Thompson and HPR to Make ARCA Menards West Debut

(February 2, 2021) Moorpark, CA - Dean Thompson and High Point Racing, winners of the 2020 SPEARS Southwest Tour Series Rookie of the Year and 2020 Irwindale Speedway LKQ Pick Your Part Late Model Championship, will be making the leap to the ARCA Menards Series West for 2021. Beginning with Phoenix Raceway on March 6th, Thompson and his #51 Thompson Pipe Group / High Point Racing team will compete for Rookie of the Year and the Championship.

Thompson is entering his fourth year at High Point Racing. The 19-year-old Anaheim Hills resident has victories in multiple divisions with HPR including Late Models and Pro Lates. Along with a full-time campaign in the SPEARS Southwest Tour, the addition of the full ARCA West schedule will see Thompson and HPR compete for the two most prestigious championships on the west coast.

“I cannot thank Thompson Pipe Group and High Point Racing enough for this opportunity” said Thompson. “The ARCA Menards Series West is a historic series that has helped launch so many careers in stock car racing. I look forward to this new and exciting challenge and can’t wait to get to Phoenix in March. I believe the #51 Thompson Pipe Group / High Point Racing Ford is going to turn a lot of heads this year.”

High Point Racing’s driver development program has seen drivers such as Cup Series Rookie of the Year Cole Custer and Xfinity Series winner Ryan Reed come through their program at the Late Model level. Following expansions into the Pro Late and Super Late divisions, HPR looks to solidify itself as one of the country’s premier development teams with the addition of an ARCA Menards Series West team. To aid with this expansion, HPR has entered into a technical alliance with the perennial championship contenders, Sunrise Ford Racing.

“The ARCA Menards Series West has been a goal of ours for quite some time” said Team Owner Tim Huddleston. “For a development team such as HPR, we really needed to have the right opportunity, with the right driver. When Dean came to us during the 2018 season, we started him in sportsman cars. Since then, he has progressed into Late Models, followed by Super Late Models. The idea has been to constantly challenge him with a variety of cars and competition. With support from Sunrise Ford in 2021, I’m confident Dean, and the HPR team as a whole, will be ready for this new challenge in the ARCA Menards Series West.”

The 2021 ARCA Menards Series West season will kick off March 6th at Phoenix Raceway. All races will be televised live on NBC Sports TRACK PASS.

Thompson Returns to HPR for 2021 SPEARS SRL Series

(January 25, 2021) Moorpark, CA – 2020 Irwindale Late Model Champion and SPEARS Southwest Tour Rookie of the Year Dean Thompson will return to High Point Racing to compete for the 2021 SPEARS Southwest Tour Series Championship. In addition to the full “Tour” Super Late schedule, Thompson will also compete in select SPEARS SRL Pro Late Model events.

“Dean has become one of the most promising young talents on the west coast over the past couple seasons” said High Point Racing Owner Tim Huddleston. “His determination and drive to improve each time he straps into a race car is something that I feel makes him better each race. We could not be more excited to welcome him back to HPR for 2021.”

Following a partial Spec Late Model division season in 2018, Thompson earned a promotion to the Irwindale Speedway Late Model division for 2019. In two seasons running Late Models, Thompson would compile 7 wins, the 2020 Irwindale Speedway Late Model Championship and the 2020 NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series California State Championship.

“The entire High Point Racing team, along with myself, worked tirelessly over the course of the 2018 and 2019 seasons. So to have it all culminate in 2020 with two championships, and rookie of the year, really was a dream come true” said Thompson. “I couldn’t be more excited about returning to HPR and I think the #51 Thompson Pipe Group / HPR team is going to be a force to be reckoned with in 2021.”

In addition to his success in the Late Model division, Thompson made his debut in the Super Late ranks last season, running the full season in the SPEARS Southwest Tour. Strong runs at Stockton, Roseville and Kern propelled the young driver to the 2020 SPEARS Rookie of the Year Award.

The 2021 season will kick off for Dean and the #51 Thompson Pipe Group / High Point Racing team at Irwindale Speedway. On February 6th, Thompson will vie for $30,000 to win at the Sunrise Ford All-Star Showdown presented by West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame.

HUDDLESTON WINS $10,000 SHORT TRACK SHOOTOUT IN LATE RACE DUEL AT MADERA

Story by Steven Blakesley | Photo by Jason Wedehase

MADERA, CALIF. (October 3, 2020) – 2018 California State Champion Trevor Huddleston completed his long awaited ascent to a major event win at Madera Speedway, winning a late-race duel with Buddy Shepherd in the Eighth Annual $10,000 to win Nut Up Short Track Shootout on Saturday night.

Parker Malone won the $4,500 to win B Main that narrowed the 35 car field to 26 starters for the 150-lap contest.

Dylan Zampa of Napa led the first lap of competition from the outside pole in a side-by-side race with Huddleston. They remained side-by-side until a caution on lap five. On the restart, Zampa charged past Huddleston on the outside with Shepherd following Zampa to take second.

Ninth-starting Jeremy Doss, the defending Nut Up Short Track Shootout winner, was up to fourth by lap 21 as he battled with Carlos Vieira. The racing line moved higher and higher on the entry to turn one throughout this extended green flag run.

Shepherd closed on Zampa for the lead with the duo making contact into turn one, sending Zampa spinning for a caution on lap 23. Both Shepherd and Zampa had to restart at the back, before Zampa eventually succumbed to mechanical issues. Huddleston assumed the top position and used the outside on the restart while Mike Doss challenged Vieira for second.

A caution flew on lap 46 when 2019 Nut Up Pro Late Model champion Austin Herzog slowed on the front stretch. Huddleston picked the inside on the restart which allowed Jeremy Doss to go around the outside to take the lead on lap 47.

2018 Short Track Shootout winner Logan Zampa spun from the fifth position along with Dean Thompson for a caution on lap 52. Shepherd quickly moved through the pack, emerging in sixth in just 40 laps since being sent to the rear.

Mike Doss and Huddleston staged an exciting battle for second until the lap 100 break, with Doss narrowly edging Huddleston for the position. Jeremy Doss, Mike Doss, Huddleston, Vieira, and Ryan Philpott were the top-five coming out of the Mission Racing Style Tortilla Chips halfway show for MAVTV. For the final 50 laps, Shepherd continued his run towards the front. Former MAVTV Pro Late Model winners Racin Vernon and Blaine Rocha crashed on the backstretch to force a red flag on lap 123. Both were uninjured.

Logan Zampa was involved in another spin on the front stretch on lap 123 as well. Doss, Huddleston, and Vieira put on a frantic battle for the lead on the ensuing restart, with numerous crossover moves. The race boiled over when Vieira went three-wide on the inside into turn one. Vieira and Huddleston made contact, sending Huddleston into the left rear of Doss. Vieira slid past them both before tangling with Doss and crashing into the backstretch wall.

Vieira’s night ended while Doss was relegated to the back of the field for his involvement. Huddleston assumed the lead while Shepherd wrestled side-by-side with 26th starting Tyler Herzog for numerous laps for second. Herzog eventually fell out of the event with a failure on the left front, setting up a seven-lap sprint for the $10,000 to win.

Huddleston and Shepherd exchanged blows, with Shepherd taking the lead on lap 147 on the exit of turn four. Huddleston muscled his way back to the front, leading lap 149 across the stripe and darting ahead to a .296 victory. Shepherd finished with a $5,000 second over Ross Strmiska for a $2,500 third place run. Jeremy Doss worked his way back to fourth ahead of his father Mike, with Jeremy clinching the $5,000 to win Race 2B Drug Free Big3 championship in the process as well.

Cole Brown of Ukiah won his second 51FIFTY Jr. Late Model Series race while Bradley Erickson unofficially clinched the 2020 series championship with a runner-up performance in the 70-lap contest.

Jake Bollman led from the pole position with Erickson working the inside to take second from Brown by lap two. Bollman led Erickson, Brown, Ethan Nascimento, and Kercie Jung into the lap 40 break for adjustments and MAVTV interviews after a fast-paced opening segment.

Erickson expected a shot at the lead from the outside line during his interview, and took advantage when Bollman placed him there on the restart. The 14-year-old from Phoenix drove ahead of Bollman to lead lap 41. The caution flew on the following lap for Colorado’s Holly Clark spun out on the backstretch.

Jung and fellow Bakersfield driver Kabe McClenny battled for fifth before Jung took over on lap 46. Brown used the inside to win a side-by-side battle with Bollman for second on lap 49.

Brown moved in on Erickson, nosing inside on the front stretch to lead lap 57. Brown led the final 14 laps for the triumph over Erickson, Bollman, Nascimento, and Jung.

Jeffrey Erickson continued his unbeaten season in the Bandoleros, winning round eight in the 30-lap feature. Bakersfield’s Caden Cordova finished second with Linden’s Wyatt Sansom in third. Evan Laires won his first Mini Cup feature at Madera in the race within a race, with points leader Rebecca Dubie of Tracy finishing second and wrapping up the 2020 Mini Cup championship in the process.

Thompson Looks to Add to List of Firsts in 2020

Moorpark, CA. (September 24, 2020) – The 2020 season has been full of “firsts” for Dean Thompson and his No. 51 Thompson Pipe Group/HAAS Development/High Point Racing team.

This past Saturday, Thompson pulled triple duty for the first time at Irwindale Speedway, competing in three different divisions (Super Late, Pro Late, and Late Model) for a total of five races. The three-day event saw him complete over 600 laps around the ½ mile speedway. When it was all said and done, Thompson came home with five top-five finishes and saw his LKQ Pick Your Part Late Model points lead grow to 34 points over second place Dylan Garner. “Pulling triple duty was definitely an adventure,” said Thompson. “Between the vastly different cars, and the increased on-track activity, I don’t think you could put a price tag on that type of experience. I feel like I am that much more prepared to tackle Roseville this upcoming weekend.”

Back in August, Thompson earned his first career top-five finish at All-American Speedway in Roseville, CA. Now, the current rookie of the year standings leader looks to earn another first at the 1/3 mile oval. “We have a lot of momentum on our side right now. I’m confident that we have an opportunity to turn a lot of heads this weekend and, possibly, bring home that first SPEARS Southwest Tour Series victory” said Thompson.

Headed into this weekend, Thompson finds himself atop the Rookie of the Year standings and 10th in the Championship. Tune into SpearsRacing.TV on Saturday, September 26th, to watch Dean Thompson and his No. 51 Thompson Pipe Group/HAAS Development/High Point Racing team take on the best in the west for the “JM Environmental Inc. 127” at All-American Speedway.
