NEW STORY ALERT!!

' A GAME FOR FOUR

CHAPTER ONE

One bright Sunday afternoon, I was sitting in my living room, half asleep and minding my own business. The weather was hot as was usual with that time of the year. The day was also very boring because there was no electricity. Just last week, that transformer that supplied light to our neighbourhood had caught fire. We had no idea when it would be replaced. It could take weeks, even months, we had no idea. It would have been better if my phone was on, but my phone was off because I hadn’t charged it well in about two days.

On a working day, I would have felt less bored, since I would have been at work. However, it was weekend, and there was no way I could fight my boredom by staying at home. So, I decided to go to an off-license bar that was around my neighbourhood. The owner had a standby generator. It was an opportunity for me to get my phone charged, and also to have some entertainment to ease off my boredom.

I went into my bedroom, dressed smart and casually, locked my door and went downstairs to the bar. When I got there, I saw that there were other people drinking and chatting excitedly because there was a Champions League Match going on. After haven given my phone to the bartender to charge, I sat down, ordered a bottle of juice, for I didn’t drink alcohol, and joined in watching the match on a huge plasma TV.

About three hours later, the generator ran out of fuel and the bartender announced that she wouldn’t be turning it on again until nighttime, since fuel had become expensive because of the recent removal of fuel subsidy. I had no more reason to stay there. So, I decided to go home. I went to the bartender to collect my phone before going, but I didn’t meet her there. The person I met instead was the owner of the place herself. She smiled as I approached her.

“You want another drink?” She asked.

“No, I came to get my phone. I gave it to your salesgirl to charge it for me.” I replied.

“She is not my salesgirl. She is my daughter.” She corrected me.

“Oh! Your daughter? You have such a big daughter?” I was surprised.

“Yes, why?”

“You don’t look to me like someone who has such a grown-up daughter. You look quite young to be the mother of such a girl.”

“Indeed!” She laughed. “She is my daughter. Anyway, I had her when I was only fifteen.”

“That makes sense to me now. Anyway, since you have turned of your generator, I have to go back home. Would you be so kind as to give me my phone?”

“There are a number of phones here.” She replied. “Would you be so kind as to tell me which one is yours?”

“The iPhone.”

“Oh! So, you are the one whose phone has been ringing endlessly? Your line is hotter than MTN itself.” She laughed.

“My phone has been ringing. It was supposed to be off.”

“I don’t know, maybe my daughter turned it on.”

“That is possible. Anyway, let me see who has been calling.”

She handed the phone to me. I checked my call log and realized that it was my boss who had been calling. Why was he calling me on a Sunday? So, I couldn’t rest even on a Sunday? Vexed, I put the phone in my hip pocket and turned to go.

“Are you alright?” The lady asked.

“Yes, I am. Why?”

“You don’t look happy. You were smiling just now and all of a sudden, everything changed. Or is it because your phone is not fully charged yet?”

“No, far from that. It is something that has to do with my job.”

“Alright, but in case you need to continue charging your phone, you can come back by 6:30 PM. The generator will be on again by that time.”

“Thank you, I will be back.”

I went back to my house, and feeling good because my phone was now on, I sat on an armchair and started browsing. As I browsed, I thought about my boss’ missed call. I decided I would call him only when I was about to go to sleep. I didn’t want to attend to anything that had to do with work on a Sunday.

As I continued browsing, my mind went back to the owner of the bar and her daughter. From the way she looked, she couldn’t be more than thirty-five years old. Yet she had a daughter that was about twenty years old. That was really impressive. Sometimes, it’s good to have children when you are much younger. Her daughter now looks like her sister, and she was very beautiful, just like her mother. Anyway, I decided that it was not my business. So, I turned my attention back to my phone.

It was around 6:15 PM now and I was still concentrating on my phone when I heard a knock on my door.

“Who is there?” I asked.

“Uncle, it is me.”

“Your name, please.”

“Mathilda.”

Wondering who was Mathilda, I got up and went to see who was at the door. To my greatest surprise, it was the bar owner’s beautiful daughter. She smiled broadly as she looked at me. I had seen that smile before. It was the same way her mother had smiled when I had gone to collect my phone just that afternoon.

“How are you?” I asked.

“Fine, Uncle.”

“So, how may I be of help to you?”

“My mum said I should tell you that she is about to turn on the gen again. So, you can come and continue charging your phone.”

“Really? Wow! That is both thoughtful and considerate of her. Tell I am on my way.”

“Ok, Uncle, I am going.”

“Ok, bye.”

“Bye, uncle.”

As she left, I stood by my door and watched her leave. I loved the way she rolled it. She could make a good girlfriend but, she was already spoiling business for me. She was calling me ‘uncle’. Why was she doing a thing like that? I wasn’t very much older than her. I was going to celebrate my birthday, my twenty seventh birthday in a few weeks. She was around twenty years and counting. The age difference wasn’t that much. So, why was she calling me ‘uncle’?”

She could be doing it as a form of respect, which was a good thing, but I didn’t want her respect. At least not for now. Calling me that complicates any thought of asking her out. It made my journey into her heart difficult. Now, I had to first of all try to eradicate the ‘uncle’ name, and then, start the process afresh. Anyway, what comes to a man is always within his capabilities. I decided that for now, I would go charge my phone. I would worry about the uncle thing later.

I went back to the bar and handed my phone to her mother. I got a seat and sat down, watching TV while waiting for the phone to charge. I was fully absorbed in the movie that was playing when someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and it was the smiling face of Mathilda. I smiled back.

“My mum said I should ask you what brand of drink you would like.”

“Drink? I haven’t ordered for any drink. I just want to sit and wait for my phone to charge.” I spoke.

“She said you would say that, and that if you do, I should tell you that it is on the house.” She smiled.

“On the house? What does that mean?”

“It means she is paying for it?”

“Hmm! Okay, in that case, bring me a bottle of cold Chill.”

“Okay, Uncle.”

It had been three hours now, and I felt like it was time to go home. So, I got up from my seat and went to the bar to get my phone, but I didn’t meet her mother. I asked Mathilda to give my phone, but she said her mother had taken it to their house which was just beside the bar. She said her mother said there were already too many phones to charge before I could come. So, there was no more space on the distributor for me to plug in my charger. That was why she had to take it to their house to charge it.

“Hmm! But I am about to go home now. What do I do?” I asked.

“She said I should give you another bottle of beer. She would return with your phone soon."

“Alright.” I got the other bottle, sat down again and continued drinking and watching TV.

An hour later, and by now, everyone had gone except Mathilda herself, her mother showed up, my phone in hand.

“I am sorry to have wasted your time.” She apologized.

“What took you so long?” I asked, slightly irritated. She had made me waste my time and I had to sleep early so that I could go to work the following day on time.

“I was watching an interesting Filipino Telenovela. I didn’t want to miss any bit.”

“Alright, thank you anyway.” I spoke and collected my phone from her. I checked and it was fully charged.

Happily, I quickly gulped my drink, intending to call it a night and go home, but she stopped me. She asked Mathilda to bring two more bottles, one for her and the other for me, and then, asked Mathilda to go home. She wanted just the two of us to be around. However, I quickly declined.

“I don’t want to drink anymore.”

“Why?”

“Because my tummy is full. I have had two bottles already, remember?”

“I know, but you can manage just one more.” She urged.

“No, I can’t, I am sorry.”

“Okay, they should bring you something smaller. Mathi, please, bring him malt.”

She was very persuasive. So, I conceded and took the malt. As soon as she was sure that Mathilda, her daughter, had gone, she began.

“Why are you hurrying home as if you have someone waiting for you. Do you?” She asked.

“No, it’s late already. That’s why.”

“Don’t you enjoy my company?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Alright, now, I have never seen you with a girl since you started living in this neighbourhood. Why is that?”

“Must you see me?”

“Yeah, it’s a small neighbourhood and everybody knows everybody.”

“Well, I don’t have.”

“Why?”

“I haven’t found one worthy enough.”

“Really? That is strange since there are a lot of nice girls in this neighbourhood.”

“Well, there are but I haven’t found any worthy enough. Don’t feel bad about that. You are a beautiful woman, and I would have loved you to be that special one. However, I have always known that you are married.”

“So, if am married, don’t they chat up married women?”

“What do you mean?” I asked, my eyes widening.

THE APPRENTICE

Episode 1

It was evening time, Chidi and his mother were in their kitchen trying to make dinner. Their small kerosene lantern gave light to the kitchen environment and the pale crescent moon from the sky shone on the outside.

Chidi's mother sent him to get some vegetables from their small garden behind the kitchen, he carried the lantern and left grumbling.

He hasn't been happy ever since his mother told him he was going to drop out of school.

Chidi was the only child of his mother. They have been struggling to survive since Chidi's father died.

His mother was a peasant farmer and also worked as a labourer at people's farms. That's how she manages to pay Chidi's school fees and also take care of their other needs.

Chidi was in SS1 then and his mother couldn't cope with paying his fees and providing their needs, so she pleaded with him to drop out and suggested that he learn a trade.

Chidi wasn't happy about his mother's decision but he got no choice.

Chidi brought the vegetables he cut from their garden and they started preparing the dinner.

"Your uncle told me that Chief Okoro will come home this weekend. We will go and see him."

Chidi still looking unhappy.

"It's for our good my son, Chief Okoro is a good man and I know he will take good care of you. He will not disappoint us."

She was trying so hard to persuade him to go.

"Remember, Chief Okoro lives in the city. You will enter his fine car and even live in a beautiful house with him."

Chidi grinned as his mother mentioned a fine car and a beautiful house.

His mother felt fulfilled and they continued preparing their meal.

When the food was done, his mother dished it out and both of them ate.

A few days later, Chief Okoro came back as they expected.

Later that day, Chidi and his mother went to see him.

Chief Okoro was a businessman based in Onitsha. He had earlier trained three boys from their village and they are all doing well.
He's always a point of reference for business success and excellence in their village.

They met him sitting outside, in front of his house. They greeted him and he offered them seats.

He gave them soft drinks, and afterwards, they told him the purpose of their coming.

"It's a nice idea, your brother-in-law has already informed me over the phone. If he's obedient and respectful, I can take him," Chief said.

"My son is very respectful and obedient. He's also hardworking. He can do any kind of job." she assured Chief Okoro.

"Okay. I'll be leaving tomorrow morning, endeavour to bring him on time."

"Okay sir, I will do just that."

She thanked Chief Okoro for accepting his son and they left.

The following day, they prepared early and left for Chief's place.

They got there early and waited for Chief to be ready.

Afterwards, Chidi's mother gave him words of advice and encouragement before he left with Chief for the city.

⚓ THE GAME OF DEATH ⚓ EPISODE 3 ⚓

Three days later while I was sitting at the front of my house, I saw Ella (the girl from my dream) with some papers and calling out.

"Richard, Richard, Richard, I think I've gotten a lead."
************************

I immediately rushed to her and grabbed the papers in her hand. I quickly went through it and Ella kept pointing out the main paragraphs to me. Although Kojo was in my house but still he wasn't ready for anything beyond the normal reality.

From the script we understood that my grandfather and Ella's grandfather was eager to possess the power of immortality ( eternal life) .

And as a result they consulted the native doctor of there time, who in return directed them to the point where the gift of death was located.

They went on the journey and together they found this gift of death, which happened to be a staff. Then they made an oath with the demon.

As time passed by, although they didn't die but they realised that the lives of there loved ones was used in exchange for there's.

It wasn't there agreement so they decided to end the deal. But by then it was too late because the demon has already taken pleasure in consuming the lives of there loved ones.

When they discovered that the demon won't stop hunting there loved ones, they decided to take their lives by themselves, breaking the deal with the demon.

"So why is he still tormenting us if the deal has been broken " I asked Ella.

"Because the Devil never gets satisfied and as a result he keeps hunting down the first sons of this family to renew the deal, if not they will go missing." Kojo answered while sipping his pepper soup.

"How did you know" I and Ella asked astonished .

"Ooh city people! My dad told me....it's not a hidden thing in the family." He answered not given a dem, only focusing on his pepper soup.

"So how can we end this" I asked, already frustrated.

"If the staff could be seen and destroyed. But your setup!d grand fathers forgot to mention where they hid it. And no native doctor can tell the location too." Kojo answered and looked at us." Two of you must get married so as to suppress the devils power on you." Then he laughed and dropped his plates before leaving for his house.

After a long talk with Ella we got caught up in the mood and one thing led to another we began kissing and romancing.

During the act, I by mistakenly pushed a picture and it fell to the floor. Still giving it no attention, I kept my hand on the point where the picture was and it surpressed inside. I broke from the emotion and lo a secret drawer opened revealing a strange staff.

I quickly brought it out and we both examine it. After much thoughts we decided to wait on Kojo. For safe keeping we returned it back to the exact place we took it from.

Later in the evening Kojo returned and we directed him to the place where the staff was. Kojo pressed and pressed the button but nothing happened.

I got scared and pressed it myself and then it opened, revealing the staff. It was now the thing no one understood in the riddle,: "Two are one, the game of death can't be won by one. They must be two," it meant that it's only the second generation that can break the curse.

As soon as Kojo held the staff he broke it to the ground. We both screamed at him but Kojo was an easy going person so he said:

"The book mentioned that the staff should be destroyed, so wat did you intend to do eeh"

After this we burned the remaining pieces and waited to see if everything was okay. Two weeks nothing happened.

Although we didn't have our parents back because "what ever the Devil takes, he'll never return" but the curse was broken for our next generations to come.

And lastly am still getting married to Ella. Lol.

⚓ THE GAME OF DEATH ⚓ EPISODE 2⚓

And all of sudden I jumped up from my bed it was a bit late, but by now there was no dark smoke in my room anymore, every thing was back to normal except for the fact that my parents where gone.
***************

I knew my next clue was to find the girl I saw in my dream, but it was difficult since I wasn't familiar with anyone ( it was a December period and my parents took me to the village).

I was still thinking of what to do when my cousin dashed into the house and announced to me that there was a gathering in the village square that night.

By 5 pm my cousin arrived and began to rush me into preparing real quick. According to him he wanted to toast some of the girls who returned from the city ( unlike me my cousin lives with his parents in the village).

I quickly prepared and sluggishly followed him. We got there and my cousin left me for the girls. I was lonely siting on a rock by a tree planted in the village square. As time passed, people began coming in large numbers and soon the place was filled.

As the show was going on, I noticed a girl, who was looking back, staring at me consecutively. It was weird because the way the person looked it was as if I was a ghost.

I got so uncomfortable and decided to go have a talk with her but when she saw me walking towards her, she ran deeper into the crowd trying to hide. Throughout the whole night I kept on searching for her but It was all invain.

I decided to give up and return home alone. By 10pm my cousin came back with this particular girl. When our face met she wanted to pick to her toes but I held her back. Lo and behold it was the same girl in my dream.

We both sat down together and analysed what happened and it happened to be that she too lost her parents the same way I did mine.

After sharing our stories she decided to spend the night over.

By 2am we both woke up only to see dark tick smokes around wrapping the whole room. I tapped Kojo ( my cousin) so many times but it was as if he was dead.

Then the strange man appeared again and let out a loud laugh, before saying.

"First riddle solved, now to break the hold of death you have to bring the gift of death "

"Why are you tormenting us"the girl cried out.

"Shut up!" The man shouted angrily with a thunderous voice. "It was a gift I gave to them. I must have it back. If you don't bring the gift of death you should consider your parents gone " he lashed out and disappeared.

We both were scared to the core that we couldn't sleep till day break.

Early in the morning we began searching my house to see if there was anything of value or anything with the label 'gift of death '.

It was already noon and yet we couldn't find anything. We both got exhausted as Kojo refused helping us with anything.

Three days later while I was sitting at the front of my house, I saw Ella (the girl from my dream) with some papers and calling out.

"Richard, Richard, Richard, I think I've gotten a lead."

The Gateman, Episode One

Bekee was the most beautiful girl in Agusi village. She was so beautiful that everyone around used her as a reference for anything good. It was not for nothing that she was named ‘Bekee,’ an Igbo name that means ‘white person.’ Her skin shone like early morning sun and even from afar, one could see that her body was as tender as freshly plucked tomatoes. Some people called her ‘tomato Jos.’

Bekee was well-mannered too because she was properly brought up. She was very much aware of her beauty, but never did she allow that to get into her head. She had a lot of respect for elders.

She was therefore a hot cake in the marriage market. Men poured into her father’s compound like tap water seeking her hand in marriage. Every man wanted to speedily pluck the ripped apple before another person eats it. But there was just one man she loved and his name was Chima.

Chima was a businessman and he lived in Asaba. By all standards, Chima was rich. He owned fleets of cars and beautiful houses across the city.

“I love him.” Bekke said to her parents one day when Chima came to see them.
“I want to marry him.” Bekee said with a resolute tone. She was just eighteen and her parents were scared she was too young for marriage or to even understand what love means. At that time, Chima was forty-five and he was previously married only that his wife died from breast cancer three years before. He already had a daughter from his late wife, Adanna.

For all these reasons, Bekee’s parents were convinced Chima would take care of her as if she was his own child, so they allowed the marriage to go on.

That was five years ago. Chima who is now fifty has proved to be a very good husband to Bekee. He is caring, loving and totally faithful to her. Bekee has everything money can buy and she was pampered like an egg. But there was just one problem: She has not been able to conceive since she got married to Chima five years ago.

Bekee has clocked twenty-three, and this means she still has her youthful age by her side, but an unbearable pressure mounted from Chima’s mother who insisted she wanted grand-children. The woman’s pressure and abusive words were silently killing Bekee and even though she still looked beautiful and charming, she was dying from the inside.

“I’m afraid I may collapse and die one day.” Bekee said to her friend Adaku when she went to visit her one Sunday evening. Adaku was a single mother who lived next door.

“Do you know that Chima’s mother is coming to visit us from the village today and I’m afraid of that woman. In fact, she is bringing a new wife for her son. Though Chima has told me he won’t accept or touch the girl, but Adaku, I’m scared. I don’t know what to do. Is this how my marriage will end?” Bekee asked her friend with hot, painful tears in her eyes.

“Why are you always the ‘cry cry’ type?” Adaku asked Bekee with a motherly voice. Adaku was thirty-five and therefore more experienced with matters of the heart.

“I wanted to ask you, Bekee.” Adaku continued after taking a bite from the apple she was eating. The sound of her mouth punctuated what she was saying.

“I want to ask o! Apart from crying, what else have you done about your childlessness? Your mother-in-law is moving ‘pyom pyom pyom’ in search of a new wife for your husband. You, what have you done?” Said Adaku.

“I have gone to countless hospitals and doctors keep telling me everything is Ok with me.” Bekee said. She removed a white handkerchief from her handbag and wiped her tears.

“Have you tried another man?” Adaku asked. The question sounded like a bombshell to Bekee’s ears.

“What?” Bekee wanted to be sure she heard clearly.

“I mean, have you slept with another man apart from Chima. Have you gone out to try another man?” Adaku sounded very clear right now and was very serious with what Bekee thought was a bizarre suggestion.

“Tufiakwa!” Bekee shouted. “I don’t think I’m capable of such treachery.”

“Then, be ready to lose your husband and marriage then.” Adaku said and then stood up and left the room. She knew she had planted a seed in Adaku’s heart and that it would germinate in due time.

That same evening, Chima’s mother arrived from the village with a new wife for her son. The young lady is named Ngozika. By all standards, Ngozika was very charming and she was not a typical village girl. She was seductively dressed and all her curves showed.

Her presence made Bekee feel very intimidated and even threatened. She was deeply hurt.
Matters got worse for Bekee when Ngozika went straight to her matrimonial room and dropped her bag. Chima offered no resistance. In fact, he fell for Ngozika as soon as he set his eyes on her. Only a few men can resist the presence of a beautiful woman offered to them on a platter of gold..

That same night, Bekee moved her things out of the matrimonial room as she wasn’t prepared for the shame. She was the one who hadn't borne a child after five years, so she felt ashamed and obligated to give way to another woman. She occupied another room downstairs. She was very lonely that night and she cried her eyes out.

And then, she remembered the question Adaku her friend had asked her earlier in the evening.
She decided to do something about it and then she paid The Gateman an emergency visit that night. Bekee did not want Ngozika to get pregnant before her. She wants to prove that she is indeed fertile and a proper woman.

“If The Gateman can make me pregnant, then so be it.” Bekee said as she came out of her room and quietly entered The Gateman’s room.

She was prepared to fight and the battle has begun!

THE GAME OF DEATH ⚓ EPISODE 1

I woke up in the middle of the night, but couldn't find my parents, who had slept beside me the previous night. I looked around but found nothing, instead the room became filled with dark dust /smoke which later covered the ceiling, the door and windows.

Still trying to understand if it was a dream or reality, from nowhere a strange man appeared backing me and facing the window, with his both hands behind his back.

"Who are you and where is my parents?" I asked with a shaky voice.

"It's time for the game to be played!" The mysterious man said with a deep voice like that of a demon.

"What game, what game are you talking about?"

"Two are one, the game of death can't be won by one. They must be two " the man said in riddles and disappeared in to the dark smokes.

Immediately a very deep sleep, even though I was willing to stand up, over powered me and all of sudden fell into a very deep sleep like never before.

While sleeping, I had a weird dream of myself in a dark trance , everywhere was smokey I couldn't see anything only a dime light which still, I couldn't detect where it was shining from.

I became gripped with fear and with tears running down my eyes and I began to scream in agony .

"Mum, dad, (wait for a while) mum, dad." I Kept calling out to them as I walked through the mist of darkness.

After a while, I began to hear a voice from afar, I thought it to be my parents, so I increased my voice "mom, dad" as I began running towards the direction.

Getting closer I discovered the voice wasn't that of my parents but of a teenage girl, who was looking lost. And was also wandering, just like me.

I walked closer to her, atleast to have a conversation but as soon as our eyes met, she fell into the ground and disappeared . Then the mysterious mans voice sounded again, although I couldn't see him.

"I said; Two are one, the game of death can't be won by one. They, must be two " then he led out a thunderous laugh that got me freaked to the point of me urinating in my pants.

After a while of wandering and crying, a white thin smoke floated towards me and then a very sweet voice, so melodious in the ears, said to me.

"Go, find her and don't forget, Two are one, the game of death can't be won by one. They must be two "

And all of sudden I jumped up from my bed it was a bit late, but by now there was no dark smoke in my room anymore, every thing was back to normal except for the fact that my parents where gone.

⚔️THE STRANGER TWIN ⚔️ EPISODE 3⚔️

"Richard do you know what happened to your parents before they passed away?" The real girl asked.

Before I could answer I noticed her twin ghost was shading tears.
*********************

"Why are you crying, I thought it's my pain?" I asked the ghost twin.

"Who are you talking to?"the real girl asked, confusedly.

"Girl leave me alone "I warned and stood up to take a leave.

"Am 'Sonia' by name and not 'girl' " the real girl said and walked out angrily.

( NOTE: From now on the real girl and her invincible twin will be addressed by the name Sonia)

I too seeing that I was alone with invincible Sonia I left the scene but invincible Sonia kept following me.

"Leave me she is your sister something, go with her " I screamed to her and she disappeared.

When I got home that day and was in my room, although invincible Sonia wasn't there. My uncle knocked my door and on opening it; he gave me an envelope, asking me to go through them that they were all my test results from the hospital.

As soon as he left, I opened the envelope, but before I could see the content inside, Sonia appeared from no where.

"Don't open that" she warned furiously.

"Jesus" I screamed and fell on my bed in fear " you scared me, I know you're invincible but try dey knock. By the way this is......."

"Just a hospital test results, I know. Seeing that results will make you hate me it's not yet time." She cuts in.

In the night while I was sleeping, I heard a sound of a broken bottle, which woke me up. It turned out that it was my favourite glass that she broke.

"Let's go" she said while facing the door, waiting for me to prepare.

"Where are we going to by this time of the night " I asked with a half closed and sleepy eye.

"To the basement and be quick, we don't have much time left " she spoke coldly, amidst tears.

I quickly got up and followed her gradually as I tiptoed down to the basement. On opening the basement door, I noticed chains with handcuffs on the ground. I freaked out because it looked like one of those cages, the colonial masters used in imprisoning their slaves.

"scrape " she spoke, pointing towards one table by the corner.

I walked to the table and discovered they were dry bl00d on the table. I quickly scraped it into a small container as she instructed and together we left the basement.

"Take the blood samples to a clinic and run gene test with your blood " invincible Sonia instructed.
