Picking with the Boys

A big thank you to The Boys and their guest pickers and chef Kyla for the day.

We had 15 barrels in the store last year and it is looking like we are headed to be in that neighborhood this year. We have had 5 barrels already this year. We have customers who come from as far away as Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha and Kansas City for our barrel picks. The Picking Boys are on a roll and are very particular in what they pick.

We screened a bunch of barrels to find a very nice set for The Boys to sample. It was sample Saturday and it was a full day. I was prepared for them to pick 5+ barrels and they found 3 that were what our customers would expect from us to bring in:

Elijah Craig 9 year that they blinded against a big selection of other Elijah Craig barrel picks and it was a favorite against those in the blind. We had a 10 yr sample but the 9 yr was better.

Starlight that has notes of vanilla cheesecake. Oh my.

Starlight which The Boys think is one of the top 3 picks that we have ever done.

These barrels will be part of the lineup and drop throughout the year.

BARREL UPDATE: ARRIVING THURSDAY
Priced at $74.99. Finished in the most sought after Toppling Goliath Stout Cask.

Obtanium Bourbon finished in a TOPPLING GOLIATH STOUT CASK. This is the real deal.

We were able to buy this barrel because of the reputation of our customers. A big thank you to the picking team of Derek, Zech and Kyle and the guest pickers Josh Horral, Cam Ellis and Jeremiah Larrison. This barrel was a unanimous pick by the team.

Cats Eye Distillery/Obtanium is located in Bettendorf IA. They source their juice from around the world and it gets dropped in Bettendorf and that’s when the magic begins. The Cats Eye team is great at blending, finishing and bringing out the flavor from the juice.

I was talking to my friend Gene Nassif at Cats Eye and he mentioned that he had a special barrel. I said we would take it and he did everything but hang up on me. HA. She is now ours.

8 year whiskey aged 2 years in a Toppling Goliath cask, which is one of the most sought after stout barrels. This cask is so sought after that you have to win the lottery to buy a single bottle for $100 in Decorah.

Nose: rich maple and dark chocolate
Palate: dark cacao rolling into vanilla, cherry, maple syrup
Finish: chocolate covered cherries, dark chocolate and a hint of coffee

129 proof. I need to get my invoice before I know the price but somewhere mid $70’s.

If you’re a whiskey drinker who appreciates a unique finish, or a beer fan looking to see what whiskey can do … this one is worth a pour. Once it’s gone … it’s gone.
