C’mon downtown today as we offer up a taste of four fine southern Rhône wines from Domaine de la Vielle Julienne - perfect to pair with your warming, savory dishes or warm your soul as we weather the coming chill…From the Domaine:

“On the heights of « Clavin » and at the northern limit of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne dates from the 17th century. Today, 20 hectares of vineyard yield three different cuvées of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape Rouge and an exceptional Côtes‑du‑Rhône Rouge and Blanc. The north‑facing terroir of slopes and its special microclimate gives this location a special ability, well‑adapted to the extreme current climatic conditions of the southern Rhône Valley and producing singular, harmonious and balanced wines. ​All the traditional and original grape varieties are selected, reproduced and co‑planted (with the different grape varieties mixed in the same plot). Entirely manual harvests allow for a first selection in the vineyard and a second selection when the grapes (transported in small boxes) arrive at the winery. Vinification is traditional and the fermentations are natural, without any additions. The natural yeasts on the bunches of grapes reveal both singularity of each terroir and of the vintage. Following a long and slow fermentation, the wines are decanted into foudre (large oak barrels). Then, after 18 months aging, the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. All of the wines are Demeter© certified biodynamically‑farmed.”

C’mon downtown today as we offer up a taste of four fine reds from one of the crown jewels of Bordeaux - Saint-Émilion! In this region of Bordeaux, Merlot normally is at the front of the stage. In the words of our Owner / Wine Director, John Roenigk:

“The late great Frank Schoonmaker writing of Saint‑Émilion in his seminal Encyclopedia Of Wine (first published in 1964), called them "sturdy, warm, generous, wholly agreeable clarets, pleasing even when young, and attractive even when not « great »; they have been called « the Burgundies of the Bordeaux Country »". Nowadays, in our humble estimation, the wines are even better. And, given the Merlot grape and its well‑known affinity for the clay/limestone soils there, well, Saints be praised. Warm and generous, subtly fleshy and seductive, the Burgundies of Bordeaux, indeed. And, given the paucity of red Burgundy available at a reasonable price in the current climate/market, Saint‑Émilion will also, for many, represent a relative value in fine, red wine.”

We’ll start with a sparkling Brut Vermentino, offer up a herbaceous and zippy still Vernaccia from San Gimignano and then move into three Sangiovese-focused wines. We’ll start in Chianti Colli Senesi where valley floor, clay-rich soils offer a softer expression of Sangiovese, then offer a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione (a relatively new DOCG designation that is the “pinnacle” of Sangiovese - all estate fruit, at least 80% Sangiovese, minimum 30 months of aging). Finally, we will wrap with a “Super Tuscan” that skirts the Italian wine DOC regulations for a premium expression of the best the winemaker feels they grow in Tuscany. This meticulous process results in unique aromas, intense body, and a lot of character. TASTING INFO:
There’s a bit of a fresh fall nip in the air today! And the blended reds of the Rhône are perfect to accompany your fall and holiday savory meats, stews and roasted dishes. The Domaine of Roger Perrin has been under vine since the very early 1900s and has passed through several generations of family winemakers. They’ve worked hard to stay true to traditional winemaking practices - hand harvesting, stainless steel fermentation (to keep freshness) and a judicious touch of whole cluster fermentation (for just the right amount of spicy, stemmy flavors/aromas characteristic of the Rhône). Châteauneuf level wines see some exposure to seasoned large format oak, and perhaps a touch of small format barrique when needed. Here, the galets roules (large, rounded river rock) is ever-present in the vineyard, causing the vine to concentrate its fruit and reflecting the sun/heat back up onto the vine during cool periods. Kástra Elión is a three generation, family-owned distillery creating a unique Mediterranean vodka distilled from Greek olives picked by hand, then blended with curated grains and natural spring water from crystalline rock. The distillery is named after the ancient castle that stands guard over the hills and olive groves of Nafpaktos and exhibits the Mediterranean in a glass - full bodied, refined with a subtle salinity and a smooth, buttery finish.
