11/07/2024

The history of Clos Fourtet goes back to the Middle Ages when the wine was better known under the name of Camp Fourtet and was a stronghold intended to protect the city of Saint-Emilion. This wine estate owes its fame to the families Rulleau and De Carles, Lords of Figeac. Since 1949, the Lurton family became owner of the vineyard and does not stop making it progress. In 2001, the property was bought by Philippe Cuvelier, who continued to modernize it. Today, Clos Fourtet correlates its traditional vinification and very modern techniques to obtain an exceptional vintage.

From one of the prized terroirs on the upper limestone plateau, the vineyard is situated upon the summit of Saint Emilion, close to Chateau Canon. The predominance of limestone brings inimitable freshness to the wines, with minerality and delicate tannins, forming the wines with a strong identity that is dear to passionate enthusiasts who talk of a ‘Clos Fourtet style’.

The 2016 Clos Fourtet has impressive concentration, yet there is real elegance and persistence, fanning out wonderfully towards the finish. Mathieu Cuvelier has also overseen another outstanding Clos Fourtet. Antonio Galloni of Vinous is also a fan awarding the vintage 97 points, according to him "2016, Clos Fourtet is stunningly beautiful and utterly compelling."

Truly exceptional 2016! Don't miss.

Clos Fourtet 2016
Offer: $190 [6bt & above]
or $200 per bot | U.P.: $240

97 by Jeb Dunnuck
One of the gems in the vintage that should be snatched up by readers is the 2016 Château Clos Fourtet... Its saturated purple color is followed by a monster bouquet of ripe blackberries, cassis, graphite, and crushed rocks, and it picks up more blue fruits, truffle, and limestone minerality with time in the glass. This deep, full-bodied, powerful Saint-Emilion has some similarities to Canon yet is deeper and richer, with a more powerful yet still elegant style.

97 by James Suckling
Love the dark-berry and intense black-olive and chocolate aromas that follow through to a full body and firm and chewy tannins that deliver a rich and delicious finish. Such polish and, at the same time, finesse. But one of the cellar. A blend of 90% merlot, 7% cabernet sauvignon and 3% cabernet franc. Try from 2022

97 by Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2016 Clos Fourtet is vivid, explosive and simply captivating. Inky blue/purplish berry fruit, lavender, spice and white flowers are all vivid in the glass, but it is the wine's silky, seamless personality that elevates it into a place among the wines of the vintage. In 2016, Clos Fourtet is stunningly beautiful and utterly compelling. This is a tremendous showing from proprietor Matthieu Cuvelier and consulting winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt

96 by Decanter
This showcases why Clos Fourtet is such a confident, powerful wine. It gets the balance right between the sappy, saline quality of its limestone terroir and yet reflects the ripeness and flashiness of Merlot that makes St-Émilion such a well loved appellation. Excellent, serious quality, cerebral but sexy.

95 by Wine Spectator
Lively, with a juicy, mouthfilling mix of loganberry, black currant and bramble flavors pumping through, laced liberally with licorice snap and roasted apple wood notes. To***co and savory accents provide detail, while a beautifully fine chalky thread adds length. (JM)

Followers of Château Branaire-Ducru know that this is a solid, satisfying Saint-Julien wine that always offer consistently fantastic value.

Over recent years Branaire-Ducru has emerged as a top-tier Saint-Julien, with Wine Spectator saying that “those looking for elegance and purity without sacrificing ageability, this is one of Bordeaux’s best and most consistent wines fitting that bill”.

This 2012 is an acknowledged classic. A top quality, palate-pleasing and value-for-money purchase ideal for drinking now that will not break the bank!

🔥Our Offer🔥
Branaire-Ducru Saint Julien 2012
Offer: $108 [6bt & above]
or $115 per bot | U.P.: $135

91 points James Suckling
A clean and fresh wine with blueberry, mineral and floral character. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a crisp finish. This is a very refined and beautiful Branaire.

91 points Vinous
The 2012 Branaire-Ducru has a rather subdued bouquet compared to its peers and lacks the same joire de vivre as the 2012 Clos du Marquis. The palate is medium-bodied with a light grip on the entry, finely balanced with admirable purity. It suggests that the aromatics might be amidst a dumb phase because there is more brightness towards the finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. - NM

90 points Wine Advocate
Deep ruby/purple, with sweet cranberry, mulberry and raspberry/blueberry fruit, this is always a distinctive St.-Julien and the 2012 has managed to avoid any of the hollowness or harsh tannins that can afflict some of the Médocs. It is elegant, well-made and an outstanding effort in this vintage.

90 points Wine Spectator
Bay leaf and to***co notes are backed by a core of damson plum, black cherry and red currant fruit. The bay leaf edge underlines the finish, with a hint of violet and a well-buried iron accent. An elegant expression of St.-Julien. Best from 2017 through 2024. 12,083 cases made. -JM

What’s the best Chilean wine? Well, as you know wine tasting is a very subjective thing, and there are way too many wines that can fit the criteria depending on who you ask. But here's a fact: Purple Angel 2018 by Montes is definitely on the list!

"Consistently one of the best and most layered carmeneres from Chile and, indeed, the world. Intriguing Cuban cigar and roasted bay-leaf character to the blackcurrants, blackberries and exotic spices. Some sandalwood, black chocolate, cedar and baked red chili pepper, too. Full-bodied, creamy and voluptuous, but still fresh and juicy, with dried-leaf, dark-olive and finely ground cocoa-powder character. Dusty tannins and a long, refined finish. A blend of 92% carmenere from Apalta (46%) and Marchigue(46%) and 8% petit verdot from Apalta. Drink or hold." JS98

This superb wine represents a whole new dimension for Carmenère, the long-lost grape variety that recently resurfaced in Chile after being presumed extinct in Bordeaux, its original home. I Purple Angel, has been recognised as Chile's best Carmenère. Critics all over the world have named this wine a "wine from another planet" 'A long-lasting wine with a clear profile.'

Dont' miss today's crazy-deal. For only $110 per bottle, we are confident we offer the best price in town! 😎

Château Carbonnieux is perhaps one of the most beloved properties hailing from Pessac-Léognan. This Graves Grand Cru Classé has one of the longest histories in the entire region that dates all the way back to the 12th Century. The vineyard is 900-hectares, making it one of the largest in the entire appellation. Yet despite its size, Château Carbonnieux never compromises in terms of production, yielding some of the most iconic and timeless red and white wines from the Pessac-Leognan Region.

Château Carbonnieux has the privilege of being one of the 134 members of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux. This association brings together the most prestigious vintages of the Bordeaux region. The wines are incredibly beautiful and balanced and are versatile enough to drink after some decanting or lay down for years to come. In magnificent vintage 2016, the wine shows the structure of the vintage that impressed many wine critics.

Gazin is a must-know producer for Pomerol fans. Not only because the quality of the wine here is top notch, but also because it is a great value option compared to some of the more exorbitantly priced producers in this Right Bank commune.

For oenophiles who understand and choose wine based on the promise of terroir, Château Gazin has some phenomenal terroir indeed. This estate is neighbors to the stars of this region, including the iconic Château Pétrus. It is said to have the same blue clay that can be found at Château Pétrus. With its elegant, sensual and age worthy wines, Château Gazin is a hidden gem of a producer and an essential for any Merlot lover.

Focusing on the softer version and more gentle effort from the estate, here is Gazin 2014 on promo, a truly best expression of Pomerol!

Our 'top-recommendation' for the week.

🔥Our Offer🔥
Gazin, Pomerol 2014
Offer: $115 [6bt & above]
or $120 per bot | U.P.: $135

95 points James Suckling
The soy-sauce and savory aromas really make this stand out, but behind it are some very nice fruit and elegant tannins. This is a very well-made modern Pomerol with a lot of potential that needs some time to reveal its full class. Give it five or six years of bottle age. (2/2017)

94 points Wine Advocate
The 2014 Gazin was stubborn and broody when tasted in bottle, but give it a few swirls and there comes forth gravel and black truffle scents alongside sultry black fruit. These aromatics are so engaging and involving, drawing you in towards it charms. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and taut with great precision and sappiness towards the focused, almost symmetrical, black truffle-laced finish. This continues Gazin's fine run of form, a great Pomerol from an estate predisposed these days to create sophisticated, classic wines. (NM) (3/2017)

92 points Vinous
The 2014 Gazin is laced with pretty red cherry, plum, raspberry and rose petal notes. Soft contours and silky tannins add considerable appeal. I would prefer to drink this juicy, midweight Pomerol over the next handful of years, while the fruit retains its youthful exuberance. In 2014, Gazin is all finesse. (AG) (2/2017)

28/06/2024

While Chateau Certan de May may not be as famous as Right Bank Bordeaux stars such as Petrus, Vieux Chateaux Certan or Le Pin, its geographical similarities and proximity have allowed some prestige to rub off on it.
With the help of oenologist Michel Rolland, Chateau Certan de May is typically made as a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from vines that have an average age of 45 years. The sandy-gravel top soil that resembles the Bordeaux Left Bank gives the wine its plush texture and dark fruit juiciness.
This 2015 is simply impressive for the vintage. With its elegant profile, the wine illustrates the unique complementarity of these terroirs.

🔥Our Offer🔥
Chateau Certan de May 2015
Offer: $180 [6bt & above]
or $190 per bot | U.P.: $220

97 points James Suckling
This has a darker sheen of fruits in the blackberry and blood-plum spectrum with sweetly spicy and earthy aromas and some violets to boot. The palate has quite a forthright tannin firmness. A very long, linear wine with a full body and a smooth, fresh, blueberry/plum finish. An impressive wine that rolls endlessly through the finish. This has plenty of ageing potential. Try from 2023. (2/2018)

95 points Wine Advocate
The 2015 Certan de May is composed of 80% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Cabernet Franc, displaying a medium garnet-purple color and nose of warm red cherries, mulberries, crushed red and black plums and raspberry leaves with nuances of wild thyme, dried roses, cloves and eucalypt. Medium to full-bodied and boasting great harmony in the mouth, the palate delivers loads of red and black fruit layers interspersed with floral and herb accents and framed by a firm, ripe, fine-grained backbone, finishing with wonderful length and freshness. (LPB) 95+ (2/2018)

94 points Vinous
The 2015 Certan de May is deep, powerful and imposing. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and mint are some of the many notes that fill out the wine's frame. Vertical in feel, with potent tannins, the 2015 needs time to fully come together. Even so, it does not appear to be an especially refined wine. The blend is 80% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. (AG) (2/2018)

93 points Decanter
Always one of the softer wines in the Moueix range (although owned by Jean-Luc Barreau), this has a pronounced edge of smoke and graphite, feeling precise yet pliant. The velvety tannins are classic Pomerol, suiting the vintage and giving intensity to the fruit, but it's a wine that can be approached a little more early than the others in the range - think five to eight years here. The licorice, tar and spice character with dried fruits and currants impresses me. Full body with firm tannins and a chewy finish. This is even better now than from barrel. Better in 2019

92 John Gilman
Grand-Puy-Lacoste made one of the finer 2010s in Pauillac, but I am not sure I do not prefer their excellent 2011 to the former vintage! This is a complete and very classy wine on both the nose and palate, with none of the difficulties of the vintage in evidence. The very classic bouquet offers up scents of cassis, dark berries, cigar smoke, gravelly soil tones, espresso and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with a lovely core of fruit, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a very long, complex and youthfully stylish finish. A lovely and very classic vintage of Grand-Puy-Lacoste! (Drink between 2022-2060) 92+ points

91 Wine Advocate
The dense ruby/purple-colored 2011 Grand Puy Lacoste exhibits a charming, open-knit bouquet of red and black fruits. It is a savory, medium-bodied, flavorful, well-endowed Pauillac from Xavier Borie

91 Wine Spectator
Shows purity and focus, with a core of bitter plum, cassis and lightly singed vanilla notes leading to a silky, relatively unadorned finish that glides along.

90 Vinous, ID
This strikes me as one of the most successful Left Bank wines in 2011.

We pride ourselves on finding parcels of exceptional Bordeaux red that we can all afford. It is a painstaking and laborious task laced with disappointment - but occasionally we find a 'show-stopper' that makes it all worthwhile. Esprit de Pavie is one of those - an opulent, sumptuous and intense high class claret produced in great years.

Esprit de Pavie is a blend of wine from Château Pavie itself and Château Clos L'Église, Monbousquet in the Côtes de Castillon that's always best-selling worldwide. Gerard P***e, the proprietor of Château Pavie discovered the château and was so impressed with the wine that he bought it as a worthy addition to the Pavie stable, and the perfect wine to blend with his younger vines at Pavie. It is now reaching full maturity with at least another 5-7 years at its peak - a gorgeous wine and clearly undervalued!
You should buy as much as you can afford considering this in Bordeaux's exceptional vintage, 2016!!

Extremely aromatic with kir, cherries and flowers. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins. Juicy fruit. So round and inviting now. Drink and enjoy.

90 Jeb Dunnuck
The entry-level wine of the estate is the 2016 Esprit de Pavie, which is primarily Merlot blended with 30% Cabernet Franc, coming from Saint Emilion and the Castillon region. This total charmer has a sweet bouquet of black cherries, licorice, and spice to go with a mouthfilling, pure, balanced style on the palate that’s already delicious. It certainly has estate character and is ideal for enjoying over the coming decade or so. I’d happily drink bottles.

89 Wine Advocate
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Esprit de Pavie comes bounding out of the glass with youthful, exuberant black cherries, warm blackberries and stewed plums notes with touches of menthol, dark chocolate and candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with juicy black berries and savory layers, framed by rounded tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with a minty kick.

The Goulée vineyard experienced a scenario similar to that of Cos d'Estournel, with smaller temperature differences. The age of the vines and their deep rooting, the scratching operations but also the water reserves and the freshness of the Gironde allowed it to react well to weather conditions.

We super love this 2018! The vintage presents an elegant balance between a beautiful opulence and a great freshness. Energetic, it is a dense wine whose aromas of ripe red fruits combine with a peppery and mineral side.

This wine simply over-delivers at every stage of the tasting experience. It is definitely a candidate to buy by the case and enjoy now or drink over the next years, decade or more. Its incredible affordability at just $600 ea cs of 12bt makes it a pedigreed wine that’s hard to resist. An extraordinary bargain rarely found in Bordeaux, don’t miss it!

"Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel (a blend of 73% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, aged in 20% new oak barriques), rolls effortlessly out of the glass with cheery, open-knit scents of plum preserves, boysenberries and Black Forest cake plus wafts of woodsmoke and pencil lead. Lots of blue fruit, graphite and stone aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with tight and linear tannins and a fresh, vivid finish. Punchy, yet fine, suggesting two to four years of bottle will soften the wine. (reviewed 14th June 2022)

92 points Decanter
Beautiful nose filled with blackcurrant and cherries and a rich milk chocolate note, smells ripe and appealing. Juicy and fully flavoured, a plump mouthfeel with the spicy touches coming through straight away. The liquorice and sweet cedar giving hints of heat and toast on the edges surrounded by blackcurrant and black cherries. Characterful and such a bargain at this price. I love the juiciness with the abundance of fruit - it's so ripe and heady but still succulent and well defined. A fruit bomb with silky exterior. Such a long length too, feels powerful, strong, broad shouldered yet smooth and rippling underneath the muscles. Gorgeous.

92 points Wine Advocate
A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Sangiovese, the Tenuta Luce 2019 Lucente reveals a very pretty dark ruby color over medium concentration. The wine boasts a very lively bouquet with plump cherry fruit, blackberry, sweet spice and toast. Shows expressive, succulent flavors of black currant, blackberry, cassis and lavender that need time to integrate with the firm, dusty tannins, some of which come from the oak. Comes together even better with a few minutes of air. Offers fine length.

92 Wine Enthusiast
The nose blends rich fruit notes of cherry, pomegranate, blood orange and raspberry with a woody, earthy, slightly herbal savoriness. The cherries and blood orange star on the palate, with the savory elements continuing to make themselves known before a closing kick of chili heat. Vibrant acidity bounces around chalky tannins.

The Ornellaia 2021 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia offers bright and youthful fruit with dark cherry, cassis, spice and red rose. This wine is composed of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. You feel the acidity of the Italian grape and the rich fruit from the two French varietals. The wine is tonic and tight with mid-weight intensity. This is the entry-level red from one of Italy's most iconic estates.

Almaviva is the perfect fusion between the brilliant knowledge of the Rothschild family, the knowledge of the soil, vines and Viña Co**ha y Toro region. Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, owner of Mouton Rothschild, and Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle, owner of Viña Co**ha y Toro produced a Bordeaux-style Grand Cru Classe using Co**ha Y Toro’s finest vineyards and drawing upon the expertise and experience of Patrick Leon, winemaker at Mouton Rothschild and Opus One. Two great traditions thus join hands to offer the whole world a promise of pleasure and excellence producing exceptional Bordeaux blend from Chile.

"Fresh and deep nose, full of blueberries, minty cassis, mussels, ci**rs, dark spice and roasted sesame oak, which will need a year or two to fully integrate. A medium-to full-bodied Almaviva with supple, silky tannins and a wealth of black and blue fruit that provides a lot of charm now. Voluptuous and flattering on the palate, hallmarked by its tension and taut texture. Very long. This is the 25th anniversary bottling. 68% cabernet sauvignon, 24% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot."

2020 was exceptionally dry, with 75% less rain than usual in the period between May and September, which resulted in an earlier harvest to produce a 2020 Almaviva with 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carmenère (from Peumo), 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, so with no Merlot this time. The process was as careful as possible, without using any bombs, doing manual and optical sorting of the grapes, pressing in small vertical presses and aging of 20 months in French oak barrels, 73% of them new and the rest second use. The wine reached good ripeness with 14.9% alcohol. It still shows the effect of the élevage a bit, with abundant notes of sweet spices, a creamy touch and some smoke. I tasted it next to the 2019, and the wines have a very similar aromatic palette with a clear note of baked peppers. What was amazing in 2020 was that they harvested the Carmenere almost five weeks earlier than they normally would, and the result is not a green wine at all. As in all dry years, the wines show a little more tannic, a little in the style of the 2017—but the 2020 has more tension than the 2017, and the 2017 was more powerful and with a bigger tannic structure. The 2019 had more volume than the 2018, and the 2020 is closer to the 2019 than the 2018. (LG) (8/2022)
