摩爾多瓦是國際葡萄酒組織OIV（Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du vin）的5個創始國中最古老的葡萄酒產地，擁有5000多年的釀酒歷史，是世界上最早釀制葡萄酒的國家之一，凝聚了悠久深厚的文化底蘊。自西元9世紀開始，俄羅斯民族就以飲用摩爾多瓦葡萄酒為榮。在帝俄沙皇時期，摩爾多瓦幾乎供應了全俄羅斯帝國的葡萄酒。之後的蘇聯時期，摩爾多瓦仍然是全蘇維埃聯邦中最主要的葡萄酒產地。而這裡所生產的葡萄酒，也深受英國國王喬治五世和英國女王維多利亞的喜愛，被送到英國皇室，成為另一種形式的外交往來。時至今日，法國十大酒莊都有在摩爾多瓦貼牌生產，全球許多主要產地每年也大量進口摩爾多瓦葡萄酒。
