Our final day in Vienna was a whirlwind, but a very wholesome one at that. The morning started with Austria’s biggest wine fair featuring a full assortment of organic, Demeter certified, and conventional winemakers from all over the country. Here we met with an abundance of our winemakers from the classic to the contemporary and everywhere in between. We sampled pours of some of the greatest wines from producers in the Wachau like as well as revisiting the wines of Muthenthaler and Knoll; from the Wagram there was Weingut Fritsch and Kamptal showing a beautiful assortment of wines from and a new discovery in the hands of .wine and from the Weinviertel the wines of and newfound favorites from winemaking siblings .family

After an abundance of tastings in Vienna’s beautifully historic Hofburg Palace we took a quick walk over to the famous garden restaurant of where the crew from arranged an incredibly intimate tasting with winemakers we were lucky to see over the course of the entire week. Here we sat amongst great company as .zillinger and explained their wines and how they manifested them in encapsulating detail. As we drank and sipped alongside some of the world’s greatest wine writers, sommeliers, masters of wine (with a lovely surprise appearance of !), we were left feeling deeply in awe of the current state of Austrian wine, and even more excited to be working with such an fantastic, and hopefully growing, array of producers from the region.

We are so excited to be sharing the committed work of these dedicated producers here in Thailand and we hope to share this passion and energy with all of you through continued tastings, events, and more!

On our second day in the Wachau, our morning started along the banks of the Danube river that winds through arguably one of the most picturesque winemaking regions in the world. Here we hopped in the car with Franz of to visit his old school cellar cut deep into the side of the Kamptal hills. We were fortunate enough to taste through a series of barrels and tanks containing evolving and resolute samples of Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, and more than a few shades of Muskateller. The wines were vibrant and steeped in that characteristic minerality and acid that we love from Wabi Sabi.

Upon finishing our tasting, we were met by Julie Hoch assembling a beautiful bouquet of herbs and flowers from her biodynamic garden, before being greeted by a delightfully refreshing bottle of her fermented elderflower and hop kombucha. We picked fresh chamomile and apple mint reveling in the smells and sounds, as Julie told us about her wine and herbal infusion project called

As we chatted about the vineyard, we were met by her partner Christoph Hoch an amazing winemaker in his own right with an uncanny ability to craft beautiful sparkling wines from the limestone rich soils of the Kremstal. We toured the steep vineyard hillsides that have been in his family for generations before touring his historical cellar in the town of Krems an der Donau. Christoph’s Kalkspitz cuvee has been a part of our book for quite some time and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of fresh and fun new sparkling wines from him as well

The third day of our Austria trip was all about the Wachau! in collaboration with arranged a full day of activities designed to immerse wine folks from all over the world a bit deeper into a more traditional region that is now seeing some monumental strides in the styles of low intervention. An early bus took us from Vienna out to the Wachau as we were joined by sommeliers, restaurant owners, importers, wine writers, and more amongst the lush and verdant hills of the region.

We took a walking tour led by of some of the Wachau’s most famous vineyards around the town of Weissenkirchen, traversing the hills through terraced vineyards of Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, and other essential grapes of the region. Erich shared a wealth of knowledge with us as we overlooked the historic village and saw the variety of ways grapes are grown here including the Stockkultur method of planting.

Later on the team was whisked away to Kremstal to pay a visit to Schloss Hollenburg for a culinary event led by Michelin star chef alongside the wines and delightful company of winemakers: .zillinger and more

After lunch we set out on our own to learn about some of the Wachau’s most famous estates, starting with a trip to the tasting room of Emmerich Knoll of the iconic @ weingut_knoll_wachau . We tasted through fantastic flavors of Gruner and Riesling from their Loibner, Kreutles, and Loibenberg vineyards, and were even lucky enough to sample a 1993 Loibenberg Riesling from the estate.

To end the day we head to the Spitzer Graben for tasting at one of the region’s rising stars whose’ phenomenal cuvees sourced from single vineyard sites in the steep hills surrounding the town of Spitz, including a tour of the garage turned cellar where he and his partner Melanie make the wines beneath their house. They recently have received high acclaim from some of the world’s most notable wine critics and we can’t be more than happy to bring a selection of their highly thoughtful cuvees to Thailand

After a whirlwind first day, we set off back to Eisenstadt for part two of wine festival! The first day of the event was more about exploring new winemakers, whereas today’s focus was to rendezvous with the myriad of Austrian winemakers we have worked with for the past few years, some of whom have been with us since the very beginning of Wine Garage’s inception.

We started off by saying hi to our good friend Franz from tasting a range impeccably arranged Grüners and Rieslings along with the fresh and fun Love & Passion series that have been and continue to be a real hit back home in Bangkok

Followed up of course by absurdly good pink, orange, and red bubbles from who we hadn’t seen since his 2019 visit to Bangkok if you can believe it!

The wines of and followed suit, with super fresh, low alcohol iterations of Gruner, Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, and even a bit of Wachau Syrah

After this we tasted through all of amazing wines, each one so impressive and a true testament to the contemporary landscape of Austrian winemaking. The wines were positively singing in the glass, with a special treat of sampling a new (ultra limited, like, we’re talking one barrel here) Furmint plus his iconic Pinot Noir out of the magnum.

Tomorrow we’re off to the Wachau to explore more wineries and taste through the cellars of some of the region’s greats, feeling incredibly happy and full-hearted after two days of basking in the bright glow of Austria’s winemaking scene and all those that are invested in this incredible community.”

Day one of our Austrian wine adventure started bright & early today as we arrived in Vienna just after dawn this morning! We took the train straight out to Eisenstadt to visit one of our long standing producers from the Burgenland by touring the cellars of . This multi-generational winemaking estate, now led by Erwin Tinhof and his nephew Lukas who specialize in crafting the native red and white varietals of Sankt Laurent and Neuberger, with some dashing Weissburgunder and Blaufrankisch thrown in the mix as well. We got to taste fresh samples right out of their famous Stockinger barrels while discussing the past, present, and future of winemaking in the region.

After a quick visit to their hillside vineyards, we headed off to one of the world’s foremost (and funnest!) low-intervention and natural wine fairs, . Here we got to reconnect with good friends, tasting wines from all over Europe. Brilliant labels and vibrant cuvees shining in the hands of producers both new and old from Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy, England, and Poland left us reeling with excitement for what’s currently buzzing in the world of wine. Tomorrow we’ll be back for day 2 to check in with some of our favorite winemakers from Austria and beyond, cheers!

We are proud to present Bangkok’s first ever PetNat Palooza, a festival celebrating all things fun and fizzy! This collaborative project was dreamt up with the help of our friends, as we partner with six different restaurants and bars throughout the city to bring you the best bottles of petillant naturel to try.

All next weekend, from Friday March 8th till Sunday the 10th guests will be able to enjoy a unique array of five different naturally-fermented sparkling wines and ciders offered by the glass and bottle at each venue, with special events taking place in some including pop-up chefs, live music, DJs, and more. We are incredibly excited and thankful to partner with .house.bangkok and .by.na to make this ancestral festival happen.
