noir, Chenin Blanc and sometimes Cabernet Franc). C’mon downtown to grab a taste of these four fine wines! SATURDAY WINE TASTING: Join us downtown Sat 08 Mar 2025 NOON-3PM as we journey by way of wine to the Languedoc in southern France!

WINE MENU:
SOUTH OF FRANCE FAVORITES, LANGUEDOC EDITION

> 2021 Languedoc Blanc Cuvée Aupilhac Domaine d'Aupilhac
> 2022 Corbières Rouge Domaine de Fontsainte
> 2022 Corbières Rouge Domaine Faillenc Sainte-Marie
> 2020 Minervois La Livinière La Touge Château Maris

Gentlemen, please, no cologne or after shave; ladies, please no perfume!

TASTING INFO:
La langue d'Òc in the old Occitan language translates to « the language of yes ». The Languedoc wine region in south-central to southwest France (still) offers great value in blends - the reds mostly composed of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault (Syrah seems to lead a bit more here than in the Côtes-du-Rhône). The whites are unoaked and zesty, usually composed of Picpoul and Grenache Blanc. And did you know it’s THE birthplace of sparkling wine (Blanauette de Limoux)? It’s a mediterranean climate, warm, breezy and arid. Most of the vineyards in the Languedoc region lie on low, coastal plains rich in limestone and are surrounded by the scrubby garrigue (rosemary, thyme, sage, lavender, and juniper) vegetation also found in the Rhône and Provence. The persistent dry breezes help keep disease pressure down and allows a majority of wineries to be certified fully organic. C’mon downtown to grab a taste of these four fine wines! WEDNESDAY WINE TASTING: Join us today, Wed 05 Mar 2025 4:00PM-6:00PM to taste and learn about the “Champagne of Italy” - Franciacorta!

> Franciacorta Ca'del Bosco Extra Brut Cuvée Prestige Rosé

Gentlemen, please, no cologne or after shave; ladies, please no perfume!

TASTING INFO:
Please join us downtown today (Wednesday 05 Mar 2025, 4:00PM-6:00PM) as we offer a taste of three superb sparkling wines from Ca'del Bosco in Italy’s premier region - Franciacorta! Often called “The Champagne of Italy”, this DOCG in the region of Lombardy around the Commune of Brescia is young - created in 1967 and elevated to DOCG status in 1995. It features just 3 grapes - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a touch of Pinot Blanc may be used, the secondary fermentation to create the bubbles must be done in the bottle and there are minimum aging requirements on the lees or dead yeasts from the alcoholic fermentation. These traditional Champagne methods (called Metodo Classico in Italy) impart a finer perlage (bubbles), character (secondary aromas and flavors) and quality. C’mon downtown and give these three bubblies from Ca'del Bosco a try! SATURDAY WINE TASTING: Join us downtown Sat 01 Mar 2025 NOON-3PM as we explore the Dão region of Portugal with four delicious wines from Quinta das Marias!

WINE MENU:
QUINTA DAS MARIAS, DÃO, PORTUGAL

> 2023 Dão Branco Encruzado Quinta das Marias
> 2020 Dão Tinto Lote Quinta das Marias
> 2019 Dão Tinto Reserva Cuvée TT Quinta das Marias
> 2020 Dão Tinto Alfrocheiro Quinta das Marias

Gentlemen, please, no cologne or after shave; ladies, please no perfume!

TASTING INFO:
While our Our Owner/Wine Director’s “wine heart” might lie in Burgundy, he’s been a passionate ambassador for the wines (and Ports) of Portugal for many years, educating our clientele on the great value and quality of their dry wines. Portugal’s variety of indigenous grape species rivals that of Italy, and the wines of the Dão offer a lighter contrast to the brooding wines of the Douro, where Port is made. Quinta das Marias was established in 1991 by Elisabeth and Peter Eckert, who focused on cultivating wines in the Dão focused solely on grape varietals from that region with the highest quality. C’mon downtown and give these four a taste - John says he feels the NEW 2023 vintage of their white rivals that of a fine Burgundy! And also learn how to pronounce some new grape varietals such as “Encruzado” and “Alfrocheiro.”

SATURDAY WINE TASTING: Join us Sat 22 Feb 2025 NOON-3PM at the downtown shop as we taste four warming Côtes-du-Rhône wines!

WINE MENU:
THE WARMING, GENEROUS RED WINES OF THE SOUTHERN CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE

> 2023 Côtes-du-Rhône Cuvée Sommelongue André Brunel
> 2022 Côtes-du-Rhône La Muse Papilles Montirius
> 2021 Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages Vieilles Vignes Domaine Roger Perrin
> 2021 Côtes-du-Rhône lieu-dit Clavin Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

Gentlemen, please, no cologne or after shave; ladies, please no perfume!

TASTING INFO:
History shows the Greeks started viticulture in southern France in the 4th century, but it was the Romans who started to cultivate grapes in the Rhône as they used the Rhône river to transit northward from its mouth west of Marseille. Unlike their northern Rhône counterparts which are exclusively Syrah, Côtes-du-Rhône wines are usually Grenache-focused with a smaller portion of Syrah and sometimes a splash Cinsault or Mourvèdre. These vines bask in the warmer, drier climate of the southern Rhône valley, the influence of “Le Mistral” (frequent strong warm winds) and Garrigue - the aromas of resinous scrubby vegetation such as wild lavender, thyme and rosemary amongst others - that thrive in the limestone-rich soil in the dry heat. C’mon downtown and taste what these wines have to offer - easy drinking, juicy, medium-plus to full body reds. And don’t forget to ask what “biodynamic viticulture” means! Please join us downtown tomorrow (Friday 21 February, 4PM-6PM) as we welcome Mark Vlossak, Founder / Winemaker / President of St. Innocent Winery in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon! Mark had an unusual upbringing with a wine educator/importer father and a mother trained under a master chef. His life often included wine-paired meals - and thus together, his parents instilled in him the beauty of how wine and food elevate each other! Mark opened St. Innocent Winery in the Willamette Valley in 1988 and quickly established himself as one of the premier winemakers in the area, finding sites that had potential to produce wines with a true sense of place - such as Shea, Momtazi and Freedom Hill Vineyards. His first estate vineyard (Enchanted Way) was planted in 2018 and his first estate vintage was bottled in 2023. Today, his winery remains a family affair - Mark is truly “rooted” in Oregon and his decades-long knowledge and passion for Oregon wine shows! C’mon downtown tomorrow (Wednesday 19 February, 3:30PM-5:30PM) as we welcome Jesse Falowitz, Co-Founder and Certified Shochu Advisor from Mizu Shochu in Japan! Japanese Shochu (not to be confused with Korean Soju) is a distilled spirit made from barley and/or rice that is fermented with koji yeast (Aspergillus oryzae - used also to make sake, soy sauce, mirin and other Japanese staples). Koji is known for imparting unique umami flavors in the process and Mizu only uses a careful single pass of distillation and no dillution of the spirit (70 ABV) to retain those unique characteristics. Mizu also infuses flavors by adding ingredients such as lemongrass and green tea to the mash during fermentation or using special casks made of native Japanese cherry wood. TASTING INFO:
C’mon downtown as we welcome Catherine White, National Sales Manager to the store and introduce you to the fine Santa Barbara County wines of Gainey Vineyard! Gainey is a 4th-generation family affair - formed some 60 years ago when the family purchased an 1800-acre “Home Ranch” as a farm. In the mid-80s, they converted 50 acres to vine and their winemaking began. Their areas under vine have grown from one vineyard to three - spanning the valley that runs from the warmer side near Santa Ynez towards the cooling Pacific Ocean at Lompoc. The vineyards offer up a different exposure angles and a variety of loamy soil (gravel, shale, clay and sand). Gainey was one of the Pioneers in the Santa Barbara revolution and they’ve followed sustainable farming - cover crops, compost and organic amendments. Please join us for a taste of two each of Gainey’s whites and reds. Please join us as we welcome WildGins to the shop and offer a taste of two unique Texas Gins! Gin originally hails from the Netherlands, grew its stature in Britain and almost exclusively uses the native European Common Juniper tree berry as the center of its flavor. Molly Cummings, a University of Texas Biology professor and her siblings, a family of distillers sought to create a unique American gin. They found the heart of that spirit in the Davis Mountains in West Texas, about 100 miles north of Big Bend National Park. Eight unique species of Juniper grow in Texas and several species thrive in the volcanic soils and higher elevations of the Davis Mountains. Molly found her winning berries in the rare Red Berry Juniper, used in her WildJune Western Style Gin and the Alligator Juniper used in her WildBark West Texas Dry Gin. She and the WildJune team hand-forage their berries in the Davis Mountains and are expressing the terroir of each tree they harvest and infuse from by naming and noting the tree on each bottle. C’mon downtown to taste these unique Texas Gins and learn about “Fertile Myrtle”! Click the MORE INFO link below for details and watch this space for more wine tasting details.
