Kandiyohi County and City of Willmar Economic Development Commission’s (EDC) CARES Pandemic Relief (CPR) Grant Program is in action helping area businesses and nonprofits.
The EDC began accepting applications on Tuesday, July 28. To date, 118 applications have been received from 94 business applicants and 24 nonprofit organizations.
“It has been interesting to see the variety of types of businesses that have applied. We’ve seen applications from barbers, salons, restaurants, service industries, hospitality, health and fitness, retail, and manufacturing/construction,” said Aaron Backman, EDC Director.
Kandiyohi County’s Board of Commissioners has already approved over $700,000 in CPR grants to 38 businesses and 10 nonprofits, with another 48 applications approved by the EDC that are pending county approval. In addition, another 22 business/nonprofit applications are in process or being evaluated. “It is so rewarding to be able to offer this relief at such a critical time for our businesses and nonprofits,” said Connie Schmoll with the EDC. “I’ve hand-delivered some of the funds. These businesses are extremely grateful for some much-needed relief during these challenging times.”
According to Backman, the businesses that have received funds to date average 7.5 years in business and represent nearly 167 full-time equivalent jobs. They’ve also seen significant loss in revenue. “The average loss of these businesses is 57 percent, with some businesses seeing a loss as high as 100 percent during the second quarter of 2020,” said Backman.
Nonprofits in Kandiyohi County are also benefiting from CPR grants, “Our mainstay nonprofits providing social assistance, etc. have seen significant losses as well, averaging 48 percent in lost revenue during quarter 2 of 2020.” said Schmoll. “We sometimes forget that nonprofits are employers. Those awarded so far represent 172 jobs, averaging 17 employees at each nonprofit.”
CPR grants continue to be open to Kandiyohi County businesses and nonprofit organizations with a physical location in Kandiyohi County that have experienced reduced revenue due to COVID-19. Businesses may request up to $15,000 and must apply by October 29, 2020. Nonprofits may request up to $50,000 by October 23, 2020. Actual grant funds awarded will be based on a number of key factors as outlined in the application forms.
“We strongly encourage submitting your application soon. We only have a few months to distribute limited grant funds and want to help as many of our businesses and nonprofits in need as possible,” said EDC Director, Aaron Backman.
Funding for the program comes from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. All told, the EDC anticipates allocating over $2.5 million to aid Kandiyohi County businesses and nonprofits with hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic.
